4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.
What's the significance?
Also, on "Tripping the Rift" tonight (episode: Six, Lies and Videotape), there was a Lost tribute with the numbers.
We all know about Flight 815, and the A$23000 reward.
There are several fan websites that track all of the occurances of the numbers. Two of them are http://losthatch.com/numbers.aspx and http://thelostnumbers.blogspot.com/
Jorge Garcia (Hurley) has his own speculations in an interview for The Great Link.
The Powerball lottery of $340 million was won by someone in Oregon. Here's an excerpt from the story.
Mary Neubauer, spokeswoman for the Iowa Lottery, said hundreds of ticket buyers had played a set of numbers from the ABC (search) drama "Lost," which featured a character who won $156 million by playing a string of digits obtained from a patient in a mental institution: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42. "I just think it speaks to people's fascination with numbers and the what-if factor," Neubauer said.
Anybody seen them in shows besides Lost?
As I said, I saw them in Tripping the Rift (Chode's "Now Serving" number was 4-8-15-16-23-24).
I guess I should learn to use preview. The last number was of course 42.
And I wonder if the 42 in the list is a Douglas Adams tribute?
I'm just hoping they don't overdo it. It was kind of fun when it was sort of a secret, in a 47-y kind of way. But now, they are integral to the plot, and if they keep coming up in unconnected ways it will be too obvious.
A tidbit I just read -- When Hurley on the scooter passes by a cheerleading squad on the way to the airport, the squad was wearing The Numbers.
Yep, they were.
Another reference. The timer is 108 minutes.
108 = (4 * 23) + 16.
And even better
4 + 8 + 15 + 16 + 23 + 42 = 108
Apparently, Catwoman has the numbers too, as seen on the cover to Catwoman #51.
^^ Hey, that's really cool!
They also appeared in an episode of Veronica Mars.
It appears that they've become the new "47."
Ooh, you guys will like this one!
Now 815 has made an appearance in Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk #2, which came out yesterday. In the 2004-2005 miniseries The Ultimates, which reimagines the comic book superteam The Avengers in a more "realistic" universe, the Hulk went on a rampage in New York City, killing 800 people in the process.
But now, in UWvH #2, that number has been specified to 815. Pretty convenient the initial number was one that could be so easily tweaked into 815 by the writer of UWvH, who just happens to be.......Lost co-creator, producer and head writer Damon Lindelof!
Side note: the sequence 4815162342 does not appear in the first million digits of the decimal expansion of pi.
Oh and what about the second million?
And how and more importantly why do you know this?
;-) Still cool though I guess. Somehow I didnt think the creator's of the show would be that deep about the numbers. Especially since they have said in a few interviews that the numbers are actually meaningless.
What are the chances of that particular combination being in the first million? About 1/10e10?
Even though this wrapped up months ago, I thought that I should put this here. The answer about The Numbers.
Well, the numbers seem to be cursed individually as well as collectively. Or so Jim Carrey discovers in his new movie The Number 23.
