Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Angel: Season Three: Birthday

By Ryan Whitney on Thursday, December 20, 2001 - 5:59 am:

With Angel being father to a human baby, I'm guessing that if the kid sticks around through the end of the series, we'll see Angel become human again in the series finale (as prophecied in a scroll). I'd find it odd if the show's producers/writers would let the show end with the prospect of Angel watching his son grow into an old man and die, while Angel stays eternally youthful.

New topic: Angel's curse

If I'm correct, when Angel became evil in season 2 of Buffy, he didn't know beforehand that one moment of pure happiness would cause him to lose his soul. Angel didn't witness the curse being put on him by the gypsy who cursed him, and just before he lost his soul in season 2 of Buffy, he knew something was wrong with him, but I didn't get the impression that he was thinking, "••••! I must have experienced a moment of pure hapiness, and now I'm losing my soul because of it! I should never have slept with Buffy!" My question is, now that Angel knows about the "pure happiness" clause in his curse, can he really achieve a moment of pure happiness, given the consequence of that achievement? Say Angel's feeling really happy and getting close to pure happiness. Wouldn't Angel be thinking, "Oh man, this is great, but I don't want to get too happy here, or else I'm gonna lose my soul."? Wouldn't that thought then preclude the prospect of pure happiness in that moment? Let's say that Angel expects this little failsafe to kick in when appropriate, and it allows Angel to bury to his subconscious any worries about losing his soul for experiencing pure happiness. The worry is still there in his subconscious, and it would preclude Angel from experiencing a moment of pure happiness. I suggest this because I think that Angel could now make love to Buffy (or another woman he loves) without losing his soul, and while having a great time doing it.

This brings me to another issue. Why did Willow restore Angel's soul in the season 2 finale of Buffy with the exact same curse as before? I know that at that point, Willow was still a novice in the witchcraft area. But, did Willow even look into the idea of removing the "pure happiness" clause from the curse? Seems like that clause was a major bug in the curse, given that if Angel loses his soul, he turns evil and starts killing people. Back to when the original curse was placed on Angel, the gypsies put that clause in the curse so that Angel would not know true happiness while he had a soul. The only problem is that the gypsies neglected to tell Angel that this clause was in the curse. That severely compromised the purpose of the curse, and it left the door open for Angel to become Angelus again and resume his evil, killing ways.

The subject of Angel's Curse would be better suited to the Angel Sink as it's not really addressed in this episode, and your last paragraph could be copied over to the Buffy episode where she recast the spell.

Wesley mentions going over Cordie's CAT scans.
Why would Cordie's doctor give them to Wesley?
Does Angel pay enough for her medical to have multiple CAT scans?
IIRC, CAT (Computer Aided Tomography) scans have been replaced by CT (Computerized Tomography) scans.

Nice to see Skip back, & Doyle, even if it was just file footage.

Frankly I was wondering if this ep was going to be Cordie's swan song & if maybe the curse would be passed on to Fred.

When Cordie is waking up & one arm couldn't be seen & I wondered if that was going to look demonic. Then I wondered if it would be a blue tentacle like the character of Mike from College Roomies From Hell!!! ;-)

So how did the demon the girl summoned get taken care of? Did TPTB just overwrite time again & have another actress & 2 other demon hunters take care of it?

Guys.. is anyone wondering how the writing got on the wall in Angel's hotel?

In our reality, Angel wrote it when he was possessed by Cordy, but in the alternate reality she wouldn't have been there as she had her show running in Hollywood?
