13. The One With the Boobies

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Friends: Season 1: 13. The One With the Boobies

I thought Fisher Stevens as Roger, the pysch student (or maybe he was a doctor, I dont remember) who dates Phoebe, was interesting at first. And Pheebs, at first, thought he was brilliant. But he keeps "analyzing" the friends quite bluntly, and they dont like what they hear. And it's only when "Rog" makes fun of the coffee house and her friends to her face that Pheebs realizes what a jerk he can be, and she ends it with him. I liked his assessment of Chandler and his need for cracking jokes and sarcasm when he says "Only child, right? Parents divorced before you hit puberty?" And when Chandler wants to know how he knows that, he replies "It's textbook." Funny thing, that's pretty much me in a nutshell! How about that!

Anyway, I read about Fisher Stevens and how he was not invited back to the show to play Roger again, even though he was mentioned in another episode. Apparently, he was not entirely comfortable with the show's format and the dialogue he had to deliver (i.e. "big cups that might as well have nipples on them") and he even spoke to David Schwimmer and attempted to convince him to leave the show, because Stevens was convinced that it would totally wreck Schwimmer's career. Needless to say, this eventually got back to the producers, and he was written out of any future scripts. This was told by Stevens himself in the book "Fired! Tales Of The Canned, Cancelled, Downsized & Dismissed" by screenwriter Annabelle Gurwich and numerous other people who also suffered the same fate as she did. I read it, it was pretty interesting.

So Fisher Stevens thought this show wouldn't last, huh? Oh well, even TV Guide give it a less-than-good review when it debuted ("Does TV really need another pack-of-pals show?") We can't be right all the time, after all. Also, in the late 80's, Winona Ryder's agent reportedly begged her not to do "Heathers" because she thought it would ruin Ryder's career. Well, she did do it and that wasn't what happened. As for Stevens, he went on to play the villian in the laughably outdated "Hackers" and then he was on the CBS series "Early Edition". I dont know what he's done since then.

As for the "boobies", I did wonder for a while how they filmed *that scene*. I'm pretty sure Aniston did not really want Perry to see them, as they were co-workers (even though there were reports of them having dated before the show began) and they were able to used camera tricks to only make it *seem* like he saw them after he startled her after coming in the apartment through the *unlocked* door! But that's a subject of nitpicking for another time...
