By Gordon Lawyer on Wednesday, November 03, 2004 - 7:47 am:

Finally got around to seeing last Wednesday's episode. Regarding the corpses they found, do you think that they're suppose to be Earhart and Noonan? IIRC, Jack stated that they were at least fifty years dead, which would put it in a believable time frame.

By Dan Gunther on Wednesday, November 03, 2004 - 11:07 am:

Ooh, interesting thought! BTW, I LOVE this show!

By Influx on Friday, November 12, 2004 - 10:20 am:

Here are some of the as-yet unanswered questions.

How did the plane slice so neatly in half, and what caused it? If that happened, they should all be dead (as noted by Sayed in one episode).

What is the "monster" in the jungle? Is it biological or mechanical?

Are they still "on Earth", or in our dimension? Although I think it would be stretching credibility to get too far out with an explanation.

And now some speculation -- NO KNOWN SPOILERS -- just random thoughts...

I think it would be neat if they found out that one of the party was not actually on the plane, but was on the island already, and is making like they were a passenger. This pretty much rules out everyone that has had a flashbackstory (I missed Locke's episode, did he have one?). So far I don't believe we've seen Sayed, Hurley, Boone and his sister, the pregnant girl, the construction guy and his kid have a backstory yet (of all the main cast, anyway).

Eventually things will break down into a "Lord of the Flies"-type scenario, with one faction warring against the other.

We will eventually see some pairing up, but who? Nothing really obvious yet, except maybe Charlie and the pregnant girl. The Doc/Sawyer/criminal gal triangle is up in the air yet. Just by TV conventions Hurley would never get a girl, but this show has surprised me before. The construction guy and the Korean gal?

I hope they can answer some of the main questions in the first season, not drag them all out until no one cares anymore, then introduce new ones for the next season (kind of like Babylon 5 did).

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, November 12, 2004 - 3:03 pm:

Moderator? I don't think the island is a "desert" one. I think it's a forest or jungle island.

Yes, Influx, Locke's secret was revealed in the third episode Walkabout. It was awesome. Josh has put brief plot descriptions on the episode boards. (He's also put a Cast and Character Description list on the Main Page.)

By Rona on Thursday, December 02, 2004 - 9:37 am:

This week's Entertainment Weekly has a rather nice cover story on Lost. It includes some interesting theories on what's going on, from the "it's a dream", to alien's abducting the passengers and putting them on the island, to the "it's a secret government project".

The article reveals that the producers actually spent a million dollars to carve up a real plane and use it for the set on the beach.

By ScottN on Thursday, December 02, 2004 - 10:11 am:

The story on the paranoid conspiracy theories was in TV Guide a few weeks ago as well.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, December 02, 2004 - 10:42 am:

I like the purgatory theory. It makes the most sense to me. But I hope that's not it, or at least not as simple as that, because I'd rather be surprised than have it be something that I can already conceive of.

And for an entire plane, $1 million is pretty cheap. Must've been headed for the scrap heap.

By Josh M on Thursday, December 02, 2004 - 1:16 pm:

I believe that it was.

By Rona on Friday, December 03, 2004 - 10:45 am:

Or consider another theory, that the producers themselves don't know where the series is headed.

By Darth Sarcasm on Friday, December 03, 2004 - 5:13 pm:

Moderator? I don't think the island is a "desert" one. I think it's a forest or jungle island. - Luigi Novi

Depends on your use of the word desert.

A desert island is the proper term for an uninhabited island, as opposed to deserted island, which would mean one that was inhabited, but abandoned.

Of course, as it turns out, the island is neither desert nor deserted.

TPTB were quoted in USA Today that Season 2 Episode 3 is the big one.

By ScottN on Friday, September 23, 2005 - 10:07 am:

OK, how does Desmond fit into this? Is he tied in with the Deliverance Pirates? Did he have anything to do with Locke's recovery (much like Sara's)?

And... \electric-company{What about... Naomi?}

By Influx on Thursday, December 22, 2005 - 7:47 am:

TV Guide (more like "TV Hint" nowadays) has a short article this week about the connections between characters.

By Josh M on Wednesday, March 01, 2006 - 10:13 pm:

Tonight's episode really brought up a lot. Shed some light on what the Others are trying to do. If I were to guess from the little evidence we've seen and heard, I think that they abduct those they deem "good" because they're trying to protect them from a sickness that they believe is dangerous. This would explain the medicine injected into Claire and Desmond as well as the "Quarantine" sign on the inside of the hatch. Does a sickness really exist, though? Is someone messing with all of them? It will be interesting to find out. I know this show still has me tuning in.

By TomM on Monday, March 06, 2006 - 8:58 am:

Someone on one of the show boards (but not one of the episodes with him) asked about Desmonde's story: particularly how he came to be in the hatch. We have only his story, as told to Jack. And in many ways it is very similar to Uncle Henry's. So he just might be an "Other"

On the other hand, he was alone in Swan hatch; he did believe in the countdown; and he booked out of there when he could have fed the Losties more dis-information

By Josh M on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 2:29 pm:

So, there's a website, www.thehansofoundation.org. There's a number 1-877-HANSORG. There's a website for Gary Troup's book Bad Twin (what a tacky title) http://www.garytroupbooks.com/. There's even an interview with the guy. Click on the video clip. It's short, about 45 seconds, but interesting.

