How does Dylan Hunt rank against other Sci-Fi Captains

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Andromeda: Commonwealth's Sink: How does Dylan Hunt rank against other Sci-Fi Captains
By Triggins (Triggins) on Wednesday, May 09, 2001 - 10:23 am:

How would Dylan Hunt compare to Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, and even Captain Sheridian and Captain Gideon from Crusade. Do you think he is weaker in some areas than they are.

By Palandine on Monday, May 14, 2001 - 3:41 pm:

Dylan Hunt has, by far, the WORST hair of any of the captains listed above. Hercules the legendary captain is a fine-looking man, but needs a haircut.

He's right up there on the self-righeousness meter, though (listing only the Trek guys, since I didn't catch all of Crusade or B5):

1. Picard
2. Hunt
3. Janeway
4. Sisko
5. Kirk

As for "most likely to get one's ship boarded by marginally competent aliens," Hunt leads the pack. :) I'm just waiting for Tyr to gut him and take over Andromeda.

Lets see how many times has Hunt had his ship invaded. The warrior children invaded, the Nieztcheans have invaded as well, the one bounty hunter invaded, the Consensus invaded the ship, and it looks like the ship will be invaded in the season finale. Not even Janeway has this kind of track record.

Dylan's more like Kirk-Sisko-Janeway-Sheridan
and not a..ahem..WIMP..like Picard.

In other words Dylan's a figther and not a
talker.Even when his first officer betrays him
and is about to kill him he still praises Dylan
for his willingness to fight back.

Actually the commader we ought to really
compare him with is Roj Blake as Andromeda and
Blakes7 as a lot of common ground.E.G.A motely
crew thrown together for a common purpose:a
cynical crewmember who looks out for his own
interest(Tyr/Avon),a female pilot(Becca/Jenna),
etc.

Picard knocked a Kligon out cold in Sins of the Father, knocked down Finn when Finn appeared on his bridge in The High Ground, singlehandedly took out several thieves on his deserted ship in Starship Mine, withstood Gul Madred's torture in Chain of Command part II, took on THREE Nausicaans twice his size when he was in his twenties, was the Academy track champ, and has fought in numerous battles and wars and had numerous adventures in which he was more than willing to give his life to save others. He also had biceps that were way more cut than mine in ST First Contact (not a difficult feat, though), and he's more than twice my age. All this, and you think he's a WIMP? Yeah, right.

By ScottN on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 10:13 pm:

Picard ... was the Academy track champ

And Kirk was "a stack of books with legs".

Who's the nerd and who's the jock?

Don't forget his greatest achievement: staying sane after assimilation. (Hey, at the time he did it, the Borg were still really scary.) Not to mention that he foiled the Borg's plans BEFORE he was de-assimilated. That take some strength of character, which is more important than strength of body any day.

I would say he is almost equal to Kirk in his ego! They both think they are the gift to the world and like to fight oldfashioned fistfights and so on instead of using brains or modern technology. So far he is less interested in women than Kirk, I think. (although Kirk set a record chasing after every skirt that's hard to top!)

He does hold speeches as if he wants to use his brain, but his actions are very common and seem to contradict this. It's as if the creators wanted to have moral plus the usual action stuff, but didn't know how to do it.

(I must admitt that I only watched the first few episodes, as I can't stand the guy and don't like the stories. STC did not have logical stories all the time, too, but they had a great team to balance it out, and andromeda hasn't in my opionion).

I also think that Picard is certainly no Wimp! He shows how to find creative solutions using his brains and his feelings, and considering implications before acting. This is how it should be in the future: problems are very complex, so you don't shoot first and ask questions later or start a fistfight to solve something. In my opinion, Kirks behaviour is often much mure •••••• (but macho, of course, which means almost the same *g*).Kirk has only an amazing amount of luck that everything works out in the end (and seems to own favours from all admirals, because he is never really investigated for his breach of protocol)

Kirks time was a much wilder, open, frontier like time for the Federation. By Picard's time the Fleet could afford to calm down and get all politically correct. Kirk got his job done and did it very well thank you. Not only did he use his fists but he also used his brains quite often. And he knew when to trust his officers and when to go off on his own. Dylan seems to be a good balance of brains and brawn (at least so far).
