After Jack gets trapped in a cave-in, it's up to Charlie, haunted by his memories of his band and drug addiction, to rescue him. Meanwhile, Sayid devises a plan to triangulate the position of the French transmission.

Charlie backstory.

Notes:
-Unanswered questions: Who knocked Sayid out and why? How did they survive the plane crash?
By Dan Gunther on Wednesday, November 03, 2004 - 9:59 pm:

Wow, I really didn't think Sawyer would actually fire off the rocket and activate the signal in time! Good to see that he's not a TOTAL arse!

Under the category of things I never saw coming: Sayid being hit over the head by... someone... hmm, wonder what happened there?

Oh, and anyone else think the moth metaphor was poured on pretty thick? I mean, breaking out of the cave (cocoon)... it was good, just a little too "Here's the metaphor, people, the METAPHOR! DON'T MISS IT!!!"

All in all though, Lost is shaping up to be a pretty compelling hour of television on a consistent basis. Very enjoyable!

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, November 04, 2004 - 2:53 am:

PLEASE someone tell me they have a tape of this episode that they can mail to me! (My messed up my VCR program). I'll pay for postage and return to ya, too. :)

By Gordon Lawyer on Thursday, November 04, 2004 - 6:31 am:

They'll be having an encore on Saturday.

By Dan Gunther on Thursday, November 04, 2004 - 9:25 am:

Ooh, sorry Luigi, didn't tape it...

By Rona on Thursday, November 04, 2004 - 9:49 am:

Jack asks Charlie if he's had any hallucinations from his drug withdrawal right before he 'sees' a moth in the cave. This viewer was left with the impression that the cave moth was only a hallucination (which tied into the notion that the struggle strengthens the individual). Although I'm not familiar with drugs, wasn't Charlie's withdrawal a bit easy?
Locke seems to be becoming a sort of mystical figure. We never did learn just what he saw when he looked into the 'eye' of the island. Will his knowledge place him in conflict with Jack's leadership in future episodes?

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, November 04, 2004 - 11:10 am:

When on Saturday? My TV Guide has The Rookie from 8pm - 11pm.

By MrPorter on Thursday, November 04, 2004 - 11:29 am:

Luigi-

This schedule has two eps being aired on Saturday night, with The Moth at 9pm. It was also mentioned during the broadcast last night, probably as a last minute change.

I do have a tape if you really need it, though, but you should be able to catch it on Saturday.

By Josh M on Thursday, November 04, 2004 - 12:42 pm:

TVGuide.com also has Lost listed at 8 and 9 PM EST on Saturday.

This is good since I usually miss the last ten minutes of the episodes.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, November 04, 2004 - 5:59 pm:

You mean a last minute change from the showing of The Rookie? I hope so. Of course, if you have that tape, and you'll be in NYC tomorrow (you mentioned that you work there, IIRC), and you don't mind my picking it up, I would appreciate it, just in case. If you have an email via which I could contact you, let me know. One of mine is nightscreamnovi1972@yahoo.com. :)

By MrPorter on Friday, November 05, 2004 - 9:37 am:

Luigi- I just now saw your last post and sent an e-mail. Don't read the rest of this post, BTW.

About this ep-

"Here's the metaphor, people, the METAPHOR! DON'T MISS IT!!!" - Dan Gunther

Got that right! It was about as subtle as a 2x4 to the head (see: Sayid). Locke sure seems to be enjoying his role as Charlie's Yoda,... that and killing stuff. Pretty convenient that that coccoon was just where he needed it to be. Actually, if the writers had just left it at that it would've been fine but, yeah, the cave stuff was way over the top. I also thought the scene with the drugs and the fire was telegraphed too early in the ep.

Jack's looking at Kate's mug shots...that's kind of interesting to me. It's as though he knows that there is a bit of a bond there but something inside him is preventing him from taking it any further because she's trouble. Listen to that voice, dude...

Re: Charlie's backstory- now it is clear why nobody (but Locke) has recognized him; Driveshaft has been defunct for what looks like years. One of the elements of the story didn't make as much sense, though. His descent into addiction seemed too sudden and out of character. Maybe some scenes were cut.

By LUIGI NOVI on Saturday, November 06, 2004 - 8:48 pm:

I dunno, I really liked the Moth metaphor, and Locke's musings on how struggle makes one strong. When they first showed him in the confessional, I immediately wondered if they were just arbitrarily making him Catholic just because he was Irish, but after seeing how they contrasted him with his disrespectful brother, it showed that he actually cared about his faith, and how this led to his conflict with his lifestyle. I really liked how tortured Charlie was shown to be in both the flashbacks and the current story, and his reaction to seeing the moth flying up into the sky in the closing shot was just perfect. But yeah, we all knew what Charlie would say the third time to Locke all along. I don't think that could've been avoided.

I don't think his addiction was sudden. I think they showed how gradual it was, from when the band first got signed, to when they got big, and how Charlie's resentment over his brother's hogging the limelight left him with the feeling that he didn't have anything.

