Krytie TV

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Red Dwarf: Red Dwarf VIII: Krytie TV
By Mike Konczewski on Monday, March 08, 1999 - 7:43 am:

I won't do a summary, in deference of my British friends. However, I will warn you my nit comments might be spoilers for you.

When Kryten is interviewing Lister after pulling the prank on him, both Lister and Kryten are on screen. Previously, the view was established as coming from Kryten's optical sensors (we only saw him in reflections). So where's this viewpoint coming from? (they're in a corridor; no mirrors)

Kryten was classified as a female because he doesn't have (in his words) "a meat and two veg." He doesn't have any of the other bits, either, if you know what I mean. Are the Red Dwarf staff that dense that they don't realize he's neither sex?

The Pay-Per-View movie of the showers was supposed to have lasted 3 hours, and was broadcast live. Did the women prisoners actually take a 3-hour shower? (I will admit; it was a hilarious scene)

Just because the Brits haven't seen the episode is no reason not to have a plot summary! Anyone who reads these nits before they see the episode deserves to have the surprises spoiled!
WARNING! BRIEF PLOT SUMMARY FOLLOWS! TURN AROUND NOW! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Basically when the men find out that Kryten showers with the women, some men jump him and reprogram him to film the shower for a pay-per-view event. The women find out and Kryten is reclassified as a man. (Temporarily, see next episode.) Kryten tells Lister that Kochanski has begun dating her old boyfriend and convinces Lister to mess up the man's quarters so he looks like a slob. In actuality it was a televised practical joke for Krytie TV and the quarters belong to the warden who has a hot date and Lister has to scurry like mad to clean everything up. Also Lister gets his guitar back and there is a chance for a pardon.
NITS
How can a bunch of convicts reprogram Kryten? He's future technology. If they can reprogram him, why not the ship's computer?
Also there is a line that the women supposedly reprogrammed him back. Why doesn't Lister realize that's a lie? (Well, maybe Kochanski could do it.)
What exactly are 'barrouckas'? (Not certain of spelling.)
Mike: In an earlier episode it is explained that a prisoner has to be classified as a man or a woman so they know where to put them. It is unlikely that they have prisoner quarters for none of the above.
The 3 hour shower can be explained by saying that there are a lot of female prisoners, but in one of the Back In The Red episodes it is mentioned that there are only 200 quarters, so are there enough women to fill up the showers for 3 hours?

I have a nit. It is: At the begining why was Rimmer so annoyed about Lister getting his guitar when he knows that guitar strings aren`t allowed? Was he just acting like that because he didn`t want to spoil the surprise?!

I can't believe no one has replaced my badly written plot summary with a Real Plot Summary. Also the last line of my summary is wrong, there was NO chance for a pardon.

When talking about Lister's songs Lister says, "What about the Ohm song?"
I think the first time Rimmer heard the Ohm song was in Timeslides. That Rimmer asked for a copy of the song, indicating that he had never heard it before.

Well, I think I've figured out why Killcrazy is so kill crazy. He admits that he's never seen a naked woman. He's just channeling his sexual frustration.

When Krytie TV is first broadcast we see guys wearing Krytie TV shirts and carrying buckets with Krytie TV on them. Do the guards just not pay attention or were they in on it at the beginning?

They say Kochanski has gotten back with her old boyfriend Tim. Well, actually her old boyfriend Tim was from a parallel dimension, and this dimension's Tim dated this dimension's Kochanski.

Apparently Kryten had a camera in the warden's quarters to broadcast Lister messing up the room, and apparently this camera was not removed. So is the rest of that evening's entertainment going to be watching the warden on a date?

Lister gets his guitar and no strings. Then the guard hands him notification of his appeal.
Boy, that's courtious. Most organizations would wait for the prisoner to file an appeal before sending him notification.

By Keith Alan Morgan on Sunday, December 05, 1999 - 4:27 am:

Lister says to Kryten that Killcrazy reprogrammed him, but earlier, during the pay-per-view event, Killcrazy wonders why Kryten is looking at a crack in the shower floor, then other convicts come in and collect money.

Wy do none of the regulars ask to spend their sentences in stasis, this way it will seem like no time at all, or did the nanobots not recreate these? (RD8 would be very short if this happened!)

By Urac Daria Sigma on Tuesday, December 14, 1999 - 3:26 pm:

Why is it that the men's prison seems to run on the model of 'hard-as-nails place, don't look at anyone funny, or you're dead' model, whereas the women's prison seems to run on the '1920s public school' model?

And this one isn't really a nit, but seperate whole prisons for the boys and girls doesn't realyl seem the 'RED DWARF' way. Actually...even real-like practical concerns seem to be out the window when you realise that the populations of the two prisons are interacting all the time!

Blimey, I knew my nits I just put in Back in the Red sounded familiar...I already put them here... oy....

By Merat on Friday, January 17, 2003 - 5:10 pm:

Killcrazy is most likely not a skilled computer programmer, especially when it comes to future technology. He probably tried to reprogram Kryten to film the women but accidently also made him want to earn money.

This was a strange one.
