Widmore makes sure that Desmond is everything he hopes he is by forcing an electromagnetic event onto his son-in-law, "Flashes Before Your Eyes"-style.

In the other timeline, Desmond is Widmore's right hand man and is everything he's not in the original world, including not Penny's husband. This Desmond's world gets turned upside down when he encounters a certain drug-addicted rock bassist.

Notes:
-Desmond episode
-Like Flashes Before Your Eyes, Desmond takes another journey thanks to electromagnetic energy. This time he ends up in the alternate timeline.
-In the other timeline, Desmond works for Widmore and is pretty much everything he's not in the original timeline.
-He meets Claire and Hurley, has to look after Charlie, encounters Jack, meets Eloise Hawking/Widmore, has a nice heart to heart with Daniel Faraday/Widmore, and finally meets Penny in the same stadium the other him met Jack in Man of Science, Man of Faith and saw Penny again in Live Together, Die Alone
-His driver is George Minkowski, the radio operator aboard Widmore's freighter who died from the island's effects in The Constant.
-Alternate Desmond correctly guesses that Claire's unborn baby is a boy.
-Widmore offers Desmond MacCuthcheon whiskey, which he refused to do in Flashes Before Your Eyes.
-Alternate Daniel, Charlie, and Desmond all have seen flashes of the original timeline. Daniel when he saw Charlotte, Charlie when he almost died, and Desmond when Charlie made a familiar pose and again in the MRI machine.
-Desmond has an interesting reaction when the MRI technician mentions "pressing the button" in case he panics.
-Eloise seems to recognize Desmond and again seems to know more than she's letting on. In a reversal from Flashes Before Your Eyes, though, where she encouraged Desmond to reject his current reality since it wasn't what was meant to be, this Eloise tells Desmond to stop looking for whatever he's seeking and to accept the life he currently has.
-Eloise utters the phrase "what happened, happened".
-Alt-Desmond decides to let the Oceanic people see what he's seen.
-In the alternate timeline, Daniel is a classical pianist, something he had a gift for before his mother encouraged him to take up physics in The Variable.
Unanswered Questions:
What is the sacrifice that Widmore wants Desmond to make? What did Eloise Widmore believe Desmond wasn't ready for? How and when did Charles and Eloise leave the Island?

Hurley tells Desmond that their bags are at carousel 4, but when Desmond picks up his bag he is at carousel F-2.

I don't recall if that scene is in Los Angeles, but LAX does not label its luggage carousels with letters.
