Fidel Castro

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Political Musings: Political Figures: Fidel Castro
By Adam Bomb on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 6:40 am:

Fidel Castro resigned as Cuban president yesterday, although he ceded power to his brother Raul about a year and a half ago. He's outlasted nine U.S. presidents, and outlived eight of them. More here.

As expected, citizens here in Union City, NJ are being asked their feelings about the matter by the New York-area news organizations, since Union City boasted the second highest population of Cubans in country after Miami. (I read that we lost that status to nearby Guttenberg years ago, but perhaps the newsies are still coming here out of ignorance of that or habit; in any case, there's still plenty of Cubans, and first-generation Cuban-Americans for them to talk to.)

Let's hope that this will be the first sign that the regime will eventually die out.

Adam, that math doesn't make sense.

Outlasted:

  1. Eisenhower
  2. Kennedy
  3. Johnson
  4. Nixon
  5. Ford
  6. Carter
  7. Reagan
  8. George H.W. Bush
  9. Clinton

Of that list, Carter, Bush and Clinton are still alive.

Therefore he outlived only six of them.

Thanks, Scott. I miscalculated, using "fuzzy math" and had Carter and Bush Sr. pegged as deceased. I knew I was wrong once my post had hit, but by then it was too late. My bad.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 10:41 am:

Yeah, Scott. Whadja think, that Adam was educated in Cuba, or something??? :-)

By ScottN on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 12:05 pm:

And a correction to my post:

It should read, "Therefore, to date, he has outlived only six of them."

Given his health, it's unlikely he'll outlive any of the others, but you never know.

Moderator, I created a Castro board. Could you move the Castro Resigns thread to there, please?

By ScottN on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 12:05 pm:

Since he's been in the news lately, and the main board was getting cluttered.

By Brian FitzGerald on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 5:01 pm:

Perhaps the US will finally lift that embargo against Cuba now that he is out of power.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 6:42 pm:

It'll be quite awhile before the US and Cuba reestablish friendly relations again.

Without question both Fidel & Raul remember America's accusations that Fidel ordered the assassination of Kennedy because Kennedy wanted Castro killed.

ScottN: Moderator, I created a Castro board. Could you move the Castro Resigns thread to there, please?
Luigi Novi: For the LAST TIME, I am not the moderator of......er......oh yeah, I am the moderator of these ones! :-)

And Brian, I agree with John. The embargo is in place because of the current regime, not simply which Castro brother was in charge of it.

By ScottN on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 10:59 pm:

Ha ha Luigi.

I'd like to point out, in the spirit of nitpicking, that I didn't address anyone by name, but simply called for the moderator.

So there!!! :-O

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 11:39 pm:

Darn. I totally missed that. Ruins my joke. :-)

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Saturday, November 26, 2016 - 12:02 am:

Reports have started to come in saying that Fidel Castro had died at the age of 90. More here.

By Judibug (Judibug) on Saturday, November 26, 2016 - 2:29 am:

Cuba is by American standards, now majority black, and more race neutral than in Batista days. If a bunch of strangely dressed, English speaking, Cuban Americans decide to descend on the island, infected with American racial attitudes...
