18. Dave

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Lost: Season Two: 18. Dave
Aired April 5

Writers: Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz
Director: Jack Bender

Guest Cast
Michael Emerson: Henry Gale
Evan Handler: Dave
Ron Bottitta: Leonard
Bruce Davison: Dr. Brooks

Hurley believes he's going crazy when he starts seeing an old acquaintance from his pre-island life in the jungle.

Elsewhere, the interrogation of Henry Gale continues and Charlie helps Eko build... something. Maybe it's a really big crib. Or a small raft. I suppose we'll see.

Hurley backstory III

Notes:
-We learn why Hurley was in a mental hospital. He believed that he was responsible for the deaths of two people, trauma that led to his institutionalization.
-We also learn in this week's big revelation that Libby was also a patient in that hospital. Apparently, that is why Hurley recognized her.
-Dave says "See you in another life," to Hurley. Desmond says this phrase to Jack in Orientation and Nadia writes a variant on the back of her picture to Sayid.
-Unanswered Questions: How and why did Hurley see Dave? What is it Mr. Eko and Charlie are building? Who is the "Him" Henry refers to? Why was Libby in the hospital? Did Henry tell the truth about not inputting the numbers? Has he told the truth about anything?

Thoughts:
-I should've seen that end coming. I didn't
-Whether truth or another lie, it appears that Henry's revelation to Locke shakes him up quite a lot.

(Must... not... read... synopsis...)

I did it again. Set the timer to record from 7:59 to 8:05 instead of 9:05. I was so concerned about not missing the last few minutes in case they extended the hour (as they've done several times) I set the concluding time wrong.

Well, here's hoping someone posts it on YouTube...

By ScottN on Thursday, April 06, 2006 - 11:50 am:

PAL. Previes made it look like Hurley fell off.

The big Libby revelation also explains her attraction to Hurley, which even Hurley himself (via Dave) has trouble explaining.

By ScottN on Thursday, April 06, 2006 - 11:51 am:

Influx: I do that too... 8:55 to 10:05. However, this episode specifically ran 5 minutes over (Time Warner showed it as 9:00 to 10:05 PDT).

By R on Thursday, April 06, 2006 - 4:08 pm:

I noticed that about Locke's reaction. Speaking of reactions I loved seeing Hurley pummel Sawyer. And Jin sure looked like he was in a hurry to go help.

This whole episode messed with your mind compleately. As from a Certain POV what "dave" (They shoulda named him Tyler ;-) )told Hurley about how the island worked and all actually made sense. (You dont think they would actually do that for the finale or something do you?)

I thought Sayid and Anna where going to do the whole good cop/Bad cop (or in their case bad cop/worse cop) routine on henry. So god cant see the island either? Interesting comment. Also looks like deliverance guy is not the top of the food chain. And whoever is at the top is even scarier.

Yeah PAL peeved me as I thought this was the end of hurley when i saw them. Makes you wonder about next week.

By ScottN on Thursday, April 06, 2006 - 5:08 pm:

Speaking of reactions I loved seeing Hurley pummel Sawyer.

Looked like most of the Lostaways loved it too.

Deliverance Guy aka Zeke is not really a Deliverance type. See "Maternity Leave", where we see him in Claire's flashback, plus Kate finds his fake beard.

By R on Thursday, April 06, 2006 - 7:32 pm:

I know what you mean Scottn. If it wasnt for Sun I wonder how long it would have taken for HUrley to calm down or sawyer to get him off or someone to do something.

Speaking of Locke I am not surprised by his reaction to the offer of the wheelchair.

I had forgotten that his "name" is zeke. I knew about his fake beard from the med lab hatch( collect them all) but couldnt remember what if any name they gave and deliverance guy was as good a designation as any i could think of then.

By ScottN on Thursday, April 06, 2006 - 7:40 pm:

Actually, it's not Zeke, either, it's "Zeke" (with quotes), since that's what we all call him thanks to Sawyer.

