"LAVA AND ROCKETS"

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Andromeda: Season Two: "LAVA AND ROCKETS"

By Lee Jamilkowski (Ljamilkowski) on Tuesday, December 18, 2001 - 12:29 am:

According to the official website:

We then take a break (phew!) and go on a raucous adventure with Dylan as he hijacks a ship. That's right, Dylan hijacks a ship. It's a tale we call "Lava and Rockets". But all we'll say is that things get steamy.

The title is clearly a nod to the Los Bros. Hernandez comic book Love And Rockets. (The band Love And Rockets also got their name from the comic.)

This was a pretty decent episode.

I watch Andromeda whenever I remember to so I've missed a number of episodes. But this one was pretty good. I sort of enjoyed the Andromeda and Maru scenes more than the Dylan scenes.

SOME COMMENTS:
1. When did Rommiedroid become such a hardass dominatrix? She used to be pretty nice. Now she's some uncaring commando.

2. I love Tyr. He's the best character on this show now that Rev Bem is gone. It's about time someone stated the blindingly obvious to the full-of-herself Rommie.

3. I can't blame Harper. Future Trance looks pretty frightening to me as well.

4. Why wouldn't Dylan offer to let Molly (was that the girl's name?) stay on the Andromeda? Clearly they have feelings for each other. Why not have her stay on board.

5. Did they ever say why these aliens were hunting Dylan?

See ya later

I have to say I didn't think much of this episode.

The onboard Andromeda parts were pretty good, and so were the Tyr/Rommie exchanges (Rommie is only like that when she thinks someone may have killed her captain; given The Prince, Tyr's loyalties are, in fact, questionable).

However--the Dylan part? Oh Yuck.

Mind you, I like Dylan, ordinarily. I like a captain who can think as well as fight and I think that the blend of arrogance and insanity he sometimes displays is about what he'd need to try to restart the Commonwealth after 300 years.

However--this episode doesn't seem to have worked so much to illuminate his character as to have him get-the-girl.

And the girl in question had next to no personality.

The only time I thought she might work out as a character was when she announced that she had only been as cooperative as she had because she was waiting for the chance to get away & get back at him. Then, of course, the cops turned out to be corrupt, Molly develops a huge case of hero worship, takes an unlikely few minutes at the bottom of a volcano to rhapsodize about flying, falls into D's arms & we get the "CPR," those long, lingering kisses while the ship falls and that lovely last scene.

At least Elsibet had (has) character.

Also, while it was moderately well done, I have to wonder how much of the constant explanation is going to show up in the future episodes.

Oh boy where are they going with this show. Rommie doing matrix moves as well as the spinning drill kick from street fighter. Her new look is rather "different" shall we say.Tyr is still cool at least. I don't really blame harper either in regards to Trance. She is now rather less pixish and has a definate dark side aura about her. I think i might be a bit leary around her too. I'm not sure whats going on but as long as it doesn't degenerate to the levels of EFC then it should be an interesting ride.

Re: TUE #6 No, they didn't say why Dylan was being hunted. I guess they're going to explain in a future episode(s). I thought that one of the reasons they were changing writers was to get rid of multi-episode story arcs.

"[The]Dylan part? Oh yuck."

Oh _hell_ yeah. I especially didn't like the part where he gives that gal a first class ticket to the new and _improved_ High Guard Academy after getting it on with her. If _you_ were thinking: "What's wrong with this picture?" like _I_ was, gimme a Hell Yeah!
I read the David Sluss review at CynicsCorner.org, and I'm thinking maybe the Commonwealth _is_ too arrogant and corrupt to be resurrected.
And tonight at 10:30 on WGN - Chicago's WB (Unfortunately): MORE cyborgs?
