I visited www.play247.com and I saw that on November the 4th Season 1 of Red Dwarf is due out for £14.99 in Region 2. Special Features are yet to be confirmed.
Well I have the Season 1 DVD and must admit that I'm impressed with the presentation. The menus are decent, encompassing the drive room and the episodes are presented with subtitles and in their original format, NOT the CGI remasters which I'm sure will please many fans.
The six episodes are presented as they were. Extras are extensive, anc consist of a commentary on "The End". Two clips from the Audiobook "Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers", Musical highlights from season one, raw model footage, a stills gallery, a featurette on the making of Red Dwarf, outtakes, the Japanese edition of "The End" (very strange to hear Lister and co dubbed), and one of the most interesting parts, deleted scenes.
Is it avalable in Region 1 (ie The US and Canada).
It will be in Feb 2003
I would have quite liked to have seen the DVD with the US Pilot instead of the Japanese dub myself. Tis my only grumble with the DVD so far....maybe they'll put that on the Season3 DVD what with Robert joining the cast at that point.
I'm pleased that the BBC seem to have put some thought into this disc. The start of a continuous design on the spine a la UK's Farscape indicates that they are going to release further seasons.
Of course, if the sales of this bomb (unlikely) they might not bother, but I think there will be enough demand, especially considering that VHS videos of Red Dwarf haven't been easily available for some time, even the CGI 'enhanced' ones.
I got my Dwarf DVDs yesterday, and I could not be happier with them. Only had the chance to watch a few episodes, but the sound and picture are great! Looking forward to what looks like some great extras!! It's packed! The menues are really cool too!! Glad to see it's a quality product. The only bummer is that they are only releasing 2 seasons a year.
The Season 2 DVD was just as well presented. The BBC has really put some thought into this which is very good. Too often TV shows on DVD are released with a bare minimum. The early releases of Stargate SG-1 were guilty of that, but Red Dwarf has enough material to back it up.
The RD1 DVD is great! I've enjoyed seeing the deleted sections in full for the first time (A clip from the funeral scene is on the Smeg Outs tape). The End dubbed into Japanese is very amusing, but it would help if there were some English subtitles, even though I know the lines fairly well.
Though only releasing two seasons a year is a bit tight. Maybe the BBC will rethink this policy depending on the sales of the first two seasons.
In contrast shows like the Star Trek TNG and DS9 seasons are coming out quickly.
Season 3 of Red Dwarf is available on DVD in Region 2 now.
Has anyone had trouble moving the cursor around the officer's quarters on the 2nd disc? With my Cyberhome ADL 528 DVD player I have to stop & start the disc each time I want the cursor to move. A PS2 I borrowing seems to cope OK though.
I've not had that problem. Certain players seem to sometimes have problems with certain discs. My Samsung 807 won't load disc 2 of Fellowship of the Ring or Two Towers Extended Editions, but my PS2 will.
Any news on a Red Dwarf IV DVD? Also will either of the American pilots ever be an extra? or are the rights too difficult to use them?
According to the BBC website it should be out 16th February.
Thanks Edwin, it will be out at just the right time for a birthday present for me!
Red Dwarf IV is out, and as has been the case for the previous series, the presentation is excellent.
It's one of the few series along with Spaced and Futurama that I am genuinely interested in the commentaries.
Spaced has a commentary???!!!!
Spaced has commentaries from the main cast members (Simon and Jessica) as well as two or three others in each episode, usually this rotates between the actors/actresses that play Marsha, Mike, Brian etc.
This applies to both series.
Series V is out in DVD. Again the comentaries are good, but unfortunately Craig Charles wasn't available due to unforseen circumstances, still we get Robert Llewelleyn (sp?), Hatty Hayridge, Danny John-Jules and Chris Barrie.
Apparently there's footage of the US pilot on the 2nd disc which I haven't managed to get yet. Some UK shops are selling a special edition which includes a Corgi model of a Starbug. These models are available seperately along with the Red Dwarf, unfortunately it's the CGI version. A boxed set with both ships and two figures (either Lister and Rimmer or Cat and Kryten is also available).
Series VI was released this week. I think the '2 seasons a year' seems to have been slightly sped up. I haven't had the chance yet to check out the special features, but according to the booklet with the DVD we have full cast. Craig Charles was apparently ill when the commentaries for Series V were being done.
I think if any DVD season was going to have the US pilot in full it would have been Season V as that was roundabout the time it was filmed.
The RD5 DVD has a feature on the American pilots but mentions that they couldn't get the rights to include them in full. There's plenty of clip though.
I haven't yet managed to check out the features disk on either Season 5 or 6 yet.
Good lord...has anyone else watched the extras on the Season7 DVD?
Craig Charles is clearly channeling David Hasselhoff in the Extra about making the series.
This thread had an Artifact Title (it was started in 2002, after all).
Thus I've retitled it.
