Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Lost: Season Two: 10. The 23rd Psalm
Aired 1/11/2006

Writers: Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse
Director: Matt Earl Beesley

Guest Cast
Frederick McCormack: Yemi

John Bryan: Thug Captain

Olekan Obileye: Young Yemi

Cynthia Charles: Nigerian Woman

After recognizing Charlie's Virgin Mary statue and exposing the heroin within it, Eko has Charlie take him to the crashed plane in the jungle. He is reminded of his past as a lawless thug in Nigeria and one occasion where he enlisted the help his priest brother to smuggle heroin out of the country using the plane. Along the way, they have a little run in with the island monster.

Mr. Eko backstory.

Note:
-Numbers sighting: the 23rd psalm.
-The plane found by Locke and Boone is revealed to be Eko's doing.
-Charlie's hoarding a stash of heroin-filled Virgin Marys in the jungle
-We get a longer glimpse of the island "security system", this time as a larger plume of black smoke with something flashing inside.
-Michael has another chat with someone on the computer, whom he believes to be Walt. We don't see "Walt"'s final message but it begins "You need to com-" before cutting away to Michael.
-Eko has been carving scripture into his stick.
-In the final abc podcast of last season, Lindelof and Cuse note that this episode is not the last time we see the monster in season 2. It in fact makes an appearance sometime in the following 13 episodes and that we've seen it without knowing it.
-Continuation of Day 49
-Unanswered Questions: Was that the part of the island monster or the entire thing? Why did it leave Eko alone? Why did it show him flashes of what appeared to be his past? How did a plane that left Nigeria end up in the south Pacific?
By TomM on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 - 8:13 pm:

Best visual: Eko staring down the "security system."

Best line: "Are you going to beat me with your Jesus stick?"

More 22/23 confusion. If Eko is Catholic, then he would know the Psalm he recited (referenced in the title) as the 22nd Psalm, not the 23rd.

Wow. To avoid spoilers I will avoid referencing anythign specific other than yikes what a ride this is.

I have to agree with TomM about the best visual. Whatever that thing is seeing him staring it down and it goign away was just awesome. Thouhg what where the flashes when the camera passed "through" it? It looked like it might have been people but I couldnt tell if they where from his flashbacks or on the island.

Yeah the line was funny. I may use that the next time i get into an argument with a CTer in milford. Charlie does need to learn a bit of humility when confronting people twice the size of him who are already in a bad mood.

Isnt it amazing how many coincidences there are bringing all these people together? ;-)

And what charlie has been doing does seem to lean towards a fall.

Speaking of fallign and redemption and forgiveness. Is that a theme other people are sensing too? I mean Ekos revelation at the end to charlie (which I gotta say the way it was delivered was another great line "Are you or arn't you? Yes......I am." And jin and his wife giving the fish to ana and everything else with sawyer and all.

Also the only two people who have been eye to smoke with the defense mecha and not been hurt are Locke and Eko, argueably the two most spiritual people in the group.Locke with his Jediish attitude and Eko with his more traditional faith. Very interesting. Maybe they are going with the theme that no matter what you believe as long as you believe you will be ok?

Next week looks wicked cool

Pretty good episode. Couple of questions though:

Why did those thugs try to force Eko and his brother to kill that old man in the teaser? Why did they take Eko away?

Why did Eko tell Charlie that the first corpse they found before coming across the beachcraft (the one with the gold tooth) was a man who saved his life? When did that happen in the episode? Is Eko referring to the notion that he saved his life by kicking him away from the craft, and that in doing so, he spared him a continued life as a criminal and put him on the road to redemption?

By R on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 - 9:01 pm:

It was a test. To see if their new enforcer would be able to do it or not. If he hadn't done it or eko hadn't come up they would have had someone else do it and the previosu contestant would be removed.

I think Eko was referring to him being kicked away from the plane. And yes it did give him the chance to save his life by getting on the road to faith, redemption and taking over his brother's works.

I missed the whole first half -- my mom called and talked for a half hour :(

Is it me, or is this just too much coincidence?

By ScottN on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 - 11:07 pm:

Note: those two sentences are not related. I meant the Eko backstory and it's relation to everyone on the island as the coincidence.

Scott, I have it on tape if you want a copy. (I might need a blank tape, though).

Okay episode. Not the best, though I did like Eko's backstory, as unoriginal as it may have been.

I wonder what it was that Eko was seeing in the smoke. Looked like there was something in there. And was it the same thing that Locke saw when he viewed it in Walkabout?

TomM: More 22/23 confusion. If Eko is Catholic, then he would know the Psalm he recited (referenced in the title) as the 22nd Psalm, not the 23rd.
I checked my copy of the Catholic Youth Bible. It's the 23rd in there. Maybe it just depends on the revision or edition.

R: And what charlie has been doing does seem to lean towards a fall.
Agreed

R: Thouhg what where the flashes when the camera passed "through" it?
I did a frame by frame look at it (Yeah, I guess I'm obsessed). I don't usually post spoiler warnings on the episode board, but...
JUST IN CASE YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW/POSSIBLE SPOILER, HIGHLIGHT TO READ:

Most of the images appeared to be people, though one looked like a person standing on the roof of a house. Two appear to be Christ, especially toward the very end when what looks like an image of the crucifix appears on the left side of the screen

Someone posted this link on another forum. It has several nice images of the flashes in the smoke, so for those who are curious:

Traditionally, the Catholic numbering of the Psalms combines two of the Protestant Psalms and then later splits another one. This results in the same total number of psalms, but a run where specific psalms have usually been numbered one less in Catholic Bibles than in Protestant ones. It is possible that, in the interest of Ecumencalism, more recent Catholic translations use the more widespread Protestant numbering, especially since the 22nd/23rd "23rd Psalm" is so well-known.

By TomM on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 - 4:07 pm:

Possible Nit: I have to admit that I didn't notice it myself until it was pointed out, but while reciting the Psalm, Eko says "Yea, though I walk through the Shadow of the Valley of Death," instead of "Yea, though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death."

Possible Anti-Nit: It might be that he is referring to the Island's security system, which he has just demonstrated holds no fear for him.

By R on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 - 6:04 pm:

I missed that. Interesting anti-nit though.

The Eko character is the most repulsive character yet. He brutally murders (slashes in the face with a knife) two men. He bullies a priest and community.
Yet, at the end all is fine because he believes in Christ. Finding Christ is the cure for many sins. Worked for Bush.

Take it to PM. Now.

By Art Vandelay on Monday, April 24, 2006 - 4:21 pm:

Aren't Walt's messages to Michael too well typed and punctuated to be sent by a kid in a hurry? One of them even ends with "..." for dramatic effect.
