---Synopsis:
Ross finds out his ex-wife Carol is pregnant, and goes to see the sonogram with Carol and her lesbian lover, Susan. Ross and Monica's parents come for dinner, which stresses Monica out. Rachel returns the ring to Barry, who is much less upset about the break-up than expected.

---Notes:
This episode marks the first appearance of Elliott Gould and Christina Pickles as Monica's parents, the first such appearance by any of the gang's parents.

This episode also is the first in which Phoebe refers to having a sister who is a waitress, though her name is not given, and to Chandler being an only child.

It also marks the first reference to Monica's childhood weight, though her father understandably refers to her has having merely been "chubby".

When did Ross and Carol produce the baby? According to The One With the Flashback, Ross discovered Carol's lesbianism approximately a year prior to The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate.

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, July 01, 2003 - 10:35 pm:

What in The One With the Flashback indicated that it was a year prior? I seem to recall Rachel mentioning to her friends how long it was until her wedding; Did she say it was a year? The only other indicator I can remember is that the bar would be converted into the coffee house, which would take anywhere from a matter of weeks to a few months. If it was a year, was Ross really that despondent for an entire year over his breakup?

By Brian Fitzgerald on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 2:20 pm:

Could have taken that long to get the divorce finalized and having to actualy sign on the dopped line and end the marrage brought it all back.

By LUIGI NOVI on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 11:03 pm:

Yes, but I'd still like Lee to tell me what in that episode indicated it was a year.

By Lee Jamilkowski (Ljamilkowski) on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 4:19 pm:

Rachel and her friends say (I don't remember the exact wording) that "one year from today, you will be Mrs. Barry..." and whatever the last name of Barry was at that time, "DDS". So between the flashback and The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate, a year occurs. And we know that Ross had just found out about Carol being lesbian at that time.

My only possible explanation (that I have seen on other websites) is that Carol and Ross tried to work around the lesbian thing (which seems to have some support (if you read into it) from The One With the Candy Hearts.

The episode repeated not too long ago, and yeah, I saw that line by Rachel, Lee. Thanks.

Personally I don't Ross ever completely got over everything that happened with Carol and Susan.

Cast Notes

Christina Pickles makes the first of many appearances as Judy Geller. She's been a longtime character actress, but I remember her the most for a guilty pleasure from my childhood, Masters of the Universe, where she was the Sorceress.

Sooner or later, Anita Barone will get a successful sitcom. She's 0 for 2 right now, with "The Jeff Foxworthy Show" and "Daddio." (and don't even mention the aborted Rick Reynolds comedy, "Life...and Stuff").

(I think we know who Elliott Gould is)

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, November 23, 2004 - 11:07 am:

Yeah, that's were I first knew Pickles too, Mike. (I knew at the time that she had been on St. Elsewhere, but I never watched that.)

Boy, could the two actresses who played Carol look *any more* different? Apparently the producers replaced Anita Barone with Jane Sibbit because Barone wanted a more full-time TV role. She was later on Jeff Foxworthy's sitcom, the ABC version, before they cancelled it and it was picked up by NBC, who retooled it and moved it's setting from the South to Bloomington, Indiana and added a second son, played by Johnathan "The Human Head Weighs Eight Pounds" Lipnicki. Who else was on Foxworthy's sitcom? None other than a young Haley Joel Osment!

Anyway, this is the episode with the "some kind of misunderstanding" line that I have infamously quoted here before, as I pointed out that while that kind of mocking dialogue was done at the beginning, years later the show would end up doing the same things they made fun of when it first started. How about that!
