HARPER 2.0

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Andromeda: Season One: HARPER 2.0

By Triggins (Triggins) on Monday, January 15, 2001 - 5:38 pm:

A dying Perseid transfers data into Harper's brain and overloading Harper with information.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, January 16, 2001 - 4:12 am:

Sounds similar to The Schizoid Man from NextGen.

By KAM on Wednesday, January 17, 2001 - 3:42 am:

With a bit of The Nth Degree thrown in.

I seem to be the only person in this world who is watching this show and not automatically comparing it to Trek (and yes, I am a Trek fan.) [grin] Yes, there are some similarities but given that it came from the same brain as Trek, that's hardly suprising. Exploding consoles aside, I haven't seem anything which *instantly* makes me see a connection to Trek.

I gotta say, I liked how unnerved Trance looked when Harper spoke to her in what I assume is her native language. I'm really getting fond of this girl and her mysteries (although some of the subtle hints have passed me by until I go back and watch with hindsight).

Also good: that we didn't find out specifically what Harper said to Rev, or to Trance. We can guess and we can infer, but... no facts. Leaves room for later interpretation.

See, this isn't really a nit post. I just wanted to add something positive because people seem to be quite disapproving of this show, while it's fast becoming one of my favourites :)

Says Andromeda staff writer Zack Stentz: "That's probably the real reason Rev attacked him. He was outraged by Harper's improper syllable stresses and his incorrect congugation of the Magog verb for 'to have sexual congress with a dead raccoon.' When everyone knows Magog prefer their raccoons live...."

I am not making this up.

I like Andromeda a lot, but I'm not much of a bona fide nitpicker (though the two aren't mutually exclusive -- nitpicking doesn't necessarily equal disapproving). I think Trek comparisons are a natural thing with any SF, because it's become something of a standard -- though I usually don't bother with comparisons. :-)

By KAM on Saturday, February 10, 2001 - 10:26 pm:

Dusk, I think you've made a classic mistake of confusing nitpicking a show with hating a show.

If I hated Andromeda, I wouldn't watch it.

As for the comparisons, well, supposedly there are only 8 plots in the writing world, therefore it is only natural to be reminded of other stories, especially when the story is reduced to a 1 or 2 line summary.

By Triggins (Triggins) on Saturday, February 17, 2001 - 5:36 am:

The episode was pretty good. Harper gets overloaded with information from a Persiede who is being chased by an alien bounty hunter with phase shifting abilities. Harper goes slightly off kilter with all the information and images of a Magog massacre. The crew finds out that a mysterious alien directed the massacre who does not want that information revealed.

--Well we know how far in the future the show takes place. About three millenia after the Germans built the X-1 rocket.

-- My theory is that the mysterious alien is from the same race as Trance.

-- I wonder who he fears seeing that information.

By KAM on Monday, February 19, 2001 - 3:16 am:

1 more comparison for Dusk. ;-)
Harper building the X-1 was reminiscent of Sisko building the clock in Dramatis Personae.

That beach ball seemed like a very poor design for an escape pod.

2 47's. 1947 - date of the X-1. 4947 - add 3000 to 1947. ;-)

Oddly enough, most of the scenes of atrocity seemed to be Human. (Redjac, Redjac, REDJAC!!!)

That triangular pillow did not look all that comfortable.

Amazing that no one had ever discovered the figure in the recording before. Also why keep this secret? In an earlier ep we saw broadcast footage of a surfing competition, so wouldn't there also be some interstellar newscasters? Transmit the images (then everyone becomes a target.;-)

A minor thing, the Perseid had an All Systems University insignia on his finger. Does this mean that he was a very old librarian, that the ASU, or parts of it, survived the Fall, or that some other group adopted the crest of the special information gathering division?

By Spockania on Monday, February 19, 2001 - 3:35 pm:

How did the beachball pod get into the escape hatch? It didn't look like it had attachments to manipulate the outside of the hatch, and if it did the Perseid didn't look like he was in the shape to use it.

By Butch B on Monday, February 19, 2001 - 8:40 pm:

Triggins, a correction, the X-1 was not built by the Germans. I think you are thinking of the V-1 rocket.
The X-1 was built by Bell Lab. and was the first aircraft to break the speed of sound. I wonder if they are going to show Harper completing it on the show?
Like Tusk, I too was pleased that they didn't explain what Harper said to Trance and Bem. They also teased us with the little sun tattoo on Trance's back. I'm glad they seem to be letting things develop slowly.

By Triggins (Triggins) on Tuesday, February 20, 2001 - 4:31 pm:

Oops your right. I got my rockets mixed up thanks for correcting me.

By ian livingstone on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 - 10:02 pm:

The beach ball escape pod is a design considered by NASA for use on the shuttle or space station for temporary use until a nearby shuttle could come by and pick the astronaut inside up. I don't know what the current status of the idea is right now but considering the way things are at NASA right now I don't have much hope about it.

By Spockania on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 - 10:12 pm:

It may be worth noting, Harper came THAT close to inventing the Universal Translator before he got sidetracked. Now, that is a project I wonder if he will complete...?

By KAM on Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:45 am:

Had an odd thought about the possible identity of the mystery humanoid and the rumored Earth: Final Conflict/Andromeda crossover. Could the alien be a mutated Taelon???

By Mirror Tyr on Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 5:09 am:

Now that would be interesting KAM.
