This is probably the first episode where the existance of the light bee mentioned on the "Paranoia and Confidence" board is demonstrated, as Rimmer is able to leave the ship. One thing I find curious was the scene where Rimmer was trying to learn Esperanto. Lister seems to know it quite well, though he doesn't really strike me as the sort of person who would bother to learn a second language, particularly one as useless as Esperanto (or does it finally come into common use in the future?)
It's in reasonable common use in the future that's why you see Level Nivelo written on the walls over the ship. One is English and the other is the word Level in Esperanto.
Lister probably just picked it up as he went along and didn't study it and found he learnt it with ease which, of course, would have infuriated Rimmer.
Do the Level/Nivelo signs only appear in the 'new' (with all the CGI stuff) versions or were they in the originals?
They are in the original. BTW Chris, thanks for the info. I never understood what "Nivelo" meant. I just assumed it was some sort of code name, not Esperanto.
Rimmer was using "Learn while you sleep" tapes, but what makes it funny is that Lister learned everything while Rimmer learned nothing.
I thought "Nivelo" was the name for a particular level (like corridor 159 is known as "white" corridor" and so I was going to send in a nit: In one episode Level Nivelo is 326, in one it`s 132, in one it`s 529.... then I found out it meant "Level" on another website.

Another reference to nonexistant parents. Lister says that Kryten sounds like his mother.
Trivia Note: Lister refers to Kryten as a Gwenlyn. In an interview it was revealed that a producer named Gwenlyn turned down Red Dwarf and this was Grant & Naylor's revenge, making his name a derisive term.
At the beginning Kryten says something like they are realizing that there is nobody else out there, but all through Series One the opening said that Dave is the last human being. So haven't they already discovered there is nobody else out there?

I love the Androids soap where they all have Australian accents and theme tune is very similar to the Aussie soap Neighbours. The producer's name looks like Karen Gwelyn at the end.

On Androids, the female android says to the male that Bryce (?) is not his android. Implying that androids reproduce the same way as humans.
IMHO, this is just a soap opera taking dramatic licenense. Kinda like Sci-Fi shows where a male engineer has a baby. (Red Dwarf, Enterprise, etc.)
Hasn't Esperanto now been abandoned altogether?
Why would he even need Esperanto? Who could he possibly speak to? Aliens wouldn't use and humans are presumed dead.
I suppose it bugs Rimmer that Lister can speak Esperanto and he can't. He's merly doing it so he can feel superior over Lister.
This Kryten was very different from the one that later became part of the crew (same character, different actor).

They found Kryten all smashed up on an asteroid some time after the events of this episode. They hardly had the competence to rebuild him close to what he was, they did their best but mistakes obviously krept in.
Yes, that was explained in the Star Wars like scroll at the start of Season Three.
