The crew of the Eureka Maru jions Andromeda. Mercenary Tyr Anansanzi becomes the first officer of Andromeda.
Tyr Anansanzi leads his mercenary crew to take the ship from Hunt. Trance Gemini decides that she wants no part of Gerentex's trying to take the ship from Hunt and is shot by Gerentex and believed killed. Hunt manages to defeat three of the mercenaries and Andromeda invades the Eureka Maru's computer system causing Genetex to order Harper to abandon Andromeda leaving Beka, Rev, Tyr, and the mercenaries on board. Genetex then tries to push the Andromeda into the black hole deciding if he can not have it than no one can.
Hunt and the crew of the Eureka Maru decide to band together to get themselves free of the black hole. They detonate nova bombs inside the black hole causing it to transform into a white hole and be pushed away and then jump to Slipstream.
Tyr and the crew of Eureka Maru decide to help Hunt rebuild the Commonwealth.
Overall a good episode.
What we know about the characters.
Trance's race is unknown and her body repairs itself even after she's been killed.
Tyr is trying to prove his worth and hope to jion a new clan.
Rev is a (normally) non-violent Taoist. (Think Caine [David Carridine] in Kung Fu.) He also has a chemical defense system. (Think skunk.)
I could actually HEAR Rimmer say, "A WHITE Hole?" I was fervently wishing that it wouldn't spew time. Thank goodness it didnt... :-)
Another thing we know.... Captain Dylan Hunt likes basketball.
okay, in the 1st episode, the Eureka Maru jettisons the cargo pod.
When the EM lands in the Andromeda hanger bay, the pod is attached (thus allowing the mercenaries to came out.)
When the EM bails out of the Andromeda later in the 2nd episode, no cargo pod.
But when we see the EM in space again, cargo pod regained.
Hmm...don't really know what to say about this ep. The concept for the series is great, but the actual series could have been polished a bit before it aired. Still, a nice ep. with lots of amazing visual effects and some nice moments.
Some of the fight sequences were badly choreographed. The fight between Hunt and the cyborg had the cyborg doing a cartwheel for no reason, and when Hunt surprises the mercenaries near the computer core, he attacks one and the other just stands there until he's done with the first.
Hmm...Trance's death reminded me of how Worf's death was in NextGen. He dies, we feel bad, then he's back to life somehow.
Really nice visuals though. The white hole forming, Andromeda in the computer core, and the nova bomb launch all looked great.
The missiles around the corner looked like the heat-seeking bazookoids of Red Dwarf. (Polymorph.)
I thought the idea of 'Harper walking' inside the computer was unoriginal, although I liked the scene of big ol' Andromeda picking him up and 'blowing' him away.
Hunt knocks out a mercenary, then drops his staff instead of shrinking it down.
How did the Eureka Maru turn like it did after pushing the Andromeda?
If 1 Nova bomb can destroy 1 star, then why did they need to fire 40? Was the mass of the black hole equal to 40 stars?
Considering the size of the ship, 5 crewmen seems a little small.
Triggins: Beka was the acting first officer, not Tyr.
Judging from Tyr's reaction, I think Nova bombs were used to destroy many Nietzians (maybe even his family) during the war or after. So, can any crew member rocket up the ladder like the Cyborg, or was it just her enchanced abilities?
I liked this second half of a the pilot a LOT better than the first.
Now, if they can just avoid Voyager's first mistake--that is, they had the chance to have a show that could have shown the tension between the Maquis and Starfleet but instead decided right away that everyone was going to act like Starfleet.
Hopefully the tensions inherent in this crew won't be whitewashed in the same way.
Kevin Sorbo's a surprisingly good actor. Now, if they could just get rid of those Battlestar Gallactica looking uniforms, we'd have something.
And to follow up on my comment on the last episode about the cheesy looking aliens--Gerentex--well, at least we know what Mets fans evolve into (forgive me, I'm bitter)
Grrrr.... Let me guess, you live in Atlanta? Im a bit torn over that, Palandine. Im a New Yorker who became a Georgian.
By the way, did anyone else notice the other Darksider... was it just my imagination, or was he wearing BIKER GEAR?!?!
Merat, you're right, he did look like he just came out of a leather bar
...not that there's anything WRONG with that...
I'm a St. Louisan. The Mets are pond scum.
:Palandine looks around for her Mike Piazza voodoo doll:
Oh yeah, one other thing I liked--
Seatbelts. Shoulder harnesses. You shoot better when you're strapped into the fightin' chair.
Why, oh why, did they NOT have these on the Trek series?
Ahh... St. Louis. I lived there too. Shame we didn't get to see Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum in action though.... (Those two big robots through which Hunt saw Rev). Also.. Laura Bertram, who playes Trance Gemini, has won two Gemini Awards and has been nominated for 3 more. I wonder if they gave the character her last name AFTER Laura was hired?
Kam: True in the episode she was. I got that information from a source other than the episode and unfortunately it was not correct.
Since Trance Gemini is cat-like and apperently immortal, let's take bets on when the cat-with-nine-life's line is used.
Probably when John DeLancie (Q) guest stars later on this year.
To answer a question from the first episode: Yes, the Andromeda hologram is a full-bodied one. You can see her during the meeting at the end.
According to Seamus Harper's dataport logs, "Under the Night" and "An Affirming Flame" take place on 4.7.10087.