Sayid says he can find the signal if it's originating from inside the triangle. But what if it's not? If they were going to make the triangle big enough to make it certain that the signal was in it, then just how long did it take them to walk to those three separate points? It was still light out when they fired their rockets.

Was I the only one who assumed when Boone gave his task to Shannon that she would mess it up? I was surprised that that didn't happen.

Is there any doubt that it was Sawyere who cold-cocked Sayid at the end of the second-to-last Act? THAT was a big surprise. I actually thought the ep was over when that happened, only to see after the commercials that there was another Act. Certainly that is the assumption, especially after (Possible Spoiler Warning) seeing the trailer for next week (End Spoiler Warning), since Sawyer is the one person (possibly aside from Locke) who might have a motive for not wanting to get off the island, and was the only one who knew where Sayid was, and was close enough to get him. But if it was Sawyer, then how did he fire his rocket and get to Sayid in time? And besdies, finding the signal won't necessarily lead to a rescue, will it? So far, Abrams has done a mostly great job of not giving us what we were expecting, so here's hoping it turns out to be someone other than Sawyer. It couldn't have been Locke, since Locke was spending the day preparing that pig and was by the caves.

By Dan Gunther on Saturday, November 06, 2004 - 9:01 pm:

Luigi Novi: Was I the only one who assumed when Boone gave his task to Shannon that she would mess it up? I was surprised that that didn't happen.

Dan Gunther: Certainly not! I definitely thought she'd mess it up too. I thought she wouldn't see the other flare because she was talking to that guy, or that she would see it, and simply not care. I was really surprised when she actually fulfilled her obligation. I guess I was just more surprised that Sawyer's went off, so much so that I forgot to mention Shannon. :)

Luigi Novi: Was I the only one who assumed when Boone gave his task to Shannon that she would mess it up? I was surprised that that didn't happen.
Yeah, I was wondering whether she would be able to pull it off. But she did, good for her.

Luigi Novi: Is there any doubt that it was Sawyere who cold-cocked Sayid at the end of the second-to-last Act?...But if it was Sawyer, then how did he fire his rocket and get to Sayid in time?
That's what I thought too. Personally, I don't think it was Sawyer. I think that that might be too obvious. Hopefully we find out next week.

By Influx on Monday, November 08, 2004 - 7:46 am:

Don't moths usually fly toward the strongest light source? I would have expected it to be fluttering around the lamp rather than a dark hole. But I like the hallucination idea -- did the doc see it?

I wonder if they show Charlie with his hood up so often because it makes him look more hobbit-like. :)

I really, really like this show.

By Rona on Tuesday, November 09, 2004 - 6:27 pm:

Luigi, my local tv guide always shows a movie on ABC Saturday night. But for the last few weeks, Lost and Desperate Housewives have been shown instead. I read that ABC is getting enormous ratings showing these reruns instead. I hope they keep showing the reruns on Saturdays, it's always nice to have a backup if I miss an episode on Wednsday.

By Doug B. on Tuesday, November 09, 2004 - 7:23 pm:

I don't know that it was Sawyer who clocked Sayid. After all, I would think he was kinda busy setting up the other signal, with the fireworks and the turning it on and everything.

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, November 09, 2004 - 7:56 pm:

Yes, Rona, they showed the rerun, and not The Rookie, and advertised the first Harry Potter movie for this coming Saturday. But thanks to Mr. Porter anyway. :)

By MrPorter on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 9:41 am:

No problem, Luigi. I usually tape the eps so that I can watch them later that night- the half-pints go to bed around 8 to 8:30pm so rather than coming in late I just watch the tape after 9. I'll make a point not to rerecord over them for a week or so, just in case.

I'm glad that the networks are catching onto the idea of a Saturday night encore broadcast- CBS did it over the summer with The Amazing Race. I'm sure it helps shows that are of a serial nature like this- keeps people from losing interest in a show if they miss just one ep.

Anyway...new ep tonight, woo hoo!

By Sicily1918 on Monday, December 20, 2004 - 4:13 pm:

Was the cave moth a metaphor? More than once something has 'coincidentally' appeared in this series: Locke's knives (possibly, he may have actually taken them with him), the polar bear right after Walt read the comic book, the guitar, and of course the source of fresh water.

Unless the show's suffering from Hollywoodism (where they introduce 'cool' things at the sacrifice of the story and/or continuity), Sawyer did not hit Sayid -- he was far too distant to do that and set off the flare.

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, December 20, 2004 - 10:45 pm:

As Locke speculated in a subsequent episode (the one right after the one where Sayid got hit, I think), it's possible to create a delayed fuse.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 8:44 am:

I can't believe I'm asking this for a second time, but I missed the repeat last night, so if anyone has a tape of it (I'm trying to collect them on tape) that they can lend to me, please let me know. :)

By Influx on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 11:01 am:

Time for Tivo® there, Luigi.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 1:14 pm:

I tried Tivo. I sent it back because I didn't like it. It's also too expensive.