For those who want to know about the clues that the Hanso Foundation site has dropped go to its Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanso_Foundation

Otherwise SPOILER WARNING SPOILER WARNING SPOILER WARNING, ETC.

Using the password from the phone call (breaking strain) on the newsletter page, the site will change and you make contact with someone called "Persephone". She seems to be a Mulder-like investigator. Using links throughout the site, you discover that Hanso himself was last seen in December of 2002 in Spain. That's his last public appearance. Using the password from Spri- uh, I mean Sublymonal, you find out that Mittelwork, Hanso's heir apparent and the company's VP, may not be who he says he is. Cal Tech, where he apparently went to school, has no record of his enrollment. Typing "monkey" in to send to the orangutan, will send you to another page. Connect all of the highlighted cells and you will be taken to a letter send to the CDC by the head of a watchdog group, claiming that the Hanso Foundation may have created a deadly strain of bacteria and that the CDC should investigate. Clicking on the signature leads to a second letter, from the new head of that same watchdog group. This person explains that the group's former leader has been replaced and that their letter to the CDC was premature. Click on the circled name gives you Persephone's theory that the Hanso Foundation got to them.

The Hanso Foundation recently published an ad in USA Today (I think) condemning information in Troup's Bad Twin that reflects negatively on the Foundation. Interestingly, Troup's other book is out of print and apparently very hard to find.

It seems that the Hanso Foundation is Lost's own Umbrella Corp./X-Files Consortium.

END SPOILER WARNING

Did you see these things on purpose, or by accident, and now you're ticked that they're spoiled for you?

By Josh M on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 - 7:01 pm:

No, I was just noting it.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, September 21, 2006 - 7:03 am:

Yesterday, I had a bit of a fright. I was on line for a taping of Conan O'Brien, and struck a conversation with someone else on the VIP line, who said he was an employee of GE. He mentioned that last night would be the season premiere of Lost, which startled me, because I hadn't heard or seen any promos for it (I figured I missed them because I've been preoccupied lately), and didn't want to miss it. I got in time, but we haven't gotten our TV Guide for some reason, and the TVG website doesn't work for me, so I guessed it was at 9pm. But right after I programmed my VCR, there was a promo for the ABC programs last night, and Grey's Anatomy was on at 9pm, with Lost nowhere in sight. I wanted to strangle that guy who made me think I might miss this season's premiere!

By Josh M on Thursday, September 21, 2006 - 8:51 am:

Heh heh. See, that's why you must trust in the moderator. I'm always right. And if I'm not, all I need to do is enact a little "revisionist history".

Why did you post that in this thread?

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, September 21, 2006 - 3:52 pm:

I guess I was just continuing the conversation. I suppose one could argue that my situation is somewhat pertinent to the "What in the world is going on?" question posed by this board's title? :)

Okay, maybe not.

IGN's Top 50 Lost Loose Ends. Nice little tally.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Sunday, November 19, 2006 - 9:20 pm:

Great read, Josh. Thanks for posting it. A couple of points on which I disagree, though:

Item #26 asserts that three different pieces of pre-Flight 815 information we know about Libby are contradictory: Her occupation as a shrink, her time as a patient at the same institution as Hurley, and her giving her ex-husband's boat, the Elizabeth, to Desmond. But I don't see how any of these are necessarily contradictory. I'm guessing that the specific thing that the article's authors Chris Carabott, Eric Goldman, Dan Iverson, Colin Moriarty & Brian Zoromski are thinking about is that her statement that she's a shrink must be a lie, because she was a mental patient. But why is this? Shrinks never suffer from mental illness? Sufferers of mental illness come from all walks of life. It's irrational to think that shrinks must somehow be immune to this.

Item #39 asks why the Others waited so long to kidnap Jack in light of Ben’s tumor. This is easily explained lots of ways: 1. Prior to his death, Ethan was the Others’ doctor. 2. Ben may only have discovered he had the tumor recently. 3. Ben and the Others are obviously not going to be too eager to go under the knife with one of the Lostaways holding the scalpel.

Item #11 points out how numerous people have been stranded on the island, and mentions Henry Gale as one of the examples. Putting aside the fact that his name is Benjamin Linus (and all previous references to his character mention this), we do not know that Ben was “stranded”. This passage seems like it was not written with the most recent episodes in mind (whereas all the other passages seem up to date), because it seems to take at face value the things Ben said back when he was posing as Henry Gale.

Item #9 says that Jack shot U.S. Marshall Mars as an act of mercy. This is not true. As I pointed out on the Dearly Departed Tote board, it was Sawyer who shot Mars. The same item also asks why, if the island has a healing ability, has Ben’s tumor not healed. Ben doesn’t live on the island. As he revealed to Sawyer in Every Man For Himself, the Others live on a different island.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Sunday, November 19, 2006 - 9:43 pm:

Item #2 mentions the theory that the smoke monster is a nanobot cloud. The creators have discredited this theory, as seen here and here.

