City of

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Angel: Season One: City of
Angel is in the big city, saving the day..er, the night. Enter the half-demon Doyle, who tells Angel the "higher powers" have particular mission for Angel. And while Angel is saving the day (with the help of Doyle's visions), he runs into Cordelia as well as a young lady in some big trouble.

Ruminations
Ah, premieres and their goofiness. Let's just say I'm glad the "instastakes" haven't shown up again, all right?

Here are the nits you posted over on the Buffy board:

The episode is titled City Of.

I didn't care for the theme music, but I guess it's suppose to reflect the more
introspective nature of the star.

Not a big fan of those annoying jumps from one scene to another. I keep thinking
Doyle's having another vision.

It was also annoying to have Doyle recap Angel's history, but I guess that's for the
non-Buffy fans who, for some reason, decided to watch a Buffy spin-off.

I loved the first (re)meeting of Angel & Cordelia.
"Are you still...?" (makes vampire face)
"It's good to see she's grown as a person."

Also the scene where Cordelia realizes the rich guy is a vampire.

After being kicked out of the window, the rich guy took quite a while to burst into flames.

In some ways this episode (& parts of later ones) feel like a superhero comic.

I'm immortal, drive a black convertible, wear dusters and live in an open plan apartment
with an elevator. What's my name? It's Angel but it could just as easily be Duncan
McLeod.
I really liked this ep, especially for a pilot. I did like the intro music although I agree
about the scene switching being annoying.
Loved Cordelia's 'Wait you don't know who he is, he's going to kick your ass'

I think I'm going to enjoy this series.

Uh, I know this might sound naive, (I only watched about 6 episodes of Buffy) But where does Angle get this apartment, Weapons, car, ect. I mean they are complaining about having no money.

The cross over phone call with Buffy is slightly different!

Speaking of having no money, we later see that they have a computer. I'm no computer expert but it looks like it's a pretty fast one too. If they're so poor how come they have such a good computer?

Angel just premiered on terrestrial TV in the UK and they butchered it. It got a 6pm timeslot and has been cut to ribbons, over 1 min 20 secs alone in what has to be one of the tamer episodes of the season. They even cut out Doyle's 'Get a job, you lazy sow' comment. A petition for a later timeslot has already started. Anyone who's interested go to www.petitiononline.com/Angel/petition.html

Thanks

Rewatching the Season 2 Buffy ep, Halloween & in it Cordy wants to spend time with Angel. In a manner of speaking, that did happen. Although not romantically. ;-)

Funny. Angel lives in the office building from DS9:"Past Tense".

By Ryan Whitney on Friday, February 11, 2005 - 5:33 pm:

The vampire makeup in this episode was horrible. For whatever reason, the producers of "Angel" tried to go in a different direction with the makeup than what was done on "Buffy", and it just looked bad. Thankfully, the show fixed this problem by the third or fourth episode.

By Art Vandelay on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 5:34 am:

IIRC, they fired the make up crew after seeing the ep.

This is rerunning on UK SciFi; for fans of Lost one of the vamps Angel kills in the intro is played by Josh Holloway (the actor who plays Sawyer)
