Your Questions... Answered!

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Lost: The Island of Mystery: Your Questions... Answered!
Over the past three years, Lost has brought up a lot of questions. In my duties as moderator, I try to document as many of these as I can to allow us to keep track of what mysteries around story, setting, and characters pop up with each episode. As time has passed, many questions have been answered. This thread will (hopefully) work as a documentation of what we have learned and what the show has yet to show us. Right now, it's really just a test to see if I can make this work. Obviously, there will be SPOILERS since this thread is all about them. If I miss any questions, post it. So, without further ado:

Season One

Pilot
  1. Where are they? An island that is apparently in the south Pacific. The island itself is an enigma, seems to be hidden from the world, and may have a will of its own. (See various episodes). It is the center of a Source of special light and power, a light that apparently touches all life. This is what seems to make it special. (See "Across the Sea")
  2. Where did the transmission come from? There is a radio tower on the island that is transmitting the message. (See "Solitary" and "Through the Looking Glass".)
  3. Why is there a polar bear on the island? The result of the DHARMA Initiative's testing to make the animal able to survive in multiple environments. The bear probably came from the Hydra. (See "Orientation", "A Tale of Two Cities", and The Lost Experience)
  4. What is the huge people-killing thing in the jungle? The man in black and the twin brother of island protector Jacob. He manifests and attacks in the form of black smoke. His goal since life is to leave the island, while Jacob, knowing his transformation has twisted him, keeps him trapped there. (See "Across the Sea")
  5. Why was Kate in custody? She killed her father (See "What Kate Did")
  6. What is Locke's secret? Before the plane crashed, he was in a wheelchair (See "Walkabout")
  7. What caused the plane to crash? Desmond failed to enter the numbers in the Swan, causing the electromagnetic field near the station to build up, apparently bringing the plane down (See "Live Together, Die Alone").
  8. To what was the transmission referring (It killed them)? Unknown. Rousseau refers to it as "the sickness" though there's little evidence that this exists. (See "Solitary"). It seems that she might have bee referring to the monster affecting her teammates and changing them, a similar claim later made of Claire and Sayid. (See "This Place is Death" and Season 6)

Sayid is with Jin and Sun at the moment and they turn out okay. Desmond does take care of most of his vision-related problems, including finding Naomi and mostly does fend for himself throughout the season. 3. Did Desmond experience his own vision? Can he see the future now? He sure can. (See "Flashes Before Your Eyes")

  1. What killed the Ajira survivors? Unknown. Maybe it was Widmore's people.
  2. What does Widmore have locked up? Desmond. (See "The Package")
  3. How is the man in black planning to get that plane to fly? Turns out it wasn't all that damaged in the landing at all. Some hydraulics simply needed to be taped up. (See "The End")

Ab Aerterno

The Package
  1. How can Desmond help Widmore stop the Man in Black? Desmond has the ability to remove the Source's pillar and survive. While having devastating effects on the island, it also makes the MiB mortal. (See "The End")
  2. Why does Zoe need information on the island's electromagnetic pockets? They were probably looking for the Source.

Happily Ever After
  1. What is the sacrifice that Widmore wants Desmond to make? He probably believes Desmond might die when he destroys the island. He's nearly right. (See "The End")
  2. What did Eloise Widmore believe Desmond wasn't ready for? Moving on. (See "The End")
  3. How and when did Charles and Eloise leave the Island?Their alternate selves didn't, really, since that universe is simply a purgatory for those who haven't quite "moved on" yet. (See "The End")

Everybody Loves Hugo
  1. Why did Desmond hit Locke with his car? Was this his plan to help him see the other timeline? Apparently. It seems to have partially worked. (See "The Candidate")

The Last Recruit
  1. What did Sayid do with Desmond? He let him live. (See "The Candidate")
  2. Why did Widmore go back on his deal with Sawyer? All that matters is stopping Locke and I doubt having a wild card like Sawyer is something he wants to risk.
  3. Why was sideways-Sun afraid of Locke? Has she seen the other timeline? Yeah, she was seeing flashes. They become more clear in "The End"

The Candidate
No New Questions

Across The Sea
  1. How did the woman know so much information about the cave and the island? What was she? She was the island's former protector. She might have been there for some time and known the knowledge she needed for the job.
  2. What was the manifestation of Jacob's and MiB's dead mother? It's likely that like Hurley, MiB can see dead people.
  3. How did the woman kill all of the people and bury the wells? As the island's protector, she might have had some powers that helped her do so. Or she's really sneaky.
  4. Why did she thank MiB for killing her? It seemed like her entire purpose was to pass on the job. Like Alpert after her, she probably grew tired of living eternally.
  5. Who finished the donkey wheel's construction? The MiB? Unknown, but probably. Or he manipulated someone else to do it.

What They Died For
  1. Who rescued Desmond from the well? Rose and Bernard, who were transported to 2007 along with the other Lostaways back in "LA X". (See "The End")
  2. Did Richard survive? He sure did. (See "The End")
  3. Is Jack's neck wound significant?Yep. It was a clue that the sideways timeline is actually a post-death purgatory where the Lostaways met before "letting go" and moving on. (See "The End")

The End

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Sunday, March 29, 2009 - 6:19 pm:

The Beginning of the End #10 has been answered.

So has Ji Yeon #1.

As for Something Nice Back Home #2 & 3, it was indeed Aaron, right?

