Nikki emerges from the jungle and falls down dead. When Paulo is discovered in the same condition, the rest of the Lostaways speculate on the cause, forcing a few old secrets to come out. Flashbacks give us the story of Nikki and Paulo, and the shocking events that led them to this point.

Nikki and Paulo backstory

Notes:
-Sun finds out that Charlie and Sawyer were behind the attack on her in The Long Con.
-It seems that Nikki and Paulo discovered the drug plane and the Pearl before anyone else. They, of course, kept this information to themselves.
-During a trip to the Pearl, Paulo inadvertantly spies on a conversation between Ben and Juliet. Apparently, the Others used the Pearl to spy on the occupants of the Swan.
-It turns out that Paulo wasn't going to the bathroom in The Cost of Living, but was retrieving a bag of diamonds that he hid there.
-It sounds like the monster may have been partly responsible for the spiders' coming to Nikki
-The official Lost podcast on March 21, 2008 confirms that the spiders attracted to dead Medusa spider used by Nikki are indeed manifestations of the monster.
-The entire (living) main cast makes an appearance in this episode. Even a couple dead ones (Shannon and Boone) show up.
-Lostaway Count: 40

-Unanswered Questions: Was it the monster that sent the spiders after Nikki or just the female spider's powerful pheromones?

W........o...........w. I was NOT expecting that ending. I haven't been that surprised by the show in a while. All I have to say is, it's a fitting end for those two pieces of slime.

Weird!

Wow. I just saw the episode right now. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this episode that much, and for a very good reason: When flipping through the new issue of TV Guide today, I came across a bit about the episode's ending. My immediate reaction was, "AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!"

But in seeing the episode, it wasn't ruined for me. Although the producers admitted in the TVG bit that the characters were ill-conceived, they decided to let them go out with a bang, and indeed they did. In killing them off, they gave them a nice backstory and a bit of depth, something the creators have always been good at, even with supporting characters.

The structure of the episode as well, showing where Paolo and Nikki were during various highlights of the series' run, was a nice touch, and if the scene with Paolo coming out of the bathroom was origingally written in that prior episode with this one in mind, it shows how how far ahead the writers had this episode's story in mind, though it'd be ironic, given that the first episode in which they had anything to do ended up foreshadowing their very last.

And wow, I hadn't even noticed what a hottie Kiele Sanchez is!

I'm a little skeptical that none of the survivors at that funeral would object to dumping the diamonds in the grave. I know they're useless on the island, but there still has to be some hope. Claire was all hot about birds just last week. That's like a day ago on this show.

Whatever clued you in to that I totally missed. Was there a distant sound effect or something?

It was the pheromones from the dead spider. Arzt told her about that.

Yes.

This is why I'm even more saddened by Nikki/Kiele Sanchez's departure.

I mean, Locke's legs were repaired, no one gets sick, Mikhail keeps coming back from the dead, etc. Can't the creators establish a new premise that would allow Nikki to come back from the dead? Y'know something about the island not liking it when really hot women who look great in bikinis die, and making them come back, or something? :-)
