Firefly as sexist & misogynistic

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Firefly: Firefly Kitchen Sink: Firefly as sexist & misogynistic

Here's a blog that says so. It's written by a lesbian "feminist" blogger who I also consider to be a racist and sexist.

I can't believe her problems with the Wash/Zoe relationship. She has a problem with Wash telling her that he likes to watch her bathe, even one of the comments even calls it Wash 'objectifying' Zoe. So in her mind it's wrong for a married couple to enjoy the physical aspect of each other. One of the things I loved about their relationship is that they were in a long term committed relationship and still had hot sex. It seems that much of our culture seems to say that marriage is all about love, companionship and stability. Don't get me wrong, a good marriage should have all of those things but it should also have hot sex, if you are going to spend the rest of your life with this person you better enjoy the sex. It's the love/companionship/stability-only idea that has lead to things like married men who keep young mistresses on the side for sex and unfulfilled wives finding pleasure in the arms of the young dashing pool boy (pretty much the plot of every cheesy romance novel.)

Also she has problems with the interracial aspect of their relationship. She flatly makes the racist assertion that any relationship with a white male will be abusive. If someone were to say that black males always treat their girlfriends/wives like cr@p because of a few real life examples of men who did that person would be rightly called out as a racist, same thing with her.

She has problems with Mal treating the women around him poorly as she feels its sexist, but also has a problem with him treating the men around him the same way. She doesn't get that Mal is supposed to be kind of an emotionally closed off jerk because of everything that he went through in the war. That aspect of his personality was somewhat toned down in the rest of the series because the Fox execs felt that captain should be more "jolly."

All in all I find it hard to believe that someone can find sexism, racism and mysogany all over a show that features:

An interracial couple with a strong, tough black woman married to a rather childlike and naive white man.

A female mechanic who is more tech savvy than anyone else on the crew.

A male jock type who's constantly the butt of jokes about how dumb he is.

We should introduce Dani Alecto to Rona.

Oh dear.

The first scene opens in a war with Mal and Zoe. Zoe runs around calling Mal ‘sir’ and taking orders off him. I roll my eyes. Not a good start.

Yes, I rolled my eyes too, but at her statement! I imagine the concept of military protocol is beyond this author.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Joss uses his own wife in this way. Expects her to clean up his emotional messes ...

I hope Joss sues her for that!

I skim-read the rest. Appalling dross.

You get the feeling that the author of that blog doesn't really "get" what's going on in the series.

Luigi, that's exactly what I thought.

Oh I also love how to so freely uses the word "rape" when discussing Inara. To say that someone who chose to become a high class prostitute is the same as the violent traumatizing violation that all to many people experience is an insult to real rape victims out there.

Ever see a train wreck and not be able to look away. Well that's how I feel about this woman's blog.

I went back to that blog and found that she also reviewed "Our Miss Reynolds" and totally misses the mark. She criticizes the depiction of Saffron as a meek person who only wishes to serve, but doesn't like Zoe not liking her because of it. Than when Saffron shows her true colors says that it shows the moral of the show is "strong women must be stopped." Yea they are going after her because she's a strong women, not because she's trying to steal from them and kill them. She also refers to that scene in the Pilot with Patience as Mal mistreating the last strong women who stood up to him. Once again Patience tried to kill him and steal from him. She also mentions Jayne's Vera scene (the big gun he offers to trade with Mal) and calls it macho phallic porn (Jayne's story and how much he loves his gun) but neglects to mention that Mal makes fun of him for it "Jayne my days of not taking you seriously are defiantly coming to a middle."

Basically she seems to miss the idea that I like about Firefly is that men and women are treated equally. Either gender can be brave, cowardly, smart, stupid, deceptive, trustworthy, strong, weak, evil or good. Or perhaps she does know that and THAT is what she objects to. Elsewhere on her blog she mentions some tragic cases where men killed/abused children and uses it as an example of how "all men are dangerous and should never be allowed around children," no joke.
