Will be repeated, along with the second part, on Dec. 15.
I wonder why we haven't seen the guy whose legs were severed since this episode? Not even so much as a reference to him. How such a man copes with being on the island might make an interesting character arc.
Were they severed, or just injured?
They were gone. Below the knees.
I haven't seen any of Lost, but I imagine a man with that injury would die quite rapidly without proper medical care.
Mayeb not die but would be most likely very messed up. Although during the civil war amputation was the most common treatment for severe combat wounds a lot of soldiers didn't die.
With minimal levels of care, ie washign the wound, oddly enough letting maggots eat the dead flesh, and making sure the guy gets enouhg food and water he might live. The odds are rather slim but still reasonably good.
Saw this again last night, I thought Jack said he had removed the tourniquet and that he was going to make it. He couldn't have removed the tourniquet if he had lost his legs, was this a different passenger?
In the plane with the pilot, Jack reaches over with his left arm to haul Kate up to the cockpit, he stretches quite far to do it, wouldn't this movement have placed a lot of strain on his wound causing it bleed again?
How did you see it last night?
Same way I did, I imagine - on British telly where it finally premiered last night.
Was that Greg Weiss from Alias as the pilot?
All the time the giant whateveritis was prowling around the plane, I kept yelling to the three of them in the cockpit, "Will you stop trying to see out the windows?! You should be hiding, not drawing attention to yourselves!" And my theory was proven when the pilot got snatched out!
Did the British episode get cut at all? Was there really no shot of the pilot - or whatever was left of him - up in the trees?
An intriguing start to the series.
Yes, I did see on Channel 4 (British channel) it'll be repeated on E4 next week so I'll watch out for the legs. We're nearly at the end of Season 1 on the Irish channel.
That was Greg Weiss, also, apparently Lost and Alias exist in the same 'universe', Luigi noted that Sydney was listening to Driveshaft on her radio in a S4 episode.
I do believe there was an overhead shot of the pilot in the Irish ep but I can't be sure.
Yes, it was a good start, I was hooked from the first episode. I'm glad it's on C4, I missed episodes 5 and 6 when I was on holidays.
Jack has two small bottles of alcohol in his jacket pocket, which certainly are very handy for dressing his wound, but... since he stashed them during the flight before any sign of trouble, he's either
prescient (can foresee the future)
or has an alcohol problem (which is a bit surprising, giving what later ep.s reveal about his and his father's background.)
Just watched the DVD.
I thought the guy only lost one leg.
Jack must have a lot of faith in Kate's sewing ability to do the kind of effort/climbing he did in the cockpit section. I recently had a small growth removed from my back ... all of four stitches. And the doctor wanted me not to work my back for two weeks (no softball/throwing etc...). And here's Jack, climbing all over the place. I couldn't tell if he was using his right arm or his left arm (his injury was on his left).
I'm not sure that the engines should still be going full bore... weren't they detached?
This is weird. I just saw the scene with the guy Jack, Locke and the other guy pulled out from under the wreckage, and I didn't see even one leg severed, but just one leg with a lot of blood on the pant lag. Thinking I missed it, I viewed the scene again on my tape it, and sure enough, there's no severed leg. Funny how memory plays tricks on you like that.
Wasn't it later that his leg(s) were severed? Or was that the marshall? I thought I remembered Jack and the others jury-rigging a guillotine to do the job. Of course, I could be wrong. I'll check out the first season DVD set from the library this weekend and look again.
As far as I know (and I recently viewed my tapes of the entire series), the guy they pulled out from under there was never seen again, and the Marshall had shrapnel in his ribs, but no severed limbs.
I do remember Locke's wheelchair showing up in an episode, and how it was later revealed to be his. What did they use it for?
They used Locke's wheelchair to move debris and other things around on the beach. I believe it was in Locke's first episode, "Walkabout." I think it was Charlie and Claire who used it.

That was someone else (won't say who as it is a spoiler) Jack jury-rigged a guillotine from (what looked like) one of the luggage compartments. It was in one of the last few episodes of Season 1.
Actuallt its a cargo pod more like a D container. I used to work for ABXair now DHL.

Sounds like it did.
Who was the guy who came out of the toilet in the cockpit section?
