Did Mal hear that bounty hunter come in or did he stumble across him? I would think somebody would hear him come in, or at least have a warning system when outer hatches open, aside from on the bridge. I don't see much sense in having outer locks on stateroom doors, espicially the captain's. I knew River was in his ship when she started talking over the PA, but could one ship us another's system like that? Also, is it wise to have such a big forward window? I suppose it wouldn't matter much if it's strictly for space but it still seems unwise.
I got the impression Mal stumbled across him. He seemed surprised and took forever to react.
Maybe this firefly was used to transport prisoners at one time. I don't think Mal's cabin was any different from the others, not "the captain's room" per se.
This was Simon's best episode. In addition to getting most of the one-liners, his efforts to take down Early were heroic.
