Chariot of Gold

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Knight Rider: Season 1: Chariot of Gold
Chariot of Gold

Professor Graham Doble, an old friend of Devon's, comes to the FLAG mansion to award Bonnie membership into his organization "Helios." Helios members are pre-tested for overall knowledge, and Bonnie has passed the test (Devon is made an honorary member). Meanwhile, on his way to meet an old archaeologist friend of Devon's, Michael instead finds the man totally paranoid due to an unidentifiable drug. After Devon and Doble arrive to see the man, he is killed. It turns out that 2 other Helios members have been killed recently, with no apparent connection. In any case, Devon, Michael and Bonnie go to the Helios mansion to attend a get-together. In a back room, several Helios members are briefed on a certain vehicle they must now steal - KITT. On his return to the dig site, Michael and KITT find that the "artifacts" have actually been planted there less than a month earlier. Michael returns to the mansion - sneaking in this time - and finds both the tape of KITT and Bonnie's entry test, which she actually failed. He then finds Bonnie herself, passed out. When he gets Bonnie out though, she pulls a gun on him and has him meet with Doble. Doble was the one who created the mind-control/altering drugs, and he reveals his insane new plan - to start a new human civilization underground, with only the best and brightest. The dig site was just a cover story. Michael is taken to the site and nearly killed, but one of the Helios members, Dr. Charlene Hanover, saves him - she's tired of listening to that madman, Doble. While Michael was buried, Bonnie reprogrammed KITT to help Doble and his men break into a museum. Luckily, by reminding KITT what KITT's obligations are (KITT cannot kill Michael since KITT's primary function is to preserve human life), Michael stops the breakin, and with Bonnie's renewed help is able to stop Doble once and for all. As the episode ends, Michael shows Devon that he found Devon's real entry test, and Devon passed it after all.

THOUGHTS:
-Okay episode, felt like a James Bond-like plot though. If you've seen "Our Man Bashir" (ST:DS9), this episode seems very similar.

-Fun stuff with Bonnie and Irving!

-Star Trek actor watch: Theodore Bickel (as Graham Doble) played Worf's "human father" in "Family" (TNG).

-Star Trek actress watch: Lynne Toppin (as Charlene Hanover) played Onaya (the woman who wanted Jake's synaptic energy) in "The Muse" (DS9).

-New feature on KITT:
+This is the first episode where someone hooks KITT up to a device where KITT can scan someone's vital signs.

FAVORITE QUOTE:
"It's not as if you've been left out. You're an honorary member!"
-Bonnie to Devon

NITS:
-The first shot of the Helios mansion is clearly a matte painting.

-How did the Helios members get shots of KITT? All of the shots come from past episodes, which makes no sense. For instance, how did they get footage of KITT braking out of COMTRON headquarters from the OUTSIDE? Where do all these shots come from?

-When KITT is being told of the break-in plan's phases by Bonnie and Doble, some of the shots from inside of KITT are from precious episodes (you can tell because KITT's voice modulator is solid red, rather than it's new 3-bar type).

-When KITT is about to run Michael over, KITT's tires are shown as Goodyear brand, yet in other episodes they don't have any writing on them.

-The end sequence is missing the "One man can make a difference, Michael..." quote.
