That is .... awsome!
I agree.
if Big Finish got the Red Dwarf audio licence...
Rimmer meets the Valeyard!
The Two Kochanskis team up with River Song and Missy!
Original David Ross Kryten vs Talkie Toaster!
I imagine rights issues would get in the way, but it is a fun idea though.
Doug Naylor has confirmed we are getting a RD stage show.
How's that dead horse flogging going?
Yeah. You might have a point there that the cast are getting close in age to the proverbial Red Dwarf XIV: So Very Tired
Red Dwarf On Ice?
Red Dwarf: The Animated Series?
Red Dwarf: The Next Generation?
As long as the actors want to keep doing it, I have no problem here.
Robert Llewellyn is reportedly understandably wearing of hours of being encased in latex now that he's nearly 70. He was 33 when he was first cast as Kryten.
If need be, they can find a way around this (like making Kryten human).
They tried that once. He didn't like it.
Whoops, that's right!
RD doesn't have the ability to extend itself in the way DW can. Lister and the Cat are not immortal, Kryten will wear out and Rimmer's computer simulation program will develop bad sectors and fail.
Craig Charles had a heart attack, Bobby Llew has been in hospital for a serious illness. I wouldn't judge them if they and Chris and Danny decided to call it a day.
If they decide to retire, I'm fine with that.
But, as long as they're willing to keep making RD, that's fine with me too.
Compromise: Big Finish do Red Dwarf, but only spin-offs. Such as
* The Erotic Adventures of Ace Rimmer
* Talkin’ Toast with Talkie Toaster
* Young Lister
* Cats: The Quest For Fuchal
* The Snacky Chronicles
I actually wouldn't mind a spin-off series set in the totalitarian reality of series 5's "Back to Reality". Life as a citzen under Col. Sebastian Doyle and trying to avoid him "changing" you from being an alive person to being a dead person.
Once again, those pesky rights issues are in the way.
interesting to contemplate though. I think audios in the style of the RD books rather than in the style of the show would work better.
Well, if the actors get to the point where they feel they're too old to do the shows, they can always pursue this option.
The Dave Documentary, someone tell the person who did the subtitles there is no character called Creighton!
Case of Critical Research Failure here.
I was just reading people's comments about the documentary on GallyB before I came here.
There seems to be a terrible echo here in Nitcentral.
Thanks for bringing this matter to my attention, Callie.
I've taken care of it.
Lister thinks 1:30 in the afternoon is too early to wake up for class ("You can still taste the tooth paste").
He's a lot like Ferris Bueller and just like Bueller, Lister was likely allowed to finish school just so his adults could watch him then perish in the real world
Well, if that was the case, they got their wish. They no doubt think that Lister perished on Red Dwarf when the reactors went.
In fact, one has to wonder, did any of the families of the crew sue the Jupiter Mining Corporation for wrongful deaths. They could argue that JMC was negligent in putting people on a ship where the reactor were not up to snuff.
Lister is meant by Grant Naylor to be played like Reverend Jim from "Taxi" as played by Christopher "Doc Brown" Lloyd.
In other words, his brains are fried.
Let's remember that the last time Lister tried to order a curry, they accidentally changed the course of history and got stuck in a deserted America in the 1960s
Lister is meant by Grant Naylor
You do realize that "Grant Naylor" are two different people, right?
Rob Grant and Doug Naylor.
'Grant Naylor' was the collective pseudonym they sometimes used - in fact, I can look across at my bookshelf and see my omnibus edition of 'Red Dwarf' and 'Better Than Life' which shows the author as 'Grant Naylor'
And opening it, I can quote from the first page: "Grant Naylor is a gestalt entity occupying two bodies.." And then goes on to joke about living in different places with different wives (for tax purposes) and sharing one mind.
Looking at the wikipedia entry, I just learned they also wrote the lyrics for Spitting Images 'Chicken Song'! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grant_Naylor
I have those same two books
TV Tropes needs to update their facts in regards to RD.
They still have the Cat listed as the last of his race. Well, we know that is no longer the case, in regards to Promised Land.
I had a weird dream last night in which the Inquisitor from Red Dwarf V had the personality and voice of Judge Judy.
Feels appropriate.
How about Lister played by Pee Wee Herman?
Craig Charles is fine enough, thank you.
from my own post on Ganymede & Titan's jokey "idea for an episode" thread:
AWAY IN A DANGER
The crew meet Austin Danger Powers. Lister punches him in the face as “he is really starting to get on my keks”.
But there's those pesky rights issues in the way again.
Roobarb:
quote:I can't recall the exact timeframe, but I remember reading about a proposed Red Dwarf Christmas Special in 1994. At the time, I was very curious to see what the approach to such a production would have been like since, presumably, it would have had to address the Series VI cliffhanger. If I were to guess, I suspect that the idea for such a special was driven by BBC2 rather than Grant Naylor.
It was around late 1993/early 1994 when Rob and Doug started splitting up as a writing team - the Last Human novel was originally solicited as being jointly written by both of them and to be published in October 1993, but that never happened.
With the Grant/Naylor split in particular, plus contemporary events surrounding Craig Charles, I'd imagine any mooted plans for a 1994 Christmas Special were simply not a realistically viable option by Autumn 1994.
Which no doubt delayed the return of the show.
Since then, Doug Naylor has been in charge.
Wonder if the AR suite games are as ethical as ours, ie would you get to experience terror bombing and such in the WW2 simulation game Kryten borrows the tank from?
They might have safety protocols, like the holodecks of Trek.
