Future Echos

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Red Dwarf: Red Dwarf I: Future Echos
By Johnny Veitch on Sunday, December 06, 1998 - 8:49 am:

Throughout the episode we constantly see signs with deck numbers written on the wall. They create a nit, though. The sign on the wall outside Lister and Rimmer`s quarters seems to change from reading 132 to 348. Don`t ask me how. It just looks like that. Can anyone confirm this?

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Sunday, December 06, 1998 - 12:19 pm:

Perhaps they lost the level 132 sign and replaced it with the one they had lying around somewhere, level 348. This would be about par for the couse for the Red Dwarf.

Maybe the future echoes cause number mutations?

By Chris Thomas on Tuesday, February 09, 1999 - 12:18 am:

We know where Lister's sons come from - he gets pregnant after mating with his female self and that episode refers back to this one, indicating the baby boys seen here were a result of this union.
Now in the sped-up pre-amble to Backwards it says they grow to 18 years old and are then returned to the parallel universe. If that is the case, how Lister see the future echo os his adult-looking son exploding here?

By Keith Alan Morgan on Thursday, July 08, 1999 - 4:47 am:

We see a picture of Lister's grandmother and dad, but later it will be established that he's an orphan. (Although these could be adoptive or foster parent & grandparent.)

I watched the remastered version of this and at one point, the ship shakes, Lister wonders what's going on, then we see him running down some stairs, then into the drive room where Rimmer watched Lister die. The running down the stairs looked like something from a later series and I'm guessing this was an added scene.

Some things I spotted while giving watching this:

When Rimmer has his hair "cut" by Holly there is no sound effects on the original version.

Why does Lister need to put things into stasis when they seem to have survived 3,000,000 years without a problem.

When Lister kicks the wall in the Drive Room it wobbles.

It's a bit daft that something as important as the Drive computer has to be plugged in by hand, & can't Holly get the skutters to do this.

By KAM on Thursday, November 11, 1999 - 12:53 am:

The Skutters have a better union than Lister. (according to The End)

By Chris Thomas on Thursday, November 11, 1999 - 7:35 am:

Yes, but can they survive *another* 3 million years without a problem?

By Gordon Lawyer on Monday, November 22, 1999 - 3:38 pm:

Red Dwarf must have had some severe deceleration as just a couple of minutes after seeing a future echo of 178 year old Lister, they see a future echo of Lister shortly after Jim and Bexley are born.

By Keith Alan Morgan on Tuesday, March 14, 2000 - 12:40 am:

Lister watches Rimmer talk in a future echo in the Drive Room. First, while do we only see the echo of Rimmer not Rimmer & Lister? Second, when Rimmer comes into the room real time he appears to walk a little further than he did in the future echo. (I suppose if you really wanted to do some grungy nitpicking, get two tapes of this show, two TV's & VCRs and set one tape to the beginning of the echo & one tape to the real event & run them side by side.)

By Ratbat on Thursday, August 03, 2000 - 12:38 am:

I haven't run two tapes side-by-side, but I have noticed that the future echo of Rimsy doesn't match up with what he does later at all. Never mind the timing or the walking, his arm movements are right off.

I was watching the Remastered version and while the external shots showed the stars whizzing by, the shots out of L&D's porthole only show things slowly going by. (I felt like Spornan on Voyager, "They're not even going at Warp!")

Did the death of Lister's son still happen. Or was it averted?
