Buffy moves to UPN!

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Buffy, The Vampire Slayer: Random Buffy Thoughts/Buffy Mortuary [Kitchen Sink] (( under construction )): Buffy moves to UPN!
By Spornan on Saturday, April 21, 2001 - 6:14 am:

Be warned, as I may actually vomit.

http://www.trektoday.com/news/210401_02.shtml

Buffy is moving to that spaceless vacuum of a network, UPN, for at least two years.

I'm in shock, and scared out of my mind. Either Buffy will make UPN better, or UPN will completely destroy the best show on television. Can UPN handle a show that has episodes like "Hush" or "The Body?"

Let's just hope they don't treat it like Voyager.

By Spornan the scared on Sunday, April 22, 2001 - 8:33 pm:

AAAHH!!! Someone please help me! I can't go through this alone!

By Dustin Westfall on Monday, April 23, 2001 - 2:36 pm:

Don't worry. According to Joss (via SciFi.com at this link: http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?2001-04/23/10.00.fandom), the move will have no effect on the stories or the series itself. Hopefully, UPN knows better. IMHO, UPN did nothing to Voyager; any issues are due to B&B.

Think of it this way, though: Now you can complain that Buffy is never shown at warp. :-)

By Spornan on Monday, April 23, 2001 - 6:48 pm:

I think I already did that once actually. :)

Think of it: We'll be subjected to the Random-Nose-Bump Demons! Oh the horror of it all!

By KAM on Tuesday, April 24, 2001 - 3:06 am:

I had heard rumors that it might move to Fox if WB couldn't come across with the green, but I hadn't heard about UPN until you started this thread, then today ET reported it was moving.

I wonder what this will do to Angel? Apparently it is not moving.
Will WB move Angel to 8?
Apparently this will end those 'special event' two-hour crossovers, but will there still be the occasional cameo?

Yes, you complained that Buffy wasn't moving at warp, why didn't Giles know everyone in the Scooby gang, & felt they should promote Zander. :)
Oh, those pesky Voices In Your Head.

By KAM on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 - 2:05 am:

The coming attractions said that next week will be the first of the four final episodes. Hmmmm, sounds like the WB is trying to make people think Buffy is ending & not moving to another network. I wonder why?

By MarkN on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 - 3:27 am:

When are we gonna get new boards for the eps that don't have them yet and the rest of the season's, too?

In the meantime, let's nitpick this week's ep, shall we? Ok, let's go! The moderator is welcome to transfer this post on the appropriate board when it's created for this ep, unless we'll just stick with this for now.

When we first see the Buffbot, she's slightly moving, and so is her dress as the camera pans upward from her feet. And, hey, how about Buffy going against her loathing for Spike and pretending to be the Buffbot and kissing the dude? Ok, so now who doesn't think that she's gonna have different feelings towards him, huh? Even if she doesn't, at least Spike got one tiny wish, a kiss from the real Buffster. Of course now he'll probably be even more of a pest with her.

By margie on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 - 11:29 am:

I liked the look on Spike's face when he realized it was the real Buffy kissing him. I could almost see the light bulb go on over his head!

By Josh M on Thursday, April 26, 2001 - 3:50 pm:

I know it gets cold in the desert at night, but I thought it was really funny to see Buffy walking around in the desert with the long coat she had on.

Anyway, UPN might pick Angel up if WB decides to cancel it.

By Oh the Humanity on Saturday, April 28, 2001 - 9:35 am:

UPN is contractually obliged to pick up Angel if the WB cancels it.

By Scott McClenny on Sunday, May 06, 2001 - 6:47 pm:

The question is WHEN is UPN going to put
Buffy in the schedule?
If they keep Special Section 2 on as a regular
series then it would make for a really good
complimentary series on Wednesdays,unless they
plan to return 7 Days to Wednesdays.
Of course with Voyager ending in a couple more
weeks this means that UPN will have a big hole
to fill which is probably why they decided to
go ahead and purchase Buffy from the WB in the
first place.

By JC on Monday, May 07, 2001 - 11:46 am:

UPN is not contractually obligated to take Angel. As long as the show is controlled by WB, how can anyone else have control over it?

Chances are, (and this is speculation) WB will cancel Angel because Angel doesn't carry the weight of Buffy and probably wouldn't survive without Buffy to lead up to it (even though earlier this season Angel was the superior show, IMHO). Then UPN would probably decide to pick it up. On the other hand, WB could conceiveably decide (out of sheer spite) to keep Angel and try to kill it by putting it in awkward time slots, but still preventing UPN from obtaining it.

By Spornan on Tuesday, May 08, 2001 - 7:49 am:

Everything I've read on the subject indicates that UPN has agreed to pick up Angel if it is cancelled by WB. Whether or not they are contractually obligated to do it is another story.

The WB has a few options, but I'm not sure how long their contract for Angel is. I would imagine that when it runs out, they are going to UPN. And I think rather than try to make money off Angel, try to kill angel, or try to keep Angel from UPN, the WB will just drop it altogether.

By JC on Monday, May 14, 2001 - 11:31 am:

Well, the WB decided to keep Angel (thus preventing UPN from creating a Buffy/Angel hour). And they're moving it to Mondays at 9 (the time slot Roswell has been having so much trouble with).

Roswell has been cancelled by WB, but talks are underway for the show to *possibly* move to UPN. So UPN might create a Buffy/Roswell night.

By Spornan on Monday, May 14, 2001 - 5:03 pm:

Well there goes any future crossovers.

By Oh the Humanity on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 8:09 am:

JC--

Part of the Contract with Buffy said that UPN would pick up Angel if it was cancelled.

Thus they are contractually obligated to do so.

And, just to note, FOX controls Angel, since it produces it.

By JC on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 9:08 am:

Fox OWNS and produces Angel. But WB controls it (by contract). Otherwise, I think Fox (and Whedon) would move Angel along with Buffy.

And I would like to see the part of the contract you're talking about, if you have it.

Of course, the show hasn't been cancelled (and is instead being sabotaged), so the point is moot.

By Spornan on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 12:29 pm:

I've heard from several sources (Trekweb, IGN) that the contract with Buffy/UPN requires UPN to pick up Angel if WB cancels it. Too bad Angel is a good enough show that it's ratings won't require it to be cancelled for a long time. I'm gonna miss the Tuesday night power-hour of Buffy/Angel.

By Oh the Humanity on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 8:11 am:

JC--

I quite agree that the WB's contract concerning Angel gives the WB exclusive rights to show it. But, if FOX wanted to do so, they could dissolve the contract (probably at great expense, so they wouldn't) and sign one with UPN--that's what I meant by FOX controls Angel.

By S.Na on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 - 12:08 am:

Any idea if either network will be showing reruns of season five this summer? I missed most of it, and would love to see it.

By Brian Fitzgerald on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 - 1:20 pm:

I'd imagine that WB will because they still have season 5 untill the new season starts.

By S. Na on Friday, May 25, 2001 - 6:44 pm:

In case anyone else is wondering, I have an answer to my above question: WB will be running season five through the summer (on Mondays), and FOX will be stripping the entire series on FX next season.

By Matt Pesti on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 11:33 am:

FOX controls Angel. More than likely the only control the WB has over Angel is time solt and censorship.

A contract can only be canceled by consent of both parties. FOX can only withdraw if the WB lats it.

By Matt Pesti on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - 10:28 pm:

Hmm, how about a 7th Heaven Angel Crossover.