By MarkN on Thursday, April 06, 2006 - 10:30 pm:

I hated seeing Hurley throwing all that food around cuz he thought the island was making him eat and stay fat, which if true would explain why he's never seemed to have lost any appreciable amount at all. Now if only they'd explain how Shephard manages to keep his buzzcut without benefit of an electric shaver and someone else to do a perfect job of it on him, either, and I mean before they opened the hatch and saw that it's got electricity and other goodies.

R: Yeah PAL peeved me as I thought this was the end of hurley when i saw them. Makes you wonder about next week
Nah, if it were the end of Hurley, abc would have told us "Tonight!! Someone will die! On Lost!!!! Tune in!" for at least a month now.

By Jesse on Friday, April 07, 2006 - 9:53 am:

So, does anyone believe "Henry" when he says that he never punched in the numbers?

By R on Friday, April 07, 2006 - 4:51 pm:

Okay "ScottN" I'll remember that. ;-) Name, name, whos got the name?
I forgot if anyone called him anything else during maternity leave.

MarkN They borrowed Gilligan's shaver, the professor's toolkit and Ginger's makeup case.

Josh Yeah and there would have been a large full coverage spread in TV guide.

Jesse: I'm not really sure what to believe when it comes to Henry anymore. I do think he is one big Mindfruck going on and thats his main job.

By ScottN on Friday, April 07, 2006 - 6:12 pm:

R, "ScottN" actually *is* my real name (look for really really early posts in the Trek boards). N is my initial.

So there! Neener Neener Neener!

If you are who you say you are and if you really exist and I'm not lying in some bed somewhere making all this up and you arnt really the part of me that isnt a part of me....*sigh*.......... Did anyone see a bald guy in a bathrobe go by here? I think I need a drink...............

By LUIGI NOVI on Saturday, April 08, 2006 - 5:28 am:

Y'know, I had been beginning to wonder why we had not been getting info on Libby. Here she was, one of the new additions to the cast, and yet she hadn't gotten a flashback episode for her, even though Rose and Bernard are slated to have one. She was mostly a cipher, and lo and behold, this ep begins to answer my concerns! Good ending.

Btw, did anyone else notice that she seemed a bit more glammed up in this ep, in particular the lipstick she had and the way her lips looked a lot fuller and more prominent in this ep?

Influx, if you need me to send you a tape, let me know. :)

R: Also looks like deliverance guy is not the top of the food chain.
Luigi Novi: They actually indicated that in Maternity Leave.

ScottN: Actually, it's not Zeke, either, it's "Zeke"...
Luigi Novi: Or, as the credits call him, Mr. Friendly.

MarkN: I hated seeing Hurley throwing all that food around cuz he thought the island was making him eat and stay fat...
Luigi Novi: I didn't like seeing that too, because the other Lostaways could've benefitted from. What is it with all that hording they do when they find the cache of Dharma food? Can't these people just share? With the exception of Sawyer, haven't they mostly been doing just that up until now?

Jesse: So, does anyone believe "Henry" when he says that he never punched in the numbers?
Luigi Novi: Actually, he confirmed what I already suspected when he told Locke that he had punched them in in Lockdown. I don't know why, but for some reason, I thought he was lying.

R: If you are who you say you are and if you really exist and I'm not lying in some bed somewhere making all this up and you arnt really the part of me that isnt a part of me....*sigh*.......... Did anyone see a bald guy in a bathrobe go by here? I think I need a drink...............
Luigi Novi: Nah, don't drink. Just return to your mathematical equations at Princeton University. You're a GENIUS, R!!! :)

By R on Saturday, April 08, 2006 - 10:57 am:

Nah I have to drink its the only way I can understand those mathematical equations.

Yeah I forgot about it in maternity leave being mentioned that he (indicating friendly zeke's boss) wouldnt be happy. Though Henry seems to be downright terrified of this big boss other. (If hes a short fat man in a white suit I'll be very disappointed, i think)

I'm not sure why people are hoarding other than they have been without the comforts of civilization for so long that they are scared of loosing them again or even sharing. Either that or they're just plain shallow and greedy.

And I hadntnoticed Libby being more glammed in this episode as I was distracted by her being more glammed in this episode.

