16. The One The Morning After

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Friends: Season 3: 16. The One The Morning After
First aired: 2/20/97

Written by Marta Kauffman and David Crane
Directed by James Burrows

---Guest Cast:
Angela Featherstone as Chloe
James Michael Tyler as Gunther
Maury Ginsberg as Isaac
Cynthia Mann as Jasmine

---Synopsis:
In this conclusion to the previous episode, in which Rachel broke up with Ross, and Ross, thinking Rachel consoled herself in the arms of Mark, hooked up with Chloe, Rachel calls Ross to tell him that she doesn’t want to break up with him. Ross, having woken up after having been with Chloe, desperately tries to keep Rachel from finding out that he was with her.

---Notes:
This episode marks the end of Ross and Rachel’s romantic relationship. Although they would try to get back together again in The One With the Jellyfish(4.1), it would not last past that episode.

Great Line:
(Ross tries to get Rachel to forgive him after being with Chloe)
Ross: “It was a mistake! I made a mistake, OK?”
Rachel: “A mistake? What were you trying to put it in? Her purse?”
Phoebe: (Listening in on the conversation, and not knowing what they’re talking about) “Wh…Where did he put it?”

Great Line2:
Ross: “I thought our relationship dead!”
Rachel: “Well, you sure had a HELL of a time at the wake!”

Great Line3:
(As Rachel orders pizza, the gang, secretly holed up in Monica’s room, ponders their own hunger…)
Phoebe: “We could eat the wax, it’s organic!”
Chandler: “Oh great, food with hair on it.”
Phoebe: “No, not the used wax!”
Chandler: “Because…that would be crazy?”

Wow, isn’t it convenient that Isaac has a sister who works with Phoebe, and that Jasmine’s roommate is Gunther?

When Ross and Rachel go back to her apartment and fight over his being with Chloe, how can neither of them not hear the rest of gang in Monica’s room?

Dan Gunther: Actually, from Ross's point of view, I should say that it is rather inconvenient. :-)

I think the fact that Ross and Rachel broke up was the best thing to happen to the show. Until then, the show was too focused on Ross loves Rachel but she doesn't know then Rachel knows but Ross is with someone.
