Harry and his wife gave Lizzie's lot both barrels.
I'm not surprised at the revelation that the Establishment basically saw Meghan as a fuzzie wuzzie interloper.
I know that were are some idiots out there who were quick to remind us all what happened the last time a British Royal took up with an American divorcee.
However, that was an entirely different situation. Harry is not in line for the throne, after all (his brother William, and then William's son, George, are). So there is really no comparison to Edward VII and Wallis Simpson and anyone trying to make such a comparison, IMO, sounds like a moron.
Also, this is not 1936 anymore. Prince Charles, next in line to the throne is himself a divorcee and so is his current wife, Camilla, the Duchess Of Cornwall. So even if Harry was next in line after Charles, I don't see any issues about it. Of course, since Harry is not next in line, this point is moot.
Edward VIII was rather too willing to ingratiate himself and Wallis with the Nazis. That's why he and Wallis were sent to the Bahamas for the duration of the War.
Conveniently out of everyone's way.
Mind you, I don't think he was an out and out traitor, just a fool who trusted the wrong people.

</i>Dr Who</i> loves Romanov Russia. Pertwee meets Rasputin in the novels and Fake Hartnell visits Yekaterinburg in an audio.
@Tim, weren't they related through Victoria?
A lot of the European Royals at that time were related to Queen Victoria.
Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth, passed away today. He was 99, two months shy of his 100th birthday.
I was hoping he's make it to 100, but it wasn't meant to be
Edward VIII deserted his post in Paris, ignored orders to return to the UK and was sitting in Portugal almost begging to be picked up by the Germans. He'd be a willing collaborator
We'll never know if Edward was a traitor, or just an idiot.
In any case, Churchill was taking no chances and packed him off to be Governor of the Bahamas, well out of everyone's way.
If only George VI could be brought back to life. He’d shake his head in wonder at his Lilibet still being on the throne.
Well, he knew his great-grandmother had a long run.
I have to smile at the Bamboozled episode of Friends, where Joey is rehearsing the game with Ross and Chandler.
One question that Joey shoots at Ross, during the hopping on one foot bit, was who was the longest reigning British Monarch, to which Ross answers: Queen Victoria.
While correct at the time this episode was made, that is no longer the case as Victoria's record for longest reigning was broken by Elizabeth II, I few years ago.
This is now, what TV Tropes calls, Dated History.
The grand ducal house of Hesse and by Rhine is an interest of mine. I was interested to read that the modern German state of Hesse considers the Grand Duchy to be its legal predecessor even though modern Hesse also contains much of Prussian Hesse and lacks Rhenish Hesse.
The Tsarina, Alexandra, was originally Alix of Hesse.
Alix is an easy punching bag for Leninists but if you’d lost your Mum and little sister/emotional twin when you were a child, you would be a bit strange too. World War One armies also did not care that post traumatic stress disorder wasn’t cowardice.
After a few years of Stalin, I'll bet most of the Russian people were thinking: "Come back, Nicky and Alix! All is forgiven!"
Those that started the revolution had no idea, did they. That they were ushering in a regime that was far worse than any Tsar. Ivan The Terrible is Ivan The Pussycat next to Stalin.
Some modern countries whose monarchies were abolished by Communists in the 1940s such as Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria don’t support bringing back their monarchy but are happy to use the old royals as unofficial diplomatic and cultural envoys.
At least said Royals can return to their countries.
And if the Monarchies were every officially brought back, they would be like the British Monarchy, a Constitutional one.
The Greek people are cool to the British royals as the Windsors insist on continuing to refer to the deposed and despised Constantine II of Greece as “King of the Hellenes”.
Wasn't the late Prince Philip of Greek background?
He belonged to the Greek and Danish royal families, according to Wikipedia.
Ah, I see.
Elizabeth II has now clocked up 70 years on the throne.
Only Louis XIV, the Sun King of France, had a longer reign (72 years). And she might break that record as well.
She’s also now got COVID.
That's quite remarkable. She would obviously be one of the best protected persons on the planet, where could she have contracted it from? Not implying anything neferious, just very impressed by how sneaky those viruses can be. Life does find a way.
Well both Charles and Camilla have had it, so it's possible- also she would have lots of staff so it's certainly on the cards......
So far, she is experiencing only mild symptoms. Of course, she has been fully vaccinated, so that will help.
When I think the history she has seen and lived through. She is the last living Head Of State to serve in World War II (the Auxiliary Territorial Service). She saw the British Empire evolve into the Commonwealth Of Nations. The list goes on and on...
I would say that anybody that can make it to age 95, still be mobile, still be coherent and active, that vaccinated or not, she's one tough lady-- tougher than bloody Covid.
straight!
She now marks 70 years on the throne.
British military historian, Mark Felton, made this video about Elizabeth II's World War II service:

I'm glad she beat Covid 7 months ago.
Now she's gone. Haven't heard what the cause was, other than just being 96 years old!

Reason enough imho.
The death of Queen Elizabeth II marks the end of an era.
Of all the people we've lost in 2022, this one really hurts. All my life, the Queen has always been there. Part of me still can't believe she's gone.
I wish King Charles III well. He has some pretty big shoes to fill.
Elizabeth II has passed away at 96.

There is some question as to whether Charles will reign as Charles III or as George VII.
My news channel called him 'Charles the third'.
My condolences to all of the U.K.
She was queen for 7 years before I was even born, so she's someone else famous that was always there, and seemed like she would until the world expired first.
She's on my Canadian money-- the $20 bill and the back of the 25 cent quarter, and now I'm wondering how long that'll last.
Yeah, he announced.
Queen Elizabeth was always there; she is the only British monarch in my lifetime. She took the throne two years and nine months before I was born. She was always a gracious lady. Even when total jackass and eternal publicity hound Donald Trump committed a breach of protocol by walking ahead of her, pretty much blocking the Queen from the news cameras' view.
RIP, Elizabeth II.

Can you imagine if he'd heard her yell "Off with his head!" at that moment?
Can I? I haven't stopped!
Queen Elizabeth was always there; she is the only British monarch in my lifetime.
No doubt many can say that, Adam.
I've been giving this some thought and now I'm very curious. Canadian money with Elizabeth's image on it is one thing, but what about the actual British Pound note and coins? What will happen to them?
After a certain period of time it'll be necessary to print new money, but with the current monarch on it, i.e. Charles!
It's going to seem strange seeing those in circulation, after a lifetime of watching Elizabeth's portrait slowly growing older as she aged in real time. Now the British public is going to have an old man on their money, who's kinda, sorta like a caricature of royalty, and not the well-respected, dignified Queen of 70 years.
I'm pretty sure they are going to pick a very serious, royal looking picture of the man. It will be fine.
I still want to call him Prince Charles!
Every Christmas, I watch the Queen's message.
This year, of course, Charles will be doing it. His first one.
Not political, but - King Charles III will be hospitalized next week, for treatment of an enlarged prostate. Which, from all reports, is benign. My guess is that he's having a procedure known as a TURP. It's a short (about 45 minutes) operation to basically shave down the enlarged prostate. I should know; I had that procedure back in the summer of 2009. One night in the hospital, and I was out. More on that here.
Kate had surgery done too.
On her prostate?
No, she had abdominal surgery.
They're not saying why, and it's really none of our business. Although a statement was released, saying that it wasn't cancer.
