Marooned

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Red Dwarf: Red Dwarf III: Marooned

What's Going To Happen In The Next Five Minutes: Holly thinks she's spotted five black holes, and the guys split up and evacuate Red Dwarf in case it's not small enough to escape the black holes' gravity. Lister and Rimmer set out in Starbug, while Kryten and Cat depart aboard Blue Midget. En route, Starbug crashes onto an icy moon, and it's unlikely to be found before the meagre supplies on board are gone. Faced with the grave choice of eating either a pot noodle or dog food to survive, Lister begins to lose hope and body heat. He asks Rimmer to sacrifice some of his worldly goods to serve as firewood - and Rimmer, naturally, refuses. Lister therefore sacrifices some of Rimmer's worldly goods anyway.
Guest Cast: none

Ascension is on Thursday, not Sunday.

"Hey dudes!"

This is my input on the semi-infamous nit from this episode about the page Lister rips out of Lolita.

For those who don't know, when Lister rips out pages of Lolita to keep the fire going, Rimmer asks him keep page 61, which he presumably rips out in the next shot.

The supposed nit is that while page 61 is on the right hand side of the book, Lister rips out a page on the left side - and this is generally thought to be page 60.

But has it ever occured to any one out there in Dwarfdom that Lister ripped out page 62, and thus page 61? Apparently no, because on all the sites about this I can find, this explanation never comes up (it isn't in the "Smeg Outs" video, either).

By Merat on Sunday, April 11, 1999 - 12:22 pm:

Well, he appears to read it first, to see if he should follow Rimmer's advice about saving it. Now, either he can read through the page or he tore out the wrong one.

By Matt Atanian on Saturday, May 08, 1999 - 10:36 pm:

Rimmer operates the radio controls when attempting to send out a distress call... how can he do this if he cannot touch anything?

By Chris Thomas on Sunday, May 09, 1999 - 8:21 am:

Maybe that's why no one responds?

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Wednesday, May 26, 1999 - 2:45 pm:

One theory- the light bee somehow connects to the comms equipment when Rimmer does this. Seems reasonable enough to me.

Also there is a much bigger nit. When Rimmer and Lister talk about losing their virginity- Lister must know that Rimmer is lying. That makes the second time he forgets about Yvonne McGruder.

By Chris Thomas on Sunday, June 06, 1999 - 6:21 am:

Rimmer checks the rations available and mentions the minty paste for ulcers which he says is "quite nice". How can he know that unless he tasted it, which he obviously can't do if he is a hologram?

By Canadian Dwarfer on Thursday, June 10, 1999 - 12:59 pm:

He was probably being sarcastic. On a similar note, why would Starbug have dog food on board? When have we ever seen anyone legally keep a pet on the Red Dwarf? (I mean of the original crew, of course)

By Chris Thomas on Friday, June 11, 1999 - 2:21 am:

As for the dog food... maybe Holly got something wrong and screwed up the food dispensers, producing dog food instead of curry or something.
Chris Barrie doesn't deliver the line about the ulcer paste sarcastically, he says it quuite encouragingly as if to almost boost Lister's spirits.

By Canadian Dwarfer on Monday, June 14, 1999 - 1:33 pm:

For Rimmer, that probably *is* sarcasm.

By Chris Thomas on Tuesday, June 15, 1999 - 3:29 am:

Possibly. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, June 15, 1999 - 10:38 am:

It's also possible that Rimmer had tasted the sutff before he died.

By Canadian Dwarfer on Wednesday, June 16, 1999 - 2:15 pm:

Boy, this guy *did* have too much time on his hands!

By Richard Davies on Saturday, July 10, 1999 - 4:43 pm:

Bonjella (Sic) oral ointment is fairly common household item in late 20th century England, & presumibly is still available in a few hundred years time. (Like Pot Noodles & after 8 mints & Shake & Vac) Also Dog Food is standard Russian army emergncy rations, & presumibly the Space Corps use it as backup rations.

By Keith Alan Morgan on Thursday, July 29, 1999 - 1:43 am:

Lovely. 8-p

I beleive the Smeg Ups tape suggested that Lister had Lolita upside-down. (So I guess he smiled because he was looking up her dress.)

