Season One Discussion

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Andromeda: Commonwealth's Sink: Season One Discussion

Andromeda has successfully completed its first season without being put on hiatus or fans having to fear its cancellation. Now its time to rate the season. I personally Andromeda had a great first season even though it did have a few poor shows but the Season finale made up for them.
I want to look at how the show did overall in plot, character developement, episode development, and overall continuity.

Plot- I would give the overall plot a ten. Not once did it seem that the creators forgot what mission Andromeda was on. (like a certain other show we would not mention). At the same time the rebuilding the commonwealth was not crammed down our throats.

Character Developement- The writers of Andromeda have handled character development pretty well. We know more about the characters in the first season of Andromeda than we knew about the charaters in the first of Voyager. Not to say that there isn't more to find out about them. And the character development can still take some twists and turns. I would give them a ten as well.

Epsiode developement- I give episode developement a nine. There were few episodes in there in which the plot were just horrid. StarCrossed I felt was a bit predictable.

Overall Continuity- 9.5. There have been some problems here and there when it comes to continuity but overall the writers have done well.

I only started watching the show because of the "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda" tag. At first I wasn't too impressed, but I thought Harper was cute enough and Dylan interesting enough to keep watching. I must say it's matured gracefully and I'm well and truly hooked. The entire enterprise is moving logically and emotionally forward and judging from Kevin Sorbo's remarks at the Oklahoma City sci-fi convention, season two should be kicka$$.

I hope it only gets better from here. Indeed, while not Babylon 5 of Farscape, Andromeda would have been the best Trek sequal. The poor episodes, in my eyes, were forgivable as the first season is testing the waters. I await to see how well the writers planned out the universe, as the Commonwealth homeworld, Dragon remains, and remaining Commonwealth leaft overs are still up in the air. I would still classify the series as a Guilty Pleasure for myself, as it's still pretty unknown amoung my circles and I get funny looks when I try to talk about it to others.
