"THE FAIR UNKNOWN"

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Andromeda: Season Two: "THE FAIR UNKNOWN"

By Triggins (Triggins) on Tuesday, April 02, 2002 - 7:32 pm:

Andromeda finds a race that existed during the Commonwealth.

I believe the actual title is THE FAR UNKNOWN.
This is the first time we see a member of the
species that ruled the Commonwealth.
Dylan's respect seems to stem both from the fact
he is an High Guard officer/Argosy operative and
that he grew up on her homeworld.

Well, finally an episode of Andromeda that didn't stink like an old diaper.

In fact, it was quite good.

Ever since that time shifting episode, this whole show has been slowly flushing down the crapper.

However, this episode has redeemed my faith in the show a little bit.

The episodes are stronger when they deal with the restoration of the Commonwealth and I like the idea of aliens that are just plain superior, but nice and good.

It's really neat to see how everyone but Dylan refers to the Vedrans as if they're some kind of mythical creature like a leprechaun or something, while Dylan was raised on a planet with them.

Tyr's cautions about becoming pawns of the Vedrans seemed well placed and it made me think. That's always good.

Of course we had the "pointless Andromeda shootout" (TM) with the "random, faceless alien of the week" (TM).

I am constantly confused by the power of the Andromeda. Previous episodes refer to the ship as some sort of superweapon that can practically destroy an armada of ships on its own, but in this episode they have to hide from a race of aliens that don't seem to have a great many ships.

Good makeup on the Vedran. Better than most makeup on the show.

When Raparthia (I think that was the name) goes FOOM at the end, it looks like a slipstream opening. Methinks the planet was not destroyed.

Great idea: The notion that the Vedrans are up to something and they aren't informing the self-appointed savior of the universe Dylan of their plans. That had to be a shot to his ego.

Great moment: The Vedran gives Dylan a direct order. (And poor Dylan thought he'd become his own boss by now :) )

Not without flaws, but this episode gives me hope for this show's future.

See ya later

Trig, I believe all of the races encountered so far (Humans, Perseids, Neitziens, etc.) existed during the Commonwealth.

Scott it is Fair, not Far.

TUE, I thought the planet was called Ral Partha. Which sounds like something from Dungeons & Dragons.

An explosion in a cave system. Can you say cave-in? However we later see Caldarans coming through. Either that was a very weak explosive or a very sturdy cave.

However, blowing up holes in the roof of a cave system should have buried everyone within, but apparently the tons of rock & dirt were simply vaporized.

When Dylan asks who made the star, Tyr points to Beka. However it was the Caldarans, not Beka.

I laughed when the Admiral ordered the deck cleared. The whole deck? Why not the decks above and below as well? However after Dylan leaves Sickbay we see the others standing around. Hey, the admiral said clear the DECK, not the ROOM.

So why didn't anyone wonder about the Warders who might still be on the planet?

If Ral Partha wasn't destroyed, then why didn't the Vedrans do this 300 years earlier?

Okay, maybe terms like Admiral & Captain are translated for the viewers convenience. Maybe even Argosy is just a Vedran word that just sounds like an Earth word. But why does the salute look so Human?

Ral Partha manufactured miniature figures for D&D games. I don't know if they're still in business or not.
