Peace out

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Angel: Season Four: Peace out
By Matt Pesti on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 - 8:47 pm:

Plot Synopis: Angel finds out Jasmines name, she tries to take over the world. She dies.

Okay, I'm still lost. So Jasmine, or "Grrr Arggh" as her real name is pronounced, was simply a god that decided to become more proactive! Wasn't that what the Pah-Wraiths claimed their sin was?

Again, what was with the reign of fire, the Beast, Angelus, "the master plan" to make Connor have sex with Cordie, the visit from Darla, the elimination of demons, it all doesn't make sense. Was the First Evil involved? Gosh, I need an I-2 Chart.

No spoiler warning? Well, I have one:

And why the heck is Lilah back? I thought it would by Cordy standing at the door.

Does Joss enjoy kicking the c**p out of cops these days? Two days, two eps and several cops taken out by the main characters.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 3:32 am:

Given that his shows (Buffy/Angel/Firefly) usually feature outcasts/loners/vigilantes working without sanction, or in defiance, of Authority he probably does.

I've noticed Ben Edlund's name on the credits for a few shows. Isn't he the creator of The Tick?

Since vampires don't need to breathe why is Angel gasping for breath while he climbs?

When they realize that Jasmine has started to broadcast, Gunn says, "We're alone. Just us now." Really? Wouldn't people in some parts of the world be asleep while this press conference is going on? Wouldn't some people be at the movies, or on the internet, or playing cards, etc., etc. And finally, just because most people in the world own TVs, that don't mean everyone does.

Jasmine said she killed thousands to save billions. Ummm, at 6 billion plus people Earth is way overcrowded. Saving billions will just result in more people, less space, less food, more strain, etc., etc., it really isn't a Good thing to do.

I wondered about Lilah too. However, I believe that the senior partners of Wolfram & Hart are extra-dimensionally based. So once Jasmine was out of the way they resurrected their employees. Remember in a previous episode a former head of the firm was killed, but his contract extended into the afterlife.

Actually, I think she was one of The Powers That Be before this... Gunn remarks in one of the previous episodes about her being a Power That Was, and think I recall Angel referring to her as a Power at some point in this episode.

Wasn't that what the Pah-Wraiths claimed their sin was? - Matt Pesti

If memory serves, this was also what prompted God to cast the Devil out of heaven.

Again, what was with the reign of fire, the Beast, Angelus, "the master plan" to make Connor have sex with Cordie, the visit from Darla, the elimination of demons, it all doesn't make sense. Was the First Evil involved? - Matt Pesti

As I have said all along, the First is not involved in any way, shape, or form (except perhaps in whatever way the First contributed to the existence of Evil).

The master plan was to create a situation in which Jasmine could be born on this earth. So basically, Jasmine manipulated our world... brought back Darla... transcended Cordie... etc., so that she can be born. Obviously bringing a Power That Be into the world takes a lot more than just the will to be here.

Additionally, I think this entire scenario was intended to be a (sometimes not-too-subtle) jab at extremist versions organized religion. (Blind devotion, infidels should be destroyed, etc.) And the apocalyptic machinations that brought Jasmine into the world are not that different than the signs that harbor the Second Coming of Christ according to Revelation.

While I didn't expect it to have been Lilah who appeared at the door, I always suspected she'd be back... she was too good a character to remain lost.

By Scott McClenny on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 11:42 am:

It appears that Jasmine wasn't as omnipotent and
omniscient as she would have liked everyone to think she was otherwise she would have known what Angel was up to BEFORE he came back.

After everyone comes out of their Jasmine induced lethargy and start rioting Jasmine confronts Angel and blames him for the chaos.Actually the rioters were just venting what Jasmine had just
kept repressed. All the anger and hostility had never really gone anywhere,it had simply been cloaked and once Jasmine was defeated people started to act normally.

Great line:"She eats PEOPLE!?"Gunn

I also believe it's Gunn who refers to The Twilight Zone ep. To Serve Man,or perhaps that was
Lorne or one of the others.

Connor says that he isn't turned off by Jasmine's true appearance because he has seen worse in the
dimension he was raised.Connor needs some SERIOUS
psychological help!

As far as Jasmine taking over the world and the gang being the only nonJasminites around, what about all the primitive tribes that have never seen a radio let alone a tv?

Gunn is pretty persistent in kicking at the cell door.Fortunately Connor was too •••••• to post a guard.:)

The question is is that really Lilah at the end?
Or is it another demon playing around with the gang?

By Matt Pesti on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 10:47 pm:

I really don't think spoiler tags are nessicary on a board discussing the episode in question, for an episode that just aired.

Keith: While the earth being "Way too overcrowded" is hyperbole, the whole point of being a god is being able to surpass the human condition.

DS: I think "god" serves as an synonym for "powers".

Satan didn't want to be more proactive, rather he was full of pride and had no concept of his place in reality. The Servant tried to be the Master.

The First-Jasmine connection is best commented on after Chosen, after the crossover.

All the rest of your points assume Jasmine is evil. Moral ambiguoity is the theme of this season. As the dead thing said it, "You ended world peace"

By Darth Sarcasm on Friday, May 02, 2003 - 12:19 am:

Matt --

While I agree with you that spoiler warnings are unnecessary for the episode, keep in mind that the first few words of your post appear on the Last Day/Last Week lists... thus someone who may avoid a particular board until after he/she views an episode may still have material spoiled. In the case of this episode, we don't know that Angel is successful in his quest or not.

By Matt Pesti on Friday, May 02, 2003 - 2:51 pm:

Darth: Good point. I forgot about that. Although, I didn't say who killed her, just that she died.

And just too hot! What a babe! Anyway, though I saw Stephanie Romanov's name I completely forgot about her till I saw her at the very end.

Do you think there's any chance Jasmine is a parody of Oprah?

By Callie on Thursday, October 07, 2004 - 8:49 am:

Why did Jasmine's face improve after she'd been 'outed'? Where did the maggots go and why did she now have eyes again?