By ScottN on Saturday, April 08, 2006 - 1:27 pm:

ScottN: Actually, it's not Zeke, either, it's "Zeke"...

Pick, pick, pick :O

Luigi Novi: Actually, he confirmed what I already suspected when he told Locke that he had punched them in in Lockdown. I don't know why, but for some reason, I thought he was lying.

If that's the case, then the implications for the whole code business are monumental. I wonder where they're going with that....

R: Nah I have to drink its the only way I can understand those mathematical equations.

R, not to get too offtopic here, but I'm curious about what you do. What's this about Princeton? Do you attend there or teach there?

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, April 10, 2006 - 12:51 am:

Read the last quote-and-response exchange from my last post above. R was making a reference to imaginary friends, much as experienced by Princeton mathematics professor John Nash, as seen in A Beautiful Mind. I carried on with that metaphor by mentioning Princeton and math. :)

By Influx on Monday, April 10, 2006 - 7:38 am:

Influx, if you need me to send you a tape, let me know.

Thanks, but I already read the synopsis. I'd still like to see it though. Any chance you can convert it to mp4? Even highly compressed, small window would be OK.

I see that ABC/Disney will be offering downloads of their episodes for free soon, but you won't be able to skip the commercials. Fine by me, if I can catch an episode I missed!

By R on Monday, April 10, 2006 - 7:41 am:

Sorry about that Jesse. I was running with the joke/reference Luigi made since I'm just a good ol redneck mechanic/farmer/computer geek/jack of several trades poor person from southwestern Ohio but not a mathematitian the best way I'd be able to understand higher mathmatics ala princeton level would be to be drunk and have some bottled inspiration.

Although his comment about me being a genius is rather correct, just not a methematical one.

By TomM on Monday, April 10, 2006 - 12:51 pm:

I think the reference was to the movie A Beautiful Mind, about real-life Princeton professor John Nash.

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - 12:01 am:

Um....I just said that exactly twelve hours before you did. (Down to the minute, in fact, it seems. :))

Influx: Thanks, but I already read the synopsis. I'd still like to see it though. Any chance you can convert it to mp4?
Luigi Novi: mp4? What in the world is that? Is that like the video equivalent of an mp3? Wow, I feel so ignorant. How about a vhs cassette? :)

By JM on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - 7:55 am:

Pretty much, yeah.

By Influx on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - 9:33 am:

So happy to introduce Luigi to a new term! I hadn't heard of mp4 until a few months ago -- then I got a PSP (PlayStation Portable). I had to learn about converting movies and videos to a format that will play on it. I found that it compresses the video enough to make it viable to send in email (or post on YouTube) much easier.

There are a few free conversion programs available (links are at home computer.)

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - 12:37 pm:

So would you like a VHS of the ep?

By ScottN on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - 5:44 pm:

MP4 refers to "MPEG Layer 4". It's a highly compressed video format, that's actually not particularly popular, due to patent encumbrances. AVI with the Indeo codec tends to be a bit more popular, and of course .MOV (QuickTime) is immensely popular, but it's patent encumbered as well, though all Mac users have a license included in their system cost.

By Influx on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 - 6:20 am:

So would you like a VHS of the ep?

Thanks, but I can always wait for the rerun.

By Captain Montgomery Scott. on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 - 8:27 pm:

VHS Tape? How Quaint.

By MarkN on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 - 10:31 pm:

MarkN They borrowed Gilligan's shaver, the professor's toolkit and Ginger's makeup case.

Oh, well, that explains it, then! Now I'm just wondering how those items ended up on this island, unless of course, it's the exact same "uncharted isle" as Gilligan and Co. were stranded on?

I also noticed that Libby was glammed up and looked much better for it cuz I for one was tired of seeing her all grungy, though she was still kinda sexy that way, anyhow. Let's also hope that she and Ana Lucia don't find a hidden stash of booze and a perfectly operable car somewhere on the island cuz they'll probably most likely just get smashed and then go off on a drunk driving spree!

And for anyone who doesn't get that reference it's about those two actresses having recently been busted for DUI some months ago.
