Ooh.

Wait a minute. CJ & Hoynes? Que?

By Harvey Kitzman on Wednesday, March 03, 2004 - 3:21 pm:

Yeah, I didn't believe that one either. Definitely out of character for CJ.

HK and HH: Well, remember, this apparently happened roughly 6 years prior to when the Pilot takes place, so...

Is it just me, or does everyone else miss Sorkin? He would never have put in these "Oh, by the way" plot points.

Silly me: when CJ is discussing the exact wording of the conversation Barlet & Leo had with Hoynes, there is some doubt as to what exactly was said. Fair enough--it was, what, about a year earlier? But me, I had to think it: for a split second, when they were arguing, I thought, "Check the DVD! It's all there--" Then I realized how stupid that thought was.

Also, this is, by my count, the second time that The Twerp has picked up a phone and called a congressman (who appears to be irreversibly against something) to convince him to vote in favor of something. The first time, he called Rep. Thiele to get him to change his mind about voting "nay" for Russel's confirmation. This time, he calls Rep. Finn, apparently to get him to support closing a naval base in his district. As I recall, the show never tells us HOW he persuaded these two. Was it just the Pierce name (after all, we keep hearing about his family having political voltage), or were TPTB working on a plot line that got cancelled because no one liked the kid?

Harvey, I agree that the plots haven't been as universally riveting ("Constituency of One," "Disaster," even "Shutdown," which had great promise but somehow missed making a huge impact). However, I think that a dip in story quality is MORE than compensated by the huge improvement in dialogue. Thank GOD that I don't have to listen to endless "I [insert sentence]." "Sorry?" "I said [repeats sentence]." For the life of me I can't fathom why Sorkin thought that routine was necessary six, seven times per episode. Once in while, sure, when someone is legitimately distracted. But otherwise it just annoyed me. I'm also glad to see that the "random factoid/story bit/news item" that pops up in the first conversation of the episode isn't mindlessly repeated to others throughout the show, another Sorkin hallmark.

Synopsis for this episode: CJ is ambushed on live TV when it is announced that former VP Hoynes is writing a book, sending the White House into a spin. Meanwhile Josh is dealing with army base closures and Toby has to deal with Chinese bras....
