After having a strange dream, Eko has Locke take him to to area of the island marked by the question mark. There they get a whole new set of answers and questions. In the hatch, Jack does what he can for Libby, but her time grows short, and Michael can only hope she goes before she tells everyone what he's done. In flashback, Mr. Eko must investigate a woman's claim that her daughter came back from the dead.

Mr. Eko backstory II

Notes
-Libby dies from her gunshot wounds at the end of this episode. And we didn't even learn her last name. She also never had an episode centered around her.
-Of the original five tailies encountered by Michael, Jin, and Sawyer, only two (Bernard and Eko) are now with the Lostaways.
-Henry has escaped.
-Eko's dream at the beginning of the episode hints at what happens to the Swan when the timer reaches 00:00.
-Eko and Locke discover that the question mark is another hatch, the Pearl. This hatch is a monitoring station that observes the other hatches. The Pearl itself is (or was) also under observation. The only hatch camera that appears to be operating is the Swan's.
-"Dr. Marvin Candle" introduces himself as "Dr. Mark Wickmund" in the Pearl's orientation video. He appears to have two working arms, as well.
-Numbers sighting: It's hard to tell, but the fake passport that Eko uses appears to list his birthdate as August 23 (appears to me to be 1968) (8/23), the issue date as April 16, 2004 (04/16/04) and an expiration date of April 15, 2014 (04/15/14). That gives us 4, 8, 15, 16, and 23.
-Eko asks Locke if he'd like to watch the orientation video again, similar to what Locke said when he watched the Swan's orientation
-Eko meets the psychic who told Claire to take Flight 815. He admits to Eko that he is a fraud.
-Dr. Candle/Wickmund mentions a "Pala Ferry", presumably a ferry that takes the observers off of the island, or somewhere else on it. Maybe even the Others' boat. Interestingly, neither Eko nor Locke seem to note this.
-Interestingly, one of the extras on the Season 2 DVD has a previously unseen clip of the conversation between Eko and the psychic, Richard. In it, Richard tells Eko that a couple in L.A. paid him $16,000 (Number sighting) to convince a pregnant girl to board a plane. Seeing as this was never aired, it's hard to say if it's meant to be taken seriously.
-According to the official podcast, one of the cigarettes on the table in the Pearl is still burning.
-Lostaway Count: Libby's death makes 44.
-Unanswered Questions: Where does the pneumatic tube lead? Who is surveilling the Pearl hatch? Is Dr. Wickmund a different man than Dr. Candle? What are the nature of Eko's dream? And Locke's? Where is Pala Ferry? What are the barracks? Did Charlotte have contact with Yemi when she appeared to have died? Who left the cigarette behind in the Pearl?

For anyone interested, Michael Ausiello interviewed Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse about Ana's death and Michelle Rodriguez's departure from the show. Some interesting stuff there. You can check it out here:

Hmmm....

**SPOILERS***

Well, it appears that the John Locke has completely lost his faith in the island and its purpose for him. The slow, painful transformation of Locke from a purposeful, hopeful, and capable character into a man plagued by doubts and insecurities is complete. Gone is the hunter and tracker of the first season, replaced with a man who seems to hate his lot in life. Of course, that's just my opinion.

I'm sure everyone noticed that "Dr. Marvin Candle" gave us a completely different name. Not sure which one is real. And I'm not sure I buy his explanation on the orientation tape that what's going on in the other hatches is merely a psychological test. The fact that "Dr. Candle" (sorry, I didn't catch the name he used here) stresses that the Pearl operators don't need to know what those in the other hatches are doing suggests that it isn't merely nonsense aimed at test the inhabitants of those hatches. In fact, I suspect that it's all part of the "incident" that "Dr. Candle" alluded to in the missing footage tha Eko recovered from the Tailies' hatch. Why else would they have someone watch every occurrence in the hatches and submit detailed reports? I think that it's part of the precautions that Hanso is/was taking, having people monitor the goings-on of the hatches 24 hours a day. Only, being cautious, they invent some b.s. reason for why the other hatches are being watched. That way, the operators in the Pearl don't get too curious about what's going on.

Did "Dr. Candle" mention a ferry off the island?

By ScottN on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 12:20 am:

By the way, I saw the commercial, but didn't write down the website. What was the new Hanso website in the commercial?

By R on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 12:53 am:

Blown up from waht I can tell. All I get is 404 not found, or a DNS error or 403 forbidden. Maybe thats just from being on dial up though.

And yes Candle mentioned a ferry taking people off island to the barracks.

By Influx on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 6:54 am:

If the Pearl site was the surveillance site, why did it have a camera itself? Granted, it was not hidden as Locke spotted it right away.

Is it really easier to climb holding an axe handle rather than using your hands to grip the vines/roots? Seems like your danger of slipping is much higher.

I think the website was www.sublymonal.com, but I will be corrected shortly if that is wrong! :)

I forgot to replay the quick cut scene in Eko's flashback. I couldn't quite tell if it was all stuff we'd seen before, or at least in that episode.

By Influx on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 8:38 am:

Another thought. Why do they keep saying they need to "push the button?" To enter The Numbers the final act is to press the Execute key. I could see if it was a big round red button they had to push, but I have never referred to "pushing" either a key or a "button" on my keyboard. I guess it's BISC. (Because It Sounds Cool).

By Influx on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 8:42 am:

BTW, the Hanso ad was "Paid for by Sprite". Perhaps that's where the subLYMONal comes in? Remember the "Sprite has lymon" ad campaign?

By Influx on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 12:16 pm:

I haven't seen the web page yet, but I understand it has a flash card that says "OBEY".

