Season Fourteen

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Mystery Science Theater 3000: Season Fourteen

By Callie Sullivan (Csullivan) on Thursday, November 09, 2023 - 10:04 am:

The first two movies in Season 14 have been announced.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, November 10, 2023 - 5:33 am:

Familiar with both the movies listed so far.

Third one has been announced, and it's The Legend Itself. That's right, they intend to riff Plan 9 from Outer Space. It's true that both RiffTrax and The Mads Are Back have already done it, but it'll be neat for it to be featured as an MST3K episode.

Plan 9 From Outer Space!?

Talk about shooting fish in a barrel!

This year's Turkey Day Marathon is going to be a massive extravaganza starting at 0900 EST this Thursday and will continue for forty-eight hours. Should you choose to watch the entire thing, you'll probably feel like Pheidippides at the end of the original marathon by the time Saturday morning rolls around.

Joel has emailed to admit that they're struggling to raise the funding this time, having only funded half of the total so far. They've made some changes to their plans but have only wiped $800,000 off the total they need.

He also announced three more films they're planning to riff:

Ballistica
Abraxas
BattleTruck

(I can't add anything to the Index at the moment because I can't get into Admin.)

The campaign page still reads "All or nothing." I'm wondering whether they'll make the total this time.

That's odd. I just tried myself and was able to get in without any problems.

If you like, Callie, I could add those three movies for you.

Alas, they came up short. That doesn't mean they can't give it a another try. After the first crowdfunding effort for the Demon Squad sequel failed, they gave it a second go with a more modest budget and met their goals. Part of the failure I believe was the lack of publicity thanks to the Tinseltown strikes preventing potential talent from promoting it, combined with the commitment to have the crowdfunding end on Thanksgiving weekend. With the strikes over, the talent can fully participate without fear of a lead pipe to the kneecaps. Going back to Kickstarter might also be a good idea, as their publicity arm would help spread the word with greater effectiveness.

Good point, with the strikes done, it might be easier.

Tim: That's odd. I just tried myself and was able to get in without any problems.

I've lost the main page again - it just comes up blank, with the divider line the only thing visible. I can only get into NitC via Google and using a link that gives me the index but not the side panel.

Thanks for the offer, Tim, but sadly it's not necessary any more, unlike Joel comes up with a way to raise the rest of the money.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 - 5:22 am:

What browser are you using, Callie?

Just wondering if that's the problem. I use Firefox, and have not had the issues you're having.

By Gordon Lawyer (Glawyer) on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 - 5:50 am:

Another possible contributing factor to the Season 14 crowdfunding failure is that, for some reason, Ivan Askwith wasn't running it as he had in the previous instances.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 - 5:56 am:

Because of the strikes?

By Callie Sullivan (Csullivan) on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 - 6:03 am:

I've tried on Chrome and on Firefox but was getting the same problem. However, my computer did an update yesterday and now NitC is back properly - at least for a while, then it'll probably drop out again.

I won't bother putting the new episodes into the index until/unless they find a new way to raise the remaining funds. I saw a suggestion somewhere that they could consider setting up a GoFundMe for the rest, especially now the strikes are over and they can publicise better.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, November 30, 2023 - 5:13 am:

I wish them luck.
