After Kate and Sawyer discover a metal case from the plane, Sawyer takes it, but Kate soon makes it clear that she needs whatever is inside the locked container. In flashbacks, we learn a little more about Kate's criminal past. Meanwhile, a sudden rise in the tide causes the beach dwellers to move further up from the sea, Rose helps Charlie cope with the loss of Claire, and Sayid recruits Shannon to help him translate several papers that he took from Rousseau, the French woman.

Kate backstory II.

Notes
-The model plane was in safety deposit box #815, the flight number of the crashed real plane.
-Unanswered question: What's the significance of the plane?

Even though the writing was in French, surely Sayid could notice that the symbols repeated themselves, couldn't he? Shouldn't that clue him into the fact that they might not be notes?

Interesting episode, though not as good as the last.

It doesn't seem like Locke and Boone told anyone about their discovery. I wonder if the axe and all their nights away from the camp have something to do with that.

I wonder if Kate reburied the marshal. I hope so.

More questions, no answers. It's like the glory days of The X-Files. Almost.

If anyone is wondering why that tune at the end sounded familiar -- it was "Beyond the Sea", made popular by Bobby Darin. (I thought cynically that it might be a subtle promo for the movie, but could find no connection.)

Interesting that Shannon asks Boone if Locke is his new boyfriend, and it seems to be asked somewhat seriously. Well, he is rather strikingly attractive. (Boone, I mean...)

What a lovely collection of humanity on the island. One is a murderer, one is a torturer, one is a drug addict...what next? Jack declaring he's a Republican. And why did the silent African American woman have to come back as a holy roller? I could have done without the "Old Time Gospel Hour". I could have also done without the rotting bodies underwater. Gore fiends might have loved it, but I was repulsed.

...and about that toy airplane trinket, talk about an anti-climatic event.

By Darth Sarcasm on Monday, January 10, 2005 - 7:17 pm:

So that's it, huh? You pick three extreme examples out of the 47 castaways and you make a judgement call about everyone? You also fail to note that Sayid was a torturer and was on his path to redemption... the Sawyer incident is certainly a stumble on that path. But are you saying that no one is capable of redeeming him/herself? As for the drug addict... I'd label him more of a victim than a nefarious individual.

But why don't you point at Walt, Sun, Claire, Hurley, Boone, Rose and use them as examples of humanity? Why only isolate and point out the negative?

And why, oh why, oh WHY does every friggin discussion on whatever issue have to delve into politics with you? I am sick of it! Get off your high horses and keep the political discussions/attacks/comments WHERE THEY BELONG!!!!

They never found the tail section, did they? (Forgive me if I brought this up before -- memory ain't what it used to be...) I mean, they found the cockpit, the middle section was on the beach, and now they found another, albeit small, part of the plane. It's possible they may find the tail section survivors on another part of the island (way to infuse new blood for season 2!!) so Rose's husband may yet be alive.

I have speculation about Kate's "man she killed" but I'll post it in white text. Highlight to read:

I think the "man she loved/killed" may just be her younger brother. She "killed" him through inaction or betrayal or not being able to help. The airplane trinket was something she had given him before this happened. Why was it in a safe deposit box, and why go through all that trouble just to get it back?

I don't know!!!

By NSetzer (Nsetzer) on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 - 6:27 am:

They haven't found the tail section, and Rose believes her husband to be alive for that very reason (she made the comment "They're probably thinking the exact same thing" when told by Jack that the others were dead)

You must admit that Charlie developing into a cry baby was annoying.

They found the tail section in the episode where Jack found the supply of fresh water.

By Josh M on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 - 8:01 pm:

That was the tail? I thought that that was another smaller part of the plane.

815 Watch: The safety deposit box is 815, the same number as the flight number that crashed in the pilot.
