Kate and Sawyer divulge dark secrets to each other while tracking a renegade boar that Sawyer swears is purposely harassing him. Throughout the hunt, Sawyer remembers a trip to Sydney where he planned to kill the man who conned his parents, as well as a meeting in a bar with Jack's father. Meanwhile, Hurley and Sayid worry about Charlie after his brush with death and shooting Ethan to death.

Sawyer backstory II

Unanswered question: Who's the real Sawyer? Was the boar really the Duckett's spirit? Are the voices Sawyer hears the same Sayid hears? When and why did Kate get married? Who exactly did Kate kill? The man she loved?

I'm guessing that this episode has something to do with Sawyer's brief appearance in Hearts and Minds.

I think this reinforces my impression that "Sawyer" is just a big jerk, rather than a hardened criminal. After all, he had an opportunity to rape Kate earlier and I think if he was less (I don't know... something, can't find the appropriate word right now), he would have.

WOW, Sawyer met Jack's dad, and he knows it!! Possible ammo to use against Jack in the future?

Possible nit -- if Frank is selling shrimp in Australia, wouldn't his shack read "Sweet Prawns?"

And a very nice CIG shot of Sawyer in OZ with the Sydney Opera House in the background. I know they didn't fly him down there just for that one scene.

When?

He wasn't Australian, though, so maybe he named the place with the word he was accustomed to. (Plus there technically is a difference between prawn and shrimp, but I won't get into that.)

I don't want to say it was predictable, but I suspected a possible encounter with Jack's dad. And once Jack's dad confessed his love for Jack, I knew Sawyer would hold onto that piece of information... after all, he holds onto everything else people need.

It was unclear to me whether Sawyer assumed Frank Sawyer's full name, or just his last name. When the T-1000 mentions the name "Frank Sawyer," he says something like, "Which is the name you assumed." But when he meet Frank, he tells him his name is James. So is he going by Frank Sawyer? Or James Sawyer?

Also interesting to note that "Frank" means "honesty."

Anon -- when they were fighting over the case they found in the waterfall. I felt that if he was a really "bad" guy he would have roughed her up pretty bad (although she can handle herself pretty well.)

By Rona on Thursday, February 17, 2005 - 10:15 am:

I thought it was truly cowardly for Sawyer to shoot some poor man who works at a shrimp shack.

Sayid also reveals to Charlie that he's more than just a torturer, he's a murder who felt no remorse for his victim. I thought it was good to see Hurley question Sayid about Iraq. Finally, someone shows what would be a realistic interest in Sayid's past.

Again, Locke shows up to offer some mystical mumbo jumbo (Was a golden retriever his dead sister? Was the boar Sawyer's victim come back to haunt him?).

A small nit. In an earlier ep, Hurley mentions he's been lossing weight. He's clearly been gaining weight; he's bigger now.

Just what exactly was the point of Jack and his father saying the Red Sox would never win the World Series, when everyone knows they won last year's world series. Is it supposed to be evidence that Jack doesn't know because the plane crashed before the World Series took place?

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, February 17, 2005 - 11:38 am:

Rona, Sayid never said he was a murderer. He said he took part in the execution of a bomber who blew up a policeman's wife and child. How was such a person a "victim"? Wasn't that bomber the murderer?

He also never said that he felt no remorse for it; He said the exact opposite; that he still woke in the middle of the night thinking about it. Doesn't that indicate that he did feel remorse over it?

I didn't notice him being noticeably bigger or smaller.

1) Yes.

2) It was also used as a giveaway to clue Sawyer in to the fact that the guy in the bar was Jack's pop.

The pilot episode was aired before the World Series. We're probably meant to assume that the crash also occurred before the World Series. The survivors have no way of knowing the Red Sox won.

Well, I was wrong.

But it was a good episode. I saw Hibbs' lie coming a mile away though.

Darth Sarcasm: When the T-1000 mentions the name "Frank Sawyer," he says something like, "Which is the name you assumed." But when he meet Frank, he tells him his name is James. So is he going by Frank Sawyer? Or James Sawyer?
I figured that Sawyer had actually told the guy his real name.

Rona: I thought it was truly cowardly for Sawyer to shoot some poor man who works at a shrimp shack
I'm not trying to justify his actions, but Sawyer did believe that the man was more than just a poor man who owns a shrimp shack.

By Rodney Hrvatin on Saturday, June 11, 2005 - 3:14 am:

So who was the boar meant to be?

My guess: the "poor guy who owns a shrimp shop" (Rona). Just like Locke's sister apparently came back to tell her mum that it wasn't her fault, this guy knew that Sawyer has setup to shoot him and rather than letting him have that guilt hang around his neck he comes back to tell him all is ok.

Am I nuts, or am I right?
by the way, as of this post, this episode was the last to be screened in Australia- so please avoid future spoilers when answering, ta!

Trivia: Brittany Perrineau, who plays the woman Sawyer makes out with, is the wife of Harold Perrineau, who plays Michael.