Regarding Cabin Fever #1, it was because that during all the time jumps, Locke himself told Alpert about when they would "first" meet, right?

There’s No Place Like Home, Part 1 #1 has been answered, as have There’s No Place Like Home, Part 2 #1, 4, & 7 - 10.

Because You Left #2 and Jughead #1 have been answered, as has This Place Is Death #1 (at least in a general way).

316 #6 - 8 and 12 & 13 were answered by LeLeur and Namaste.

In answer to LeFleur #3 & 4, I think they just proved their value to DHARMA, and I think they stayed because they had nothing to go back to in 1974, as they would both be kids in that year. In last week's episode in particular, Sawyer tells Jack that he carved out a life for himself there as a man people look up to and respect.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Sunday, March 29, 2009 - 6:20 pm:

Btw, you formatted the last three questions under the episode ? to be as small as the answers. :-)

By ScottN on Sunday, March 29, 2009 - 7:20 pm:

Confirmed Dead #2, part 1: Tunisia is the other end of the "wormhole" (for lack of a better word).

A Tale of Two Cities #8: Confirmed yes.

By ScottN on Saturday, April 18, 2009 - 12:32 pm:

Jughead #6: answered in "Dead is Dead".

"LAX" is one word. It's the 3-letter code for Los Angeles International Airport.

The Substitute, #5: In Dr. Linus, Roger mentions that they "had to leave" the Island/Dharma Initiative.

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, May 13, 2010 - 6:04 pm:

Wikipedia has it as "LA X". So does Lostpedia. I wonder what their source was for that?

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, May 13, 2010 - 6:04 pm:

Imdb has it with the space too.

By Josh M on Thursday, May 13, 2010 - 8:07 pm:

Yeah, the title has the space there. I'm guessing they got it from the press releases. I don't know if that was meant to imply the alternate universe or what.

By ScottN on Thursday, May 13, 2010 - 11:24 pm:

OK, I give. The official ABC Lost site (http://www.abc.com/lost) spells it as "LA X" as well.

I wonder why?

"# Is Sayid really infected with something?
# If so, what? Probably not literally, though he was influenced by the Man in Black's promise to bring him back to Nadia. (See "Sundown", "The Last Recruit", and "The Candidate")"

I don't think this is correct- he spoke of losing his ability to feel emotions... I'd say he was really infected with something, same as Claire.

"To which Kwon does 42 refer?"
I guess we'll never know, now, unless it's their daughter... :-(

"Who is coming to the island?"
"Who does Jacob want to come to the Island?"
This one's answered- Whitmoore.

Here's a question to add... why could someone (Sawyer, I think?) see Jacob-as-a-boy if he's dead?

By Josh M on Friday, May 14, 2010 - 3:03 pm:

I'm not sure I buy that Claire was ever really "infected" either.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Friday, May 14, 2010 - 5:20 pm:

"Who does Jacob want to come to the Island?"
This one's answered- Whitmoore.

Probably, but it could have been Desmond.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Friday, May 14, 2010 - 5:32 pm:

On further reflection, I have a strong suspicion that the someone Jacob wanted to come to the island hasn't arrived yet.

By ScottN on Friday, May 14, 2010 - 10:26 pm:

Aaron?

By Josh M on Friday, May 14, 2010 - 11:42 pm:

Walt?

By Kevin (Kevin) on Saturday, May 15, 2010 - 2:13 am:

I don't know who. I just don't think it's Widmore. Widmore would have already been practically there by that point. A lighthouse is fairly useless to a submarine, Widmore must have known where the island had moved itself to, and I don't really see why Jacob would want Widmore there as he seems just to want to exploit the island. (Though as I said above, maybe it was Desmond he wanted there, in which case I'm wrong and the person has arrived.)

But then, Jacob told that to Hurley so he'd take Jack to the lighthouse, so the whole thing could have bee a lie and there was no one that he wanted to come. He shrugged it off with a 'I guess he'll have to find another way,' but that doesn't prove he wasn't lying.

By Andrew Gilbertson (Zarm_rkeeg) on Sunday, May 23, 2010 - 11:50 am:

Seems like it was Widmore, as per "What They Died For."

By Josh M on Sunday, May 23, 2010 - 11:59 am:

Yep, you were right.

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 - 7:18 pm:

They were making it all up as they went along, because they never thought the series would be picked up, much less last more than a season.

Duh.

For some reason, I had trouble getting the link through, and not because of the profanity near the end of it (which you have to spell out correctly), but because it perceived nesting tags to be "inside" of it when I tried using the topurl and newurl tags.

By TomM on Thursday, September 29, 2011 - 3:58 pm:

Actually, it looks like it was the profanity that was the problem. When the censor replaced the offensive word with a stream of bullets and tagged it as "\red{...}", you wound up with nested tags

By TomM on Thursday, September 29, 2011 - 4:06 pm:

BTW --

The page you tried to link to has only a brief excerpt from the original Rueters report on the interview. The full article can be found here.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Thursday, September 29, 2011 - 4:17 pm:

I read it a few days ago, but couldn't you have usd tinyurl or something similar to make it work?

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, September 29, 2011 - 6:57 pm:

When the censor replaced the offensive word with a stream of bullets and tagged it as "...", you wound up with nested tags.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Right!

God, it was KILLING me not knowing what I was doing wrong!

Tinyurl didn't occur to me. But thanks for reminding me about it, Kev.
