Air America

By Dude on Saturday, October 09, 2004 - 2:09 am:

My favorite show is The Majority Report with Sam & Janeane. I espeically like how Janeane, without shame, refers to Donal Rumsfeld as a "douchebag." :)

I also like Mike Malloy and Randi Rhodes.

By LUIGI NOVI on Saturday, October 09, 2004 - 11:37 am:

I can't stand Randi Rhodes. She is so annoying.

By Brian Webber on Saturday, October 09, 2004 - 12:21 pm:

Are you kidding? I love her! She says the things I'm afraid to say in public. I'm even registered on her website disucssion board (my username is Rrowl-Captain, and my Avatar is the Kzin alphabet; please don't sue Mr. Niven).

By The Phantom Stranger on Saturday, October 09, 2004 - 9:55 pm:

Just out of curiosity, but what does "eccepting" mean?

By Srussel (Srussel) on Sunday, October 10, 2004 - 2:06 pm:

Yeah Luigi, why? I adore her. I even sent her a marriage proposal once (granted I was drunk at the time, it was my birthday, but still).

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, October 11, 2004 - 12:40 am:

I just can't stand her manner, and her histrionics. She's as annoying in that regard as Rush Limbaugh.

By Brian Webber on Monday, October 11, 2004 - 1:44 am:

Oh now that's just mean, comparing Randi to that three-hour hatemonger. :( If you don't like her you must hate Mike Malloy who uses terms like "the Bush Crime Family."

By Rona on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 - 8:09 am:

Al Franken's show (shown on the Sundance channel) is a joy; an intelligent and civil discussion of political matters. To support this, one has only to look at one of his conservative counterparts-Sean Hannity. His radio program is a mean spirited, hate-filled, pack of lies in support of a grossly ignorant politician.

By LUIGI NOVI on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 2:51 am:

I haven't listened to Malloy, so I'm ignorant of his speaking style.

By Dan on Sunday, October 17, 2004 - 3:20 pm:

Its good that no one is listening to Frankensteins show. They're listenening to O'Reilly, Hannity, and Rush in droves though. Most of America isn't hungering for liberal propaganda.

By LUIGI NOVI on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 12:59 am:

Actually, I've heard that Franken is beating Limbaugh in some markets, and given that Limbaugh is on in more market's, that's pretty impressive.

By Brian Webber on Saturday, November 13, 2004 - 1:11 pm:

And Randi is beating O'Reilly in a lot of markets too. Clear Chanell is diving to the Left faster than mark Fuhrman at the Apollo Theatre. ;-)

By Non Red on Sunday, November 14, 2004 - 10:50 am:

Franken appeals to a more educated audience. Naturally, Harvard students (residing in a blue state) are more likely to listen to Franken.

Hillbillies, of course, prefer Hannity and Limbaugh. The Republicans did scare them telling them Kerry was going to ban the bible (in West Virginia).

I like Air America Radio and listen to it online, mostly catching Franken's show, "Majority Report", Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy. Luigi, if you listen to Malloy, you may find him somewhat annoying at times cuz he does tend to yell a lot in his constant diatribes, parts of which I generally agree with but he could also deliver them with a bit less vehemence, IMO. Sometimes I'll catch a bit of "Morning Sedition" with comedian Marc Maron, but not very often cuz of its being on so late.

By Rona on Saturday, December 11, 2004 - 7:57 am:

The Sundance channel stopped running Franken's program after the election. This week, however, they did run a program (as part of their First Amendment series) on Franken vs Fox. The show highlighted just how ridiculous and without merit the Fox lawsuit against Franken was (he used "their" trademark slogan "Fair and Balanced" in the title of his book). The lawyer representing Fox had the nerve to stand before a judge and argue that readers would be confused by Franken's book and might think it was published by Fox. Then again, considering how uninformed Fox viewers are, maybe there is some merit to that argument.

As of January 21, Air America is done.

By Brian FitzGerald (Brifitz1980) on Saturday, January 23, 2010 - 11:40 pm:

Sorry to hear that. I used to date a girl who worked for their Atlanta branch "Air Atlanta." At the risk of inviting a flame war I've heard it expressed elsewhere that the reason they could never get the kind of following right-wing talk radio has is because:

They weren't strictly partisan and would often go after Democrats for not being liberal enough, rather than twist and turn facts to support the party line like right-wing radio does.

Liberals don't need constant reminders and one-sided reiterations that their ideas are the right ones like Republicans do.

Liberal ideas tend to be complex ideas that require facts/knowledge to understand and are hard to make into sound bytes; while Rush, Beck & Hannity tend to be "I'm right because they hate America and I'm going to yell as loud as I can until you believe it."

By Norman Buchwald (Norm) on Saturday, January 30, 2010 - 7:05 pm:

The problem with Air America is that they kept letting go/firing talented people. First it was the writing staff (who were top notch people similar to those who wrote for the Daily Show), then their entire news staff. Meanwhile talented people such as Lizz Winnstead, Mark Maron, Mike Malloy, Janeane Garofolo, Sam Seder, Laura Flanders, and even Randi Rhodes got the boot while Al Franken ran for Senate and Rachel Maddow got her opportunity on MSNBC. I mean who was left, really that had an attractive show on Air America?!! Given that, they give kudos for giving a liberal talk show market (Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz need to give thanks for stations that were created as Air America satellites that also aired their shows)--given that liberal talk radio is never going to be as vast as right wing for the reasons Biran Fitzgerald mentions above. But it's nice that maybe some of those AM radio listeners could actually hear these viewpoints once in a while while they're moving around their AM radio dial.