By Josh_M (Josh_M) on Sunday, November 19, 2006 - 10:14 pm:

Luigi Novi: 2. Ben may only have discovered he had the tumor recently.

He tells Jack in The Cost of Living that he learned it two days before the plane crashed.

Item #11 points out how numerous people have been stranded on the island, and mentions Henry Gale as one of the examples. Putting aside the fact that his name is Benjamin Linus (and all previous references to his character mention this), we do not know that Ben was “stranded”.

They're actually referring to the real Henry Gale, the man who crashed in the balloon and Sayid dug up.

Item #9 ... asks why, if the island has a healing ability, has Ben’s tumor not healed. Ben doesn’t live on the island. As he revealed to Sawyer in Every Man For Himself, the Others live on a different island.

The Hydra's on another island. "Otherville", however, appears to be on the main island. It seems unlikely that Ethan and Goodwin could both run to the crashsites within an hour or two if they had to do so from the Hydra's island.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Monday, November 20, 2006 - 5:21 am:

Thanks for the clarifications.

Is "Hydra" the name of the prison area where Jack, Sawyer and Kate are being kept? Where was this established?

And if the two islands are connected by an underground tunnel, couldn't two expert runners make it in that time?

By Kevin (Kevin) on Monday, November 20, 2006 - 4:30 pm:

I've entertained the ideas that Libby was a shrink with psychological problems, or a patient inspired by her cure to become a psychologist, etc, but ultimately I've come to agree with the article that she was lying. I suspect she was going to have bouts of insanity on the island.

Hopefully they'll bring her back in flashbacks and flesh out her story somehow.

By justice mann (Dumont) on Monday, November 20, 2006 - 5:42 pm:

couldn't two expert runners make it in that time
especially if they had those cool james bond tunnel carts.

Juliet tells it to Jack in A Tale of Two Cities

The second virtual game has come to an end in the lead-up to the S4 premiere. For those who'd like to know SPOILER WARNING

it covered the discovery of the apparent wreckage of Flight 815 that Naomi had mentioned.

By triggins on Saturday, March 22, 2008 - 7:44 pm:

Here is my theory for who is the man in the coffin. I don't think it is Ben or Michael or anyone connected to the losties. I think Jack is so far off the deep end he is attending random funerals. That is why Kate is confused when he asks her if she was planning to attend.

By ScottN on Thursday, November 20, 2008 - 10:46 am:

At this point, there are no spoilers, so...

My theory is that Widmore is the money behind Hanso/Dharma. In "Cabin Fever", the "Plan B" folder has a Dharma logo. I like someone else's speculation that Widmore is a survivor of Black Rock as well.

How is Penny going to explain Desmond to Widmore?

By Josh M on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 - 1:08 pm:

All right, so questions that may or may not be answered by this Sunday:

  1. Was the sickness real or was it just Danielle going crazy? Did it have to do with what was happening to the people on the freighter?
  2. Where did that DHARMA pallet drop come from? Was it an automatic process? (Probably won't get an answer to this one)
  3. Walt and his nature (or this one)
  4. Libby's background (or this one)
  5. Birth problems on the island (or this one)
  6. And who was in that other canoe shooting guns at our heroes.

Any others?

By Andrew Gilbertson (Zarm_rkeeg) on Thursday, May 20, 2010 - 6:49 am:

The canoe they gotta answer- I figured it was being saved for the finale, but I just can't see them not at least referencing it... of course, maybe that's just my optimism.

Here's another one:
7. What have Boone, Shanon, and Eko done to get themselves so blacklisted when everyone else and their moter is being seen again this season? ;-)

By ScottN on Thursday, May 20, 2010 - 9:07 am:

I thought we saw Boone in LA X?

By Josh M on Thursday, May 20, 2010 - 11:28 am:

Indeed we did. And I read Shannon is making an appearance in the finale. AAA is not, though.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Thursday, May 20, 2010 - 5:38 pm:

The actress who played Shanon was asked to come back and declined. Hence Boone's line about being unsuccessful in getting his sister to come back from Australia.

By Andrew Gilbertson (Zarm_rkeeg) on Friday, May 21, 2010 - 7:05 am:

Quite right, ScottN- my wife pointed that out to me late last night, too. D'oH! :-) Memory has never been my strong suit... :-)

By Josh M on Friday, May 21, 2010 - 10:56 pm:

I thought she didn't get in the premiere because of scheduling conflicts. There were reports later that said Maggie would be coming back. Same with Elizabeth Mitchell.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Saturday, May 22, 2010 - 4:31 am:

Yeah, I didn't mean she declined out of apathy or bitterness.

By Josh M on Sunday, May 23, 2010 - 11:51 am:

Looking back, it looks like the "sickness" may have been answered in This Place Is Death and Season 6. In that episode, young Rousseau mentions that it was the monster that changed her crew mates somehow, that they were "infected" by it. Of course, this is similar to what Dogen notes of Claire and Sayid. So, it looks like the pieces were there, we just had to put them together.

By Josh M on Sunday, May 23, 2010 - 11:56 am:

One does still wonder how Sayid came back to life, though. Man in black?
