It's official: 5's all she wrote. Check out the PR babble:

Like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including Frasier and Friends, the cast, crew, writers and producers of Angel deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on The WB.

"Angel was great so let's cancel it."

Say again?

Some of you may have heard the hilarious news. I thought this would be a good time to weigh in. to answer some obvious questions: No, we had no idea this was coming. Yes, we will finish out the season. No, I don't think the WB is doing the right thing. Yes, I'm grateful they did it early enough for my people to find other jobs.

Yes, my heart is breaking.

When Buffy ended, I was tapped out and ready to send it off. When Firefly got the axe, I went into a state of denial so huge it may very well cause a movie. But Angel... we really were starting to feel like we were on top, hitting our stride -- and then we strode right into the Pit of Snakes 'n' Lava. I'm so into these characters, these actors, the situations we're building... you wanna know how I feel? Watch the first act of "The Body."

As far as TV movies or whatever, I'm not thinking that far ahead. I actually hope my actors and writers are all too busy. We always planned this season finale to be a great capper to the season and the show in general. (And a great platform for a new season, of course.) We'll proceed ahead as planned.

I've never made mainstream TV very well. I like surprises, and TV isn't about surprises, unless the surprise is who gets voted off of something. I've been lucky to sneak this strange, strange show over the airwaves for as long as I have. I don't FEEL lucky, but I understand that I am.

Thanks all for your support, your community, and your perfectly sane devotion. It's meant a lot. I regret nothing (except the string of grisley murders in the 80's -- what was THAT all about?) Remember the words of the poet:

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by and they CANCELLED MY FRIKKIN' SHOW. I totally shoulda took the road that had all those people on it. Dam*."

See you soon.

I'm sorry to see Angel go, but I can't honestly say I'm too surprised. Seasons 3 and 4 seemed lackluster compared to 1 & 2 - some weeks Conner was trying to fit in, the next week he'd ostracise himself again over the slightest thing, Charisma's lack of interest (ok, she got herself pregnant, but it's been obvious for a while that she wanted out), using up the job lot of bullet time effects (especially in season 4) and so on.

But it wouldn't be fair if Angel gets cancelled and Enterprise somehow manages to avoid the same fate.

All in all, thanks for the good times Joss. I hope it's not too long before we see your work on our screens again.

Figures - I was finally getting into Angel again & they go and cancel it! I had stopped watching a couple of seasons ago out of boredom, but this season has been more interesting.

By Matt Pesti on Sunday, February 22, 2004 - 2:23 pm:

What the WB meant, is that it's better they cancel it now and let it pass with a decent finale, then leaving it with an uncertian ending or a cliffhanger and calling that a finale.

By Matt Pesti on Sunday, February 22, 2004 - 2:25 pm:

Or better yet, giving it the X-files treatment where the show never ends.

By Scott McClenny on Monday, February 23, 2004 - 3:36 pm:

I think the show kind of started to go downhill after the 100th episode. Also another reason why
could be the fact that Charisma Carpenter is no
longer on the show.IMHO Cordie and her relationship to Angel was the reason the show was such a hit in the first place. There was no way, even with the addition of James Marsters and
Mercedes McNab that that chemistry could be ever
replaced.

You're talking about The X-Files, right?

Personally, I don't think that Cordy's presence was as big of a factor as it's made out to be. She wasn't even there for nice large parts of the last two years.

Last I heard, there's still a chance that the show might be renewed for another season due to the fan reaction.

By MythicFox on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 6:18 pm:

Well, it's been over a year since the last post on this particular board, and I was obviously wrong.

Any word on whether they're going to do a TV movie to wrap things up like I'd heard? I tend to avoid official sites for shows like the plague, as when I want to read news on a show I like to do it without spending 20 minutes for a pointless Flash animation to load (I'm on dialup, and not very good dialup at that).

I saw Boreanaz on an advertisement for PETA earlier today, and that got me thinking about it.

By Art Vandelay on Friday, July 29, 2005 - 4:01 am:

I don't there's been any talk since the series ended. I believe Boreanaz has a new series starting soon so I assume that will be taking up all his time.
