While Kate and Sayid try to free Jack from the Others, Locke has his own goal. In flashback, one of Locke's biggest mysteries is brought to light.

Locke backstory VI

Notes:
-Locke is paralyzed after his father throws him out of an eight story window.
-Danielle gets a glimpse of her daughter and Sayid tells Alex that her mother is still alive.
-Locke blows up the submarine, apparently the Others only way of getting off of the island.
-Somehow, the Others have Anthony Cooper captive.
-Locke's orderly may be the originator of his "Don't tell me what I can't do" phrase and mentality. He tells Locke, "You fell eight stories out of a window and survived. I don't want to hear about what you can't do."
-In an interesting anagram, Anthony Cooper, Adam Seward can be rearranged to form "Sawyer, the con man, a poor dad." Gotta love Lost fans.
-Ben confirms that the fail-safe discharge, which he refers to as "the anomaly", knocked out the Others' communications with the outside world, a fact hinted at in Every Man for Himself.
-Ben notes that about 80 days have passed since Flight 815 went down. Two weeks have gone by since the events in Live Together, Die Alone.
-The latest book in Sawyer's library is The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. Good luck to him.

-Unanswered Questions: How and why did the Others get Anthony Cooper? Is the "magic box" mentioned by Ben something that's actually substantial? If so, what is it?

Great lines:

"We have two giant hamsters running on wheels in our underground lair."

"Because I'm in a wheelchair, and you're not."

"No, we don't have a code for 'There's a man hiding in my closet holding a gun on my daughter.'"

So who or what is the Man from Tallahassee?

By ScottN on Thursday, March 22, 2007 - 12:04 am:

Never mind, I just figured it out. Duh!

By Josh M on Thursday, March 22, 2007 - 12:22 pm:

For some reason, Locke is soaking wet after he plants the C4. Did he fall in when he was getting out of the sub?

By ScottN on Thursday, March 22, 2007 - 2:32 pm:

I figured it was sweat.

It's nice to have [something resembling] the old Locke back, after the wimpification he went through.

From the notes: Somehow, the Others have Anthony Cooper captive.

We don't know that for sure yet. Ben had just been telling Lock of a box that gave you whatever you most wanted it to. Or it could be the shapeshifter.

One nit: John called Ben 'Ben' and not 'Henry.' By time this happened though (I was waiting for it), enough time had passed that it could have been explained an off-camera exchange, but it would have been a nice touch if he called him the wrong name at first.

Yes we do know that for sure. The closing shot was Locke looking at Cooper tied up and gagged.

By TomM on Thursday, March 22, 2007 - 5:49 pm:

Yes, the captive in the final scene was played by Kevin Tighe, who usually plays Cooper. Kevin's point, however, is that it might be a manifestation of the Island and/or the Monster, like Kate's horse, the cat Nadia, Jack's father, backward-speaking Walt, etc. It would be a dirty trick by the writers, but there is plenty of reason to wonder.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Thursday, March 22, 2007 - 8:05 pm:

Thanks, Tom. Yes, I did mean it could have been the shapeshifter (if there even is such a thing) taking on Cooper's form, or some other mysterious Island thing.

But after posting that, I realised Ben's comment about wanting to see the man from Tallahassee somewhat undermines that explanation.

I do think it really is John's father. I'm just a little less sure than everyone else is.

By Josh M on Thursday, March 22, 2007 - 8:05 pm:

Well, until there's some reason to believe that it's not him I'll keep it the way it is. Though, truth be told, if it turns out to be someone or something else, I'll just note that in the episode where we learn it.

By ScottN on Thursday, March 22, 2007 - 10:18 pm:

Yeah, Kevin, that was my self-aimed "Duh" earlier about the Man from Tallahassee.

By nav1g8r on Friday, March 23, 2007 - 12:25 pm:

perhaps the monster, the cat, the horse etc. is manifested in the minds of who ever sees it. Locke stated that when he saw the monster (in season 1) that it was "beautiful" (I think?!) but to looked like a black cloud from the point of view of the viewer. Eko also saw the monster and it had images from his past inside it.

dunno really. Lost is getting more and more confusing the more I watch it...

By Kevin (Kevin) on Friday, March 23, 2007 - 6:12 pm:

That was my point, especially as Benn had just been talking about a box that shows you whatever you want to see.

But if it isn't really his father, I don't expect they'll reveal that for a long time.

By Josh M on Sunday, March 25, 2007 - 12:27 pm:

Since our heroes are hanging around Otherville, I wonder if we're going to see Karl pop up sometime soon looking for Alex.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Sunday, March 25, 2007 - 8:33 pm:

Um, Scott? So who is the Man from Talahassee?

nav1g8r: perhaps the monster, the cat, the horse etc. is manifested in the minds of who ever sees it
Luigi Novi: Yeah, but when Kate saw the horse, Sawyer saw it too. In your theory, does customize its appearance to each individual? Cuz in that case, it didn't.

By ScottN on Sunday, March 25, 2007 - 8:38 pm:

Luigi:

HIGHLIGHT TO READ
I'm assuming it's Cooper.

By Nav1g8r on Monday, March 26, 2007 - 1:27 pm:

Luigi: That is that theory totally blown out of the water (a bit like the sub :-))

I thought that the Man From Talahassee was the answer given by ScottN also.
Perhaps the room of requirement does show whatever Ben wants you to see (and not the person) and Lock is managing to control the island somehow. (Ben did say that he had lived there all his life and had to convince the other "others" to stay.)