Rimmer is telling Lister of the various foods he was able to find inside various places. Since Rimmer is a hologram how did he open the cabinets, lockers and boxes? Did he just stick his head through the doors and looked around? And if he did how did the hologram get projected inside a cabinet, locker or box?

Was that Boba Fett's helmet inside the locker that Lister hides his guitar in?

Why would Kryten need to wear ear muffs?

While this episode has some very funny lines (Holly about not seeing black holes, why dogs lick their testicles, etc.) this isn't one of my favorite stories. Too dull with the attempted dramatics. It could be stuck in Series VII and no one would notice.

By Chris Thomas on Saturday, February 05, 2000 - 9:49 pm:

I know someone who got approval from Grant Naylor productions to adapt this for an amateur theatre production. The only restriction was that he couldn't use the Red Dwarf logo and so on. He removed Cat and Kryten from the script and did it almost as two-hander character piece (Holly did appear as well, apparently)

By Wes Collins on Wednesday, August 02, 2000 - 3:54 pm:

If some dialogue was added, this show, which is my favorite btw, could pass as a radio play. The other night, my mom taped it on PBS, but because of some screw up at the cable compnay, the picture is filled with snow untill the end. I actually got more out of it by not seeing it, than when i did see it.

By Padawan on Sunday, June 03, 2001 - 2:51 pm:

Sadly, people losing their virginity at 12 is pretty much the norm these days.

By Merat on Sunday, June 03, 2001 - 3:27 pm:

Wes, I've recorded the shows to audiotape so I can have something to listen to while driving. :)

By Wes Collins (Wcollins) on Monday, June 04, 2001 - 7:03 pm:

Cool. Sounds like a good idea to me!
(Scrambles for tapes)

By Richard Davies on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 3:27 am:

The Novels have been adapted to talking books, which were then broadcast. I've done an audio recording of Backwards, mainly so I could play the backward voices better.

By Padawan on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 9:31 am:

Hmm, no-one answered my semi-on-topic post.

By Padawan Observer from Dec 2003, answering a post I made two and a half years ago on Sunday, December 28, 2003 - 6:25 am:

Probably because it was wildly innacurate, my dear past self.

By Richard Davies on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 3:33 pm:

One of the outakes on the DVD is a clip where Lister & Rimmer are discussing why Lister can't turn the snow into water & drink it, & Chris Barrie slips up on a line about the water content of the snow. A blooper free version of this line isn't in the collection of unused clips which suggests the scene was abandoned before recording a mistake free take or the original tape has been lost, the omitted scene from Bodyswap when Kryten was supposed to light a candle with his finger.

Why was there a can of dog food on Starbug?

Red Dwarf had a no pets policy.

By Natalie Granada Television (Natalie_granada_tv) on Saturday, January 11, 2020 - 11:51 pm:

Rimmer has The Complete Works of Shakespeare, but he didn't know Shakespeare's first name in Waiting For God.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, January 12, 2020 - 5:36 am:

Dog food is standard emergency rations in the Soviet/Russian army.

Yes, but this is a ship that was build a couple of hundred years later. Hardly the same thing.

And don't forget that Red Dwarf was originally never meant to leave the Solar System, so any such rations would hardly be needed.

By Natalie Granada Television (Natalie_granada_tv) on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 - 3:13 pm:

This is proper sitcom - two people who don't like each other, trapped in a room.

They did it again in RD V's "Quarantine":

"And don't say we're going to get through this!"

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, January 16, 2020 - 5:35 am:

And all because Holly couldn't tell black holds from grit.

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Thursday, January 16, 2020 - 7:42 pm:

Was that black holds or black holes?

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, January 17, 2020 - 5:16 am:

Black holes.

By Natalie Granada Television (Natalie_granada_tv) on Saturday, February 22, 2020 - 3:21 am:

{Lister's girlfriend Michelle Fisher was *beautiful* enough to get a job behind the perfume counter, but was she also vicious enough? I mean, that killer ability to leap out and spray customers with perfume as they pass the counter...

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, February 22, 2020 - 5:23 am:

Rimmer was blown away when Lister told him that story.
