Robert Hewitt leaving Andromeda

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Andromeda: Commonwealth's Sink: Robert Hewitt leaving Andromeda
By Triggins (Triggins) on Friday, November 23, 2001 - 4:06 pm:

Robert Hewitt is leaving Andromeda according to Slipstream BBS. Evidently the story lines that Hewitt was coming up with were too complicated. And now they have a new team of writers who will give us stand alone episodes.

By Jessica on Friday, November 23, 2001 - 7:02 pm:

Uh oh.

Changing writers is not good.

And I think the stories are already stand alone. That is, they do follow from one another, but I think someone could watch a single episode without having seen the prior shows & still know what is going on.

I just hope that we won't be stuck with writers who have amnesia and write shows which contradict one another.

(BTW, where do you get this info?)

Oh god not another Brannon Braga productions slop!

By Triggins (Triggins) on Saturday, November 24, 2001 - 8:45 pm:

Jessica- The Slipstream BBS has the story about Hewitt's firing. Sorbo said that they want the show to be less complicated and less continuity. Hopefully that does not mean the writers will be forgetting established premises.

bobo- Lets hope not.

Tribune, Fireworks and Kevin Sorbo are obviously a few french fries shy of a Happy Meal.

Robert Hewitt Wolfe isn't merely a writer. He's the show's co-creator and driving force. I've enjoyed his work ever since ST DS9.

Robert, you will be missed, my friend. I'll be looking out for your future endeavours.

I actually found out about this from David E. Sluss' notice about it on his website, the Cynics Corner, at www.cynicscorner.org. Never one to express himself with kid gloves, he wrote a scathing (and HILARIOUS) satire of the meeting that he imagined took place between Robert Hewitt Wolfe, Kevin Sorbo, and TPTB. Having read his satire\bFIRST}, and THEN going to the link he provided to BBS and reading the actual news story and quotes from the people involved there made it even funnier. His satirical account of the debacle:

The story at TrekNation is at
http://www.slipstreamnews.com/news/231101_01.shtml

and Robert Wolfe's farewell notice, as well as his answers to questions about his departure, are at http://www.slipstreambbs.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/002304.html

I'd also like to take this time to thank the moderator here, Triggins. After I was banned from the Enterprise boards, Triggins sent me an email saying I was free to post on the Andromeda boards whenever I wanted to. This was one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me at NitC, and I'd like to reiterate: Thank you.

I usually don't pay much attention to the names of The Powers That Be, so--tell me one thing--are these the same folks who are in charge of Earth: Final Conflict?

By Triggins (Triggins) on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 5:07 pm:

I believe they are. So there are probably the same genuises who thought it was a good idea to get rid of Kevin Kilner.

By Jessica on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 9:58 pm:

Oh

No

I made the mistake of watching part of an episode this week because Kilner was back.

It was awful beyond words.

And now they want to "improve" my favorite show?

(I liked E:FC first season. Never as much as I liked Andromeda, but I used to tape it)

Rant follows.

By Jessica on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 10:12 pm:

Ok. I finally went and read all the relevant articles, and now I have to rant. None of my friends watch the show--I've been working on converting one, but I think I'll stop--so I don't have anyone to rant to/with, so you get the benefit!!

That said:

What on earth are they thinking?!? They fired Hewitt for "producing story arcs that were too difficult for the rest of us to follow" Who is this mysterious "us"? And why can't they follow the show?

They want something a casual viewer could tune in and see? As far as I can tell, that's what Andromeda is _now_. One of the things I've been admiring is how _well_ each show is made--it is a complete story in itself and it refers to previous shows. Too, there is always a short explanation of whatever is essential from the previous shows--worked into the dialogue and character interaction so that it fits--not the standard "cabbage head" job. I've been admiring the writing for some time now.

And--kill the arcs? That's one thing I've enjoyed about the show--this week's action will have consequences somewhere down the line. I mean, I waited months for the crew to discover what Tyr had brought on board the Andromeda, and I wasn't disappointed. Trance is an ongoing mystery; Gerentex popping up again was good--and plausible.

And they want "a more action oriented" show? What do they think they have _now_? There is at least one fire-fight and one fist-fight in every single episode. Usually there is also a big explosion so that our heroes can come leaping out just ahead of the flames. How much more action can one show _take_?

I will probably go on watching (unless and until it becomes E: FC), because I am hooked, but I am tempted not to--I'd like to quit with good memories.

OH how the good die young and then just fade into another baywatchish B&B stardrivel. Maybe they want to compete with Enterprise on its own low level.

By Triggins (Triggins) on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 6:36 am:

Luigi- I agree with your comments about Tribune and Fireworks. In letting a great talent like Hewitt go they show their lack of concern for their fans. Sorbo's inflated ego will be a detriment to the show as well as it seems he is bidding for more screen time and the series will now become Sorbo centered and not centered on each member of the show.

Jessica- I agree with your rant as well. The arcs have been the best part of Andromeda. I have enjoyed the lack of reset to zero button. To answer your question about what they were thinking this is my guess.
Tribune execs "Hey we have a great show here with a strong following, good writing and character developement. Lets see how we can destroy it."

Anon- Hopefully the show won't die without a fight.

By Triggins (Triggins) on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 4:18 pm:

Now not only has Hewitt left Andromeda but the concept of rebuilding the Commonwealth is the next to go. At the end of the season Dylan will decide that rebuilding the Commonwealth is not as important as helping people. I guess the coming Magog threat will be forgotten.

I realize that this isn't the board for this, but.... Luigi, why the smeg were you banned from Enterprise!?

By Mike on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 7:42 pm:

Never mind, I just read the Enterprise top board (like I should have done in the first place). Please delete these inane posts of mine.
