19. S.O.S.

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Lost: Season Two: 19. S.O.S.
Aired April 12

Writers: Steven Maeda & Leonard Dick
Director: Eric Laneuville

Guest Cast
L. Scott Caldwell: Rose
Sam Anderson: Bernard
Michael Emerson: Henry Gale
Wayne Pygram: Isaac

Distressed that the Lostaways seem to be accepting life on the island, Bernard tries to put together a large SOS sign in hopes of attracting the attention of a plane or satellite. Rose is against the idea, and a series of flashbacks reveal why. Meanwhile, Jack and Kate hike to the Others' "line in the sand" in hopes of trading Henry for Walt.

Rose and Bernard backstory

Notes:
-Before coming to the island, Rose had cancer. Apparently, the island has cured her.
-Rose knows about Locke's pre-crash state.
-Michael returns at the end of this episode.
-According to Bernard, they've been on the island for about two months.
-Mr. Eko and Charlie are building a church
-Unanswered Questions: Did the island cure Rose's cancer? If so, how? Why is Henry toying with Locke?

Thoughts:
-I liked this one. It's interesting to get some backstory on a couple of minor characters. And the return of the episode-ending music montage! Yay! We don't need a stinkin' CD player. I wonder if there are any AA batteries in that hatch, though.
-Michael's back! About time, I'd say.
-I think I can live with never seeing Henry smile like that again. That was kind of creepy.
-Being a huge Farscape fan, I would've liked to see more Wayne. Oh well.
-It seems we won't be getting a new episode next week. Darn.

Well this one was rather interesting. I'm not sure what to say about it other than they certainly hit the emotion buttons kinda hard in places.

So Rose knows about Locke's disability. Made her comment about moving rather interesting, especially since they showed that before the flashback)

I wonder where they are going with this healing energy thing and Eko building a church?

Speakign of building Bernard is right it does seem like everyone is just basically moving in and setting up housekeeping. Not that I probably wouldnt do the same in their place but still you would think that there might have been some interest in building a sign or otherwise exploring the options or have they all given up hope and that happened off screen.

I did like Freckles saying she would have told Jack about the other hatch when he let her back into the club.

Nice move Freckles. See a doll in the wilds and pick it up. Obviously not paranoid enough. And Bernard definately needs to learn to relax a bit.

I'm glad that even secondary characters like Rose and Bernard are getting flashback episodes, but I wonder when we're going to see Libby's, given that she's a main character. Hopefully we'll find out why she was in the hospital with Hurley, and whether or not she really is a shrink.

I couldn't tell what Jin was saying (my Korean is a little rough), but it seemed to echo my thoughts that making the SOS letters first (with one line of rocks) was more practical than starting with a three-width at the bottom of one letter. At least you'd have the letters there sooner, and could add to them as needed. Still, I think the sign was a good idea, and (bad management issues aside) I'd think some of the other Lostaways would continue it after he decided not to do it.

Maybe they should have used burning logs instead? (But then, Hurley would have tripped over some of them to make it read "SOL" instead. :) )

Since I missed last week's ep, and the conclusion of the previous one established that "Henry" was in fact lying, why are they still calling him Henry?

As time stretches (two months on the island vs. two years in "real time") I wonder if we will start seeing anachronisms, like a reference to something they couldn't know about at the time (e.g. like saying something about an I-Pod. Did they exist when the show started?)

Because they don't know what else to call him, and I think he said they might as well keep calling him that.

e.g. like saying something about an I-Pod. Did they exist when the show started?

Yes. iPods have been out for about 3-4 years.

Re: iPod. Earliest references I can find to it are 2001.

Influx, Henry asked Locke to keep calling him that because he had gotten used to it.