...your thirst, perhaps? (Another Sprite ad campaign.)

By ScottN on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 12:19 pm:

AFAICT, it's just the flash OBEY.

By Josh M on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 12:20 pm:

The new website seems a little more sinister than the last. It does give you a code word, though.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 12:35 pm:

Can't believe how many times I was totally off in this episode.
I was thinking that when Locke and Eko discovered the surveilance cameras, that they would find a recording showing Michael shooting Ana and Libby. Buy nada.

Then I thought that in her last breath, Libby would tell Hurley that Mike shot her, leaving Hurley the only one who knew the truth. But then she just died after merely saying his name.

Then I figured, during the ep's last couple of shots, that something would pop on the computer, like Walt saying that he was coming home, or something.

SIX DEGREES OF LOST: The Australian psychic who counseled Claire in Raised by Another was encountered by Eko.

By Influx on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 2:09 pm:

Is it relevant that the orientation speaker ended with "Thank you" and "Namaste"?

By R on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 4:09 pm:

Well on Sublymonal.com if you click on one of the lighted windows often enough or at the right time or somethign they will turn greenish white and glow brightly. Either that or it just happened at the same time as I had waited for a bit. I dunno.

As for climbing with the ax. It depends on how dry and strong your hands are. You can wedge the ax head into cracks and grooves in the cliff face and then use it as leverage or an arm extender to get a better grip placement. Or if need be as a tool to create a handhold.

By Josh M (Joshm) on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 4:22 pm:

I'm stopping this before it starts. R, I edited out the last part of your message. I'm not having the discussion between you and Luigi spill over onto my boards. You guys can either be nice to each other here, or you won't be interacting here. This is only a warning, not an accusation.

As for the sublymonal site, I read somewhere that the number of clicks on each screen corresponds to the Numbers.

By R on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 4:44 pm:

And as for the clicks that might make sense. I didnt count the clicks as I just started hammering away on the mouse after I got a bit impatient. (Sort of like when I am on the phone with a computer and start hammering the 0 key to get a human or at least mess their systems up. I managed to crash the system at one bill collector by doing that. That was sweet.)

By ScottN on Thursday, May 11, 2006 - 9:21 pm:

I did hit sublymonal.com, and it is the magic numbers which make it go green. It then changes screen to give the "code word".

By Influx on Friday, May 12, 2006 - 8:04 am:

Does anyone have a clue as to what the significance of the title is?

By R on Friday, May 12, 2006 - 8:24 am:

Title of the website or title of the episode?

If its the episode then the question mark of reference is from the map on the blast door.

If its the title of the site then i got no clue other than perhaps a play on the word subliminal.

By Influx on Friday, May 12, 2006 - 9:41 am:

The episode. I thought the "21." was part of the title! I see now that it is just the number in the episode list. I would have gotten the sole "?" otherwise.

By R on Friday, May 12, 2006 - 2:05 pm:

Ah I see now. Yeah from a certian POV it does seem like it might be part of the title.

One thing I was thinking about today (since i didn't have much else to do today....) is that Hurley is just getting totally Bslapped. I mean here he is just getting the hot chick that he likes to like him back, when blammo she takes two to the gut and croaks. That just hurts. And somehow I get the feeling that Hurley is gonna be blaming himself for this ("if I hadn't forgotten the blankets") for some time to come (wonder if Dave will be back) unless seomthign happens.

One thing that Michael is going to hope never happens is that Hurley never finds out that hes the one that shot Libby. I mena yeah Hurley is this sweet, loveable, huggable laid back huggy bear but I get the feeling you trip his switch he is gonna go stone cold killa on ya in a heartbeat. I mean look at what happened to Sawyer just for razzing him. Michael killed the girl he was sweet on what do you think he's gonna do about that?

By TomM on Saturday, May 13, 2006 - 10:01 am:

Speaking of Hurley, why did it take a whole day and a night before he went to find out what happened to her? They were going on a picnic, and she just popped into the hatch to get a blanket. But most of this ep occurred at night, and Hurley didn't show up until morning.

By R on Saturday, May 13, 2006 - 10:26 am:

Not sure. Maybe he went up the beach and started to get thigns ready for her? Maybe he had a bad case of doubt and went wandering? Maybe he was just being really, really patient? That is a good question though.

By ScottN on Saturday, May 13, 2006 - 4:09 pm:

Though the time frame in general is bad.

Libby goes to get the blankets in afternoon.
Michael shoots Ana, Libby and himself, letting Henry out.

By my count it should still be afternoon.

Jack, Locke, Sawyer, Eko, and Kate come in, and it's already night?

And Tom has a point, what the heck was Hurley doing?

By Sicily1918 on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 - 6:06 pm:

Regarding www.thehansofoundation.org

1). If you wait long enough, the clock at the top-left changes from numbers (24-hour format) to OB:EY -- you can then click the clock and it also takes you to http://www.sublymonal.com/

2). Unlocking sublymonal's six 'gates' gives the code "Heir Apparent"

3). The RSS feed at the bottom takes you to a quick-link page.

4). The OLD website had links for all their current projects and below the last visible link was an invisible one -- The Dharma Initiative; it seems to be gone now (or it's hidden elsewhere).

Does anyone have the login/password to get info on Hanso's board of directors? And if so, how'd you find it?

By Influx on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 8:17 am:

I thought it odd that there appeared to be only one screen for each site. The Dharma camera was focused on the living quarters only, and not on the halls or what would seem to be very important, the computer room!

If there was an ability to switch camera views on one screen, it seems this would be much more difficult to "record everything that happens".
