Knights of the Fast Lane

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Knight Rider: Season 3: Knights of the Fast Lane
Knights of the Fast Lane

Two "Banzai" racers (night racers who use illegal top-of-the-line vehicles) compete one night for cash, but when one of them has a brake failure, he hits a spectator named Stacy Courtney. Stacy was working to be a cheerleader under Mark Taylor, one of the men in the race. The other man, Jack Lehigh, is Mark's second man in his racing company, "Racer's Edge." When Michael finds out about the accident, he investigates on his own. Jim Courtney, Stacy's father, was Michael Long's partner years earlier. At first, Jim doesn't take kindly to Michael's usage of all the leads in the case, but eventually he finds that Michael knows more than he does. Michael believes that the paint on a dumpster near the site of the accident belongs to an illegal vehicle owned by Mark Taylor. At first, Mark is hesitant to race Michael, but to get rid of a worried Jack Lehigh, he has Jack race Michael first, but sabotages Jack's car, killing him. When he finally races Michael, Michael lets him win his prize - KITT. Michael turns off KITT's systems and leaves on a homing device, then goes to see Stacy's roommate, Diane Landreaux, who confirms Michael's suspicion of Mark. Mark kidnaps Diane, but with Bonnie's help, Michael and Jim Courtney work together one more time to stop Mark before he escapes in the same car he scratched the dumpster with. Diane is okay, and it appears that Stacy will make a full recovery. As the episode ends, Jim Courtney gives Michael something - a badge that belonged to his old partner, Michael Long.

THOUGHTS:
-Nice episode, good pacing and dramatic story.

Some fun stuff:
-The "Ghostbusters" theme played during football/cheerleader practice!
-Michael asking Devon for $50,000 and Devon saying, "Now I'm sitting down..."
-KITT catching the football and ejecting it out.

New features on KITT:
+Homing Device
+Power On/Off
+Watch (remote) Power ON/Off

FAVORITE QUOTE:
"I place it's complexity somewhere above checkers and below World War 2."
-KITT, about football

NITS:
-Jim Courtney doesn't recognize Michael as Michael Long, but Simpson did in "A Good Knight's Work" and he was a bad guy!

-After Michael turns KITT's power off, KITT's scanner has a delay in turning off.

Mark and Jack's company was called "The Racer's Edge"? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that the auto parts store where Brian worked in "The Fast and the Furious"?

I always thought that phrase was trademarked by STP!

Yes, it was in fact "Racer's Edge."

Well, the bad guys in these shows tend to be more obsessive than good guys.
