"Locke" comes across Sawyer and offers to give him answers about why Sawyer is on the island, apparently in an attempt to enlist Sawyer's assistance.

In the alternate timeline, Locke lives a different life with a still living Helen, getting fired from his job and setting him on a path that takes him to a few familiar faces.

Notes:
-Locke episode
-In the alternate timeline, Helen is still alive and is set to marry John in a month.
-Helen mentions inviting Locke's father to their wedding, indicating either he is on much better terms with Cooper in this timeline or that she simply believes they are.
-This version of Locke comes across Hurley, Rose, and eventually Ben. Ben works as European history teacher at a high school where Locke is subbing. Rose's subordinate also appeared in the original timeline, as a fortune teller in Tricia Tanaka is Dead.
-Ilana claims the man in black is recruiting people and that he is stuck in Locke's image.
-Jacob had a cave in the island's cliffs with the names of many of the island's residents on it. The MIB/"Locke" claims that the names were candidates to replace him as protector of the island.
-Numbers sightings: Several names from the survivors of Flight 815 correspond to the numbers
4 - Locke
8 - Hurley
15 - Sawyer
16 - Sayid
23 - Jack
42 - Either Jin or Sun

Apparently Jacob brought them all to the island because they are candidates
-Jacob's cave had a scale in it, balanced with a white rock and a black rock. The MIB threw the white rock into the ocean, reflecting Jacob's death.
-The MIB sees a blonde, bloody boy that warns him he broke the rules. Sawyer can see him, too.
-The MIB utters the repeated Locke line "Don't tell me what I can't do!"

Unanswered Questions: Why did Ilana take Jacob's ashes? For what is the MIB recruiting? Is alternate Locke on good terms with his dad? How did he end up in a wheelchair in this timeline? How did Ben end up off of the island and back in the States? Who is the boy? What are the rules? To which Kwon does 42 refer? From what does Jacob need to protect the island? The MIB? Men like Widmore? Who is coming to the island?

What is alt-Ben doing at the school?

Young Ben (from the alt-timeline) was on the island when the nuke went off. Given that the island appears to have gone underwater as a result (see teaser to LAX part 1), and that Ben was a kid at the time, how did he get off the (sinking? sunken?) island to become a teacher?

Perhaps the sinking of the island wasn't instantaneous, but a slow process, that allowed the inhabitants time to evacuate.

Why isn't Kate listed as one of the numbered folk?

By Andrew Gilbertson (Zarm_rkeeg) on Thursday, February 25, 2010 - 8:13 am:

Because she sucks.
Oh, wait, you wanted an in-universe reason? :-)

By Josh M on Thursday, February 25, 2010 - 7:40 pm:

It might not just be her. Either Jin or Sun might not be listed either. Unless Kwon covers both of them.

While her name doesn't show up here, SPOILER for next episode: her name does show up at the lighthouse, at least according to Lostpedia, next to #51.

So, young boy... young/manifestation of Jacob?
What is the connection between Adam and Eve+Jacob/MIB? they both have the light/dark stones.

By ScottN on Thursday, May 06, 2010 - 1:43 pm:

Random rumination on why the alt-timeline seems to diverge BEFORE the bomb.

Because the island wasn't there, 815 didn't crash.
Because 815 didn't crash, the Lostaways didn't skip around in time, including the period pre-dating the bomb.
Because the Lostaways weren't there when Ben got hurt, Roger decided to leave with Ben pre-nuke.

Gotta love a paradox.

And mayhaps, due to their non-interference, the Incident was never stopped by detonating a nuke, and sunk the Island? (Meaning the nuke caused an alternate timeline where the island sunk specifically because the nuke never went off... WHOA!) :-)
