I did not agree with Ricky spanking his wife. I did not find it humorous so I would have to say it was bad humor. The same with the Honeymooners where Ralph joked about beating his wife.
Remember the era people, it was the '50s. It was acceptable back then.
Sorry, I'm younger. Was it really acceptable? I remember my grandma always flinches when she sees those scenes and says when she saw them originally her whole family thought they were really silly.
On the same token back then it was also funny to show a man being bashed in the head with a rolling pin or a frying pan by his wife.
It still is, when it's done in the manner that they did it.
What?
Matthew, you gots some splainin' to do!
i think it was funny when ricky spanked lucy!!most of the time she deserved it!!
To be exact, there were four episodes where Ricky gave Lucy a spanking. "Lucy Plays Cupid episode #15"; "The Ricardos Change Apartments episode # 61"; "Ricky's Life Story episode # 65" and "Ricky Loses His Temper episode # 85". And yes, I thought all four of these spanking scenes were extremely funny and all VERY well deserved. And as someone pointed out, that was a time of extreme slapstick of all types including women hitting men with frying pans. One reason there aren't any classic shows equal to I Love Lucy today is because everyone is afraid to do wild and funny slapstick. Anyway, Ricky spanking Lucy, was just funny humor, along with many other physical gags of the show.
Although I have not recently seen the three other episodes that had spanking in it, I did see "Lucy Plays Cupid." I cannot believe that you [Ben]believe Lucy deserved getting spanked. The reason he was spanking her was because she was going to deliver a note to someone as requested by another. She was the middleman but only due to someone's request for her to do so. It was completely inappropriate for her to be spanked for this reason. I understand that in the 1950s it could be seen as funny, but I certainly do not find it funny today.
Yeah, spanking your wife is still sexism and domestic violence...
