3. The One With the Thumb

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Friends: Season 1: 3. The One With the Thumb
First aired: 10/6/94

Written by Jeffrey Astrof & Mike Sikowitz
Directed by James Burrows

---Guest Cast:
Geoffrey Lower as Alan
Beth Grant as Lizzy
Jennifer Lewis as Paula

---Synopsis:
Monica begins dating someone new, but the gang’s reaction to him is a surprise, as is the fact that Monica herself has a different one. Chandler begins smoking for the first time in three years. Phoebe has a run of bizarre good luck, but reacts to it as if it’s bad.

---Notes:
This episode is the first to reference Chandler’s recurring smoking habit.

Interestingly, it also seems that this episode was attempting to give Monica the signature character trait she tends to go out with guys that the rest of the gang doesn’t like, but this point seems to be dropped after this episode.

When Chandler knocks on the balcony window from outside when it begins raining, it's obvious that the sound effect of the knock was dubbed it, because it sounds like knocking on wood instead of glass.

Huh.. I didn't notice that one... I'll have to go watch my DVD again.

This episode was strange, I didn't like how negative Phoebe was about the whole good luck thing.

Hmm...a thumb in a can of soda. Is that where Wendy's got the idea? One of the stupid angles inducted into Wrestlecrap was "Shawn (Michaels) Loses His Smile" and the guys who wrote it up added this funny line: "Apparently it was found in a bowl of chili at Wendy's!" HAH!!!!

As for getting the $1000 credited to her account, I totally agree with Chandler when he's like "What bank do you go to, I should open an account there!" Good luck with that, man, cuz banks like that DON'T EXIST! Simple as that!

And then there was THIS dialogue:

Ross: Okay. I think it's time to change somebody's nicotine patch. (Does so.)
Monica: (entering) Hey. Where's Joey?
Chandler: Joey ate my last stick of gum, so I killed him. Do you think that was wrong?
Rachel: I think he's across the hall.
Monica: Thanks. (Goes to fetch him.)
Ross: (finishing changing Chandler's nicotine patch) There y'go.
Chandler: (deadpan) Ooh, I'm alive with pleasure now.

Wouldnt that have been cool if they really did have Chandler murder Joey only because of his nicotine withdrawal? Wouldnt that have been cool? Huh? Well? Huh?

Well, maybe only in one of the many alternate realities that makes up the Multiverse, but definetly not in the regular "home" universe we all know that the show took place in!

Oh well. Like I've already said elsewhere, I wish that the show had re-visited the alternate reality they showed in season six. It didnt happen, though! (I still want to know why Ben existed there, because I thought that Ross and Carol never "did it", ya know?)
