Who will get knocked off

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Lost: The Island of Mystery: Who will get knocked off
By Gordon Lawyer on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 5:21 am:

In the most recent issue of TV Guide, they had an interview with Josh Holloway (Sawyer). When asked about the much talked about killing off one of the opening credits characters, he confirmed it and for a hint said (I'm paraphrasing here) to pay attention to whose backgrounds have been more developed. I could have this backwards, but I'm assuming this means it will be one of the less developed characters. So those with two episodes devoted to their background (Jack, Kate, Charlie, Sawyer, Locke, and Sayid) should be safe. Due to the nature of their pasts, Claire and Walt also seem unlikely. Of the remaining six, my gut tells me it will be Boone. Any other opinions?

Well, SPOILERS:

I've heard from various sources that the doomed character will definitely be a male, and that it is not Charlie or Jack. I believe that the smart money is either on Jin or Boone, with Boone being my first pick.

I would hope that it's a male. Of the 14 main characters, only four are female.

Clues from Josh Holloway (Sawyer): In the new issue of TV Guide, Holloway is interviewed (Possible Spoiler Warning):

TVGuide: Cocreator J.J. Abrams has said one character will be killed off this season. Do you know who it is?
Holloway: Yes.
TVGuide: How do you feel about losing one of your costars?
Holloway: The someone-dying thing really breaks my heart. It's a very good friend of mine, and that hurts. I'm going to miss the person a lot. But that's the way it is. Who knows? I may be joining them next season.

In a sidebar to that interview, other revelations by J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof:

-A cast member will be injured in the March 30th episode, Deus Ex Machina (tonight).

-Claire will give birth in the April 9th episode. But Abrams add the cryptic remark, "The story of Rousseau is something I would be nervous about if I were Claire."

-In the same episode, Julie Bowen of Ed appears in flashback as one character's fiancee. Jack will also wrestle with self-doubt as he struggles to save the person injured in the March 30th episode Deus Ex Machina.

-Season 1 will end with a "jaw-dropping cliff-hanger" that Lindelof says will compare to Dallas's "Who Shot JR"? cliffhanger.

By Gordon Lawyer on Thursday, March 31, 2005 - 5:25 am:

Looks like it'll be Boone. A fall like the one he took would surely cause some internal injuries which Jack would not likely be able to treat.

By R on Thursday, March 31, 2005 - 9:24 am:

Defiantely. IF Boone doesn't bite it there had better be some kind of darn good explanation oterwise.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, March 31, 2005 - 11:10 am:

Too obvious, and too telegraphed. Also, I accidentally omiited an exchange from the Holloway interview above. It goes in between the first and second one:

TVGuide: "Can you give us any clues?"
Holloway: "Look at whose story lines have been developing and whose haven't.

So who is this? The one character who has not really been developing in my view, is Hurley. He hasn't really changed at all during the course of the season. Granted, things have been revealed about him, just as with all the other main characters, but he's pretty much stayed the same. Even his backstory depicted him merely being reactive than proactive, experiencing huge life events without actually instigating them one way or the other. Boone has undergone change. So has Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Charlie, Jin, Sun, Michael, Lawyer, Locke, Claire, Shannon & Sayid, to one degree or another. Then again, the change or journey experienced by a character is probably subjective.

By Dan Gunther on Thursday, March 31, 2005 - 3:59 pm:

Well, it's not Hurley who dies. Uhm... mostly 'cause I don't want him to. :( Not Hurley!!! Please!!!

By Josh M on Thursday, March 31, 2005 - 9:58 pm:

I got this bad feeling tonight while reading the article that it'll be Michael. But, it's just a feeling.

SPOILER WARNING SPOILER WARNING SPOILER WARNING

Hey, I was right this time! Good bye, Mr. Eko.

By Josh M on Monday, May 24, 2010 - 11:56 pm:

So, to recap, if you're a main character on Lost, your chances of getting killed are probably higher than most series. The ones who died:
Boone, Shannon, Ana Lucia, Libby, Mr. Eko, Nikki, Paulo, Charlie, Michael, Charlotte, Daniel, Locke, Juliet, Ilana, Sayid, Sun, Jin, and Jack.

Survived:
Kate, Claire, Hurley, Sawyer, Walt, Desmond, Ben, Miles, Frank, and Richard.

So, final tally is 18 down of unnatural causes and 10 making it to the Reign of Hurley. They do not mess around on this show.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - 5:02 am:

Well, technically, they all died at some point and gathered together at the final scene.

Chances of black male former cast members appearing in the finale: 0%.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - 7:39 am:

BTW, seems to me if you're going to count Nikki and Paulo you should probably throw Arzt in there as well. (Come to think of it, what was Frogurt's final fate? I can't remember if we saw him die or not.)

And Bernard and Rose to those who presumably made it to Hurley's time, no?

By Kevin (Kevin) on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - 7:52 am:

Frogurt: killed when shot by the flaming arrow. Remembered the scene but not the outcome.

Other major characters who died
Jacob, Smoke Monster, Danielle, Alex.

If the smoke monster was forbidden to kill, how could he kill Eko and the pilot?

By ScottN on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - 9:32 am:

I think he just couldn't kill Jacob.

By Josh M on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - 9:42 am:

Yeah, like I said, I was basically counting the people who survived up until the point of Jack's death in the real world.

I was tabulating the main characters i.e. those credited at one point in the main cast and not as guest cast pre-finale. The finale actually credited Bernard and Rose along with Eloise, Christian, Chang, and Penelope. Probably would have had Widmore, too, if they'd found a place for Alan Dale in the finale.

Though from those standards the man in black should count since he was portrayed by Terry O'Quinn for a season and a half. So, that's 19 main characters dying before the show's end in the real world.

ScottN: I think he just couldn't kill Jacob.

Nor the candidates. It seems that those two (nor the French team, the crew of the Black Rock, Widmore's people, etc.) were not candidates.

I thought that might be your criterion but I didn't think/know Paulo and Nikki were credited that way.