By MrPorter on Friday, December 31, 2004 - 2:18 pm:

Luigi- I just wanted to let you know that I saw your post but unfortunately I recorded over the ep. Sorry I can't be of help this time around.

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, December 31, 2004 - 10:00 pm:

Thanks anyway. Happy New Year.

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, January 31, 2005 - 9:26 am:

Cool! Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) was listening to Drive Shaft onher stereo on a recent episode of Alias, there's a Drive Shaft music video at www.abc.com, and there's even a faux fan website at www.driveshaftband.com! The article in TV Guide where I read this says that the site has bios, photos, a discography and dedications to its "missing bassist", but none of that is on the site, which right now appears to be just one page.

By Dan Gunther on Monday, January 31, 2005 - 11:25 am:

Oh, cool, I've really got to check that out! That's hilarious! Thanks for the heads up, Luigi!

By constanze on Monday, May 09, 2005 - 1:36 pm:

I, too, was surprised that blond sister didn't mess it up ... but why did Boone desert his responsibility so quickly to dig? Shouldn't he of all know best that she's not the best person in the world to entrust sth. important to? (Yes, give her responsibility to teach her - but not sth. important right away!)

But then Kate runs off, too, to help Jack, instead of watching Sawyer. If it's close to 5 o'clock anyway (according to sawyers dialogue), then can't she wait for 10 min.? Does the island emit a stupefying field for common sense? And I don't trust Sawyer one inch.

Just how stupid is Sawyer? I can understand people being unintentionally a bother. But he goes out of his way to be an a**hole on purpose (nobody can be that big a jerk without trying!), and hoards stuff, when common sense should tell him that people will soon get back at him, and that if he's cast out of the group, he stands no chance of surviving. (I can understand that he thinks he has a chance with Kate better: most man are apparently that clueless that nice women like nice men and not the biggest jerks around.)

When Charlie goes to Locke in the jungle, he says that "most of them" are digging at the cave. Once again - there are supposedly 46 survivors? "Most of them" is about 10 people? Where are the rest? (Yes, it's nice to focus on some characters we get to know better - but then they should've started with fewer people from the start!)

Interesting observation of Sayid that their survival was impossible. Reminded me of what Locke said to Charlie last ep. about the island giving people what they want. So this isn't Dr. Moreaus island, but somekinda magic island? (Fairy land)? Then I'll doubt they'll ever get off...

Once again, interesting twists - not only about Sayid being knocked out, but also that Charlies brother, who seemed to be the wilder one, returned to a real square with dorky clothes included.

When I thought that blond sister would mess up, I wondered if Sayid would be intelligent enough not to start the antenna if the other rockets were missing.

I wonder if the mysterious island phantom knocked Sayid out? After all, it would've been easier for one of the humans to sabotage the beach antenna...

Strange that the cave-in seemed to consist mostly of dust (otherwise, Jack would've been in trouble!), but the diggers were carrying away stones, not earth.

Also, if Mike is in construction, why not send some people (the missing 30 or so) to get wood to save the tunnel? (Like in the Escape movie when they build the tunnel, they use boards to prevent collapse).

And why did the caves collapse suddenly at all? There wasn't any earthquake or similar, and if they crash all the time, there would've been signs of fallen stones & earth when Jack looked at the caves earlier.

Why shouldn't Jack and Kate get together? Can't Kate be innocent? Unless her flashback is a lie, that she helped the injured farmer who sold her out makes her not a real criminal to me.

You may find out the answers to these questions and more...

Eventually, bwa ha ha ha ha!

(The answers may surprise you.)

BTW, just what kind of drug was Charlie taking? From the way it looked, I thought it was Marihuana, but then he throws it into the fire, and he seems to take it through the nose/mouth rather than smoke it. Also, Marihuana isn't that much addictive, right?

Anybody know?

By Gordon Lawyer on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 - 7:13 am:

Heroin.

By constanze on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 - 1:19 pm:

Huh? I thought that was a white powder?

By R on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 - 4:16 pm:

No cocaine is a white powder after it has been cut. When it is in its raw form it looks sorta like coffee. Heroin looks like brown sugar and can be snorted, smoked or injected. And no marijuana is not very adictive at all. (trust me on that last one)

And no I do not know about heroin or coke from direct involvement but from one of the mechanics at work who used to be rather ...wild.

If this takes place in the same universe as Alias, has anyone told Wysse (in Alias) that is identical twin was killed in the pilot of this series ;-) If I remember correctly the same actor played the doomed pilot in the pilot.

Also, someone better tell Director Kendall that his twin is trapped on the island.

By Art Vandelay on Friday, July 08, 2005 - 6:17 am:

Maybe the whole island is part of a CIA 'Mission Impossible' type operation with Kendall and Wysse involved. I predict that Kate will eventually pull a mask off her face revealing herself to be Sydney Bristow.

Boone seems like a pretty decent guy. He probably feels that helping dig Jack out of the cave takes precedence.

Of course she does, she looooooooooooves him. :p

Yeah, but without someone seeing them?
