Knight of the Phoenix, Part 2

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Knight Rider: Season 1: Knight of the Phoenix, Part 2
Knight of the Phoenix, Part 2

After using many of KITT's abilities to win the demolition derby, Michael sets up a meeting with Tanya, the head of a criminal orginization set up to steal designs for a microchip from COMTRON systems. Instead of meeting Tanya, Michael ends up in an ambush with her goons, which lands him in jail and KITT in enemy hands. KITT self-activates and breaks Michael out. That night, Michael sneaks into the COMTRON building. Michael finds out what Tanya is up to, but not before she escapes. Using KITT's abilities as an aid, Michael stops Tanya and her men from boarding an airplane and leaving for good. Unfortunately, Tanya tries to kill Michael again, but her bullet is deflected by KITT and she dies instead. As the episode ends, Michael and Devon decide to work together, since Michael realizes that he can still make a difference.

THOUGHTS:
-More excitement than part 1, including many more beautiful shots of KITT and action with Michael.

-Several new features on KITT:
+Oil Slick
+Smoke Screen
+Skiing Drive (driving with only one side of wheels on the ground)
+Auto Eject
+Auto Roof Open
+Microwave Mobile Line (telephone)
+Turbo Boost (either for extra speed or "jump" capability)

-Some fun scenes, during the derby as well as the jailbreak and at the end, when KITT turbo boosts over a semi!

FAVORITE QUOTE:
"Yeah, I care. But don't tell anybody, alright?"
-Michael to KITT, after KITT turbo boosts through the side of a semi and pretends not to respond.

NITS:
-The red scanning light is on for most of the episode, especially in the night scenes, but it's off for some reason in other scenes. For instance, it suddenly turns off during the derby for no aparent reason, then is on again a few shots later. Also, just as KITT smashes through the windows of the COMTRON building, and during KITT's first turbo boost.

-During the durby Michael tells KITT he's setting KITT on auto-pursuit, but he only presses the auto button.

-There's a cluster of buttons on KITT's center console that reads left to right: A, ?, B, C, D. In the first episode, Devon pressed D, C, B to activate KITT's collision-avoidance system. In this episode, the widow's son (Buddy) presses the C and D buttons but this time they release the oil slick and the smoke screen, respectively.

-Buddy is obviously replaced by a dummy during the derby scene where KITT engages skiiing-drive (Michael is leaning to the left but the kid's dummy is totally straight in his seat, and later the dummy bounces around in the seat). Also, Buddy totally disappears from the car for a few scenes (right after he lets go of the smoke screen button).

-Why does Michael need to hit the auto roof button? KITT did it automatically earlier, with the car thieves.

-Michael seems to land on the roof pretty smoothly, even if he was ejected. Almost like there's wires pulling him up.

-Also with the auto eject, KITT tells Michael to set a gauge for 600 pounds but Michael never sets anything and he still lands on the roof fine.

-When KITT starts up after Michael is shot, the creators reused the startup from part 1, whyen Devon drove KITT up to Michael.

-During the second turbo boost, there is one shot that shows the bottom of KITT as smooth. Every other shot of the bottom of the car shows the usual car parts on the bottom side of KITT.

-After the plane explodes and Michael gives KITT control, KITT's voicebox looks silver rather than black.

Other nits:

Michael's wound jumps from his right sholder to his left during the drive to the airport.

When the bad guy shoots KITT from the helicopter, the rebound hits the rear left side of the helicopter, but the smoke comes out of the rear right side.
