The Return of the Short Red One

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Red Dwarf: The Dwarfer's Sink: The Return of the Short Red One

Red Dwarf returns! Sort-of, anyway. We are getting two new, honest-to-Cloister, real episodes of Red Dwarf, a making-of special, and what they are calling "a clip show with a serious difference". If this does well, it could pave the way for more Red Dwarf TV specials. WHEN this does well.

The boys from the Dwarf are back!

Hmmm....the cash cow not milked enough?

Don't get me wrong, I love Red Dwarf but the cast has surely moved on by now? And I can't see a clip show being a huge rater.

By Merat (Merat) on Thursday, September 25, 2008 - 6:23 am:

Actually, the cast has been trying to make the movie for the last ten years. They've gotten to the pre-production stage twice and have actually started production once. Then their backer turned out to be a con artist. That's one of the things the making-of special will cover. I've read some transcripts of them talking about the insanity that's gone on with that and it'll be interesting to see what they say when this goes to this forum.

As for the clip show, it doesn't seem to be your traditional clip show. For one thing, they are refusing to talk about it

So is it just the clip show or the clip show + two new episodes of Red Dwarf?

By Merat on Thursday, September 25, 2008 - 7:04 pm:

Its the clip show, the making of, and two episodes of Red Dwarf.

I just hope we find out what happened to the crew. I hate cliff-hangers that are left unresolved. Also I miss the holograhic Rimmer. He was the original Doctor (ST-Voy). Too bad he seemingly escaped Death.

By Matt Atanian (Matanian) on Sunday, October 05, 2008 - 6:16 pm:

Maybe Death will catch up with him and he'll be made into a hologram once more?

Anyways, I agree that they NEED to resolve the cliffhanger. Then they need to never do a cliffhanger season ender again! First they wrote themselves into such a big corner that they decided to just ignore it inbetween Series II and III, then they left us hanging for such a long time after Series VI. The Series VII cliffhanger didn't leave us for too long, but now there's been this eternal wait after Series VIII.

No more cliffhangers, ever!

There was supposed to be an episode in RDIII having Lister come to terms with being a Dad, but Grant Naylor found it was becoming to hard to develop into a full script.

Yes, I know... And of the three annoying cliffhangers I mentioned, that was the least annoying. After all, that's what slow-motion is for. ^_^

Of course, what we got was the Back To Earth storyline.

Also, they later said in a Smegazine interview that they realised that there was no way they could make the script not sexist towards pregnant women and mothers.

Wise choice to drop it then.

New documentary series called "Red Dwarf: The First Three Million Years" airs on the Dave channel in the UK, starting on Thursday 6th August at 9 a.m.

I'll have to try and track that documentary down.
